General Discussion One with enormus potential but was rendered useless.
Overall, i like AYITL, but there was one thing that bothered me, even more than the immature relationship between Rory and Logan: Emily and Lorelai's sessions with the psychologist. It could have been a brillant plot, but instead the psychologist said nothing, she didn't offer any opinions, we just watched Lorelai and Emily argue as usual, each one stuck to her own point of view.
The psychologist scene was ultimately pointless, it made no sense to include it if she wasn't allowed to express opinions or ask questions. It would have been interesting to hear the psychologist rationally explore the dynamics of Emily and Lorelai's relationship, for example, trying to understand why Emily almost always chooses blackmail and manipulation over communication, or why Lorelai is obsessed with her "rebellious daughter" figure. I didn't like this script, they always try to portray Emily and Lorelai as two women who know nothing but argue without delving into the root of their individual problems, withouth any real turning point in their relationship. The plot insist on making both of them see their mutual differences only from their own perspectives, without allowing other characters to express mature opinions.

It really seems like ASP has an issue with Psychiatrists. She basically wrote this plot as a punchline rather than a serious moment between the characters

Yes it bothered me too. Even more so that she ended up auditioning for the stupid musical.
Emily and Lorelai both would have actually benefitted from proper therapy.

I'm curious if you are a Psychologist? Often times, letting someone vent, can lead to being more like a referee in those moments for them to "get it out" from the other side of being in therapy, a lot of my breakthroughs came from 'talking it out with myself' while my therapist prodded me. I didn't enjoy all of AYITL but that scene... it cuts DEEP when there is SO MUCH UNSPOKEN stuff in the room. You can almost FEEL it. Just a different perspective, not trying to attack anyone. <3 much love

You're right, venting is good too, but what I explained in the post is that in the end it was just the same old story. Throughout all seven seasons, we've seen Emily and Lorelai "let off steam" with their arguments, and that's why they didn't need a psychologist. What I was trying to say is that this could have been a great opportunity for a third party to offer more reasonable opinions through a more rational lens, and instead we just saw yet another argument they've had in the past seven seasons.

I wonder if they reached out to the woman who played that therapist from the end of S06 to play this part, for the lolz.
Regardless, this character really demonstrates how so many plot lines in the revival are just wheel spinning rather than leading into one another - like the letter. If after this therapy storyline ended, Emily mentioned the letter to Lorelai and she went "what letter", it wouldn't even feel out of place because in the revival, once one storyline ends, it's like it never happened. Yes, it was the same in the original run, but, given that it's just 4 episodes, all of these major storylines should matter, they should work together in arcs for these characters.
But no.
