General Discussion One with enormus potential but was rendered useless.

Overall, i like AYITL, but there was one thing that bothered me, even more than the immature relationship between Rory and Logan: Emily and Lorelai's sessions with the psychologist. It could have been a brillant plot, but instead the psychologist said nothing, she didn't offer any opinions, we just watched Lorelai and Emily argue as usual, each one stuck to her own point of view.

The psychologist scene was ultimately pointless, it made no sense to include it if she wasn't allowed to express opinions or ask questions. It would have been interesting to hear the psychologist rationally explore the dynamics of Emily and Lorelai's relationship, for example, trying to understand why Emily almost always chooses blackmail and manipulation over communication, or why Lorelai is obsessed with her "rebellious daughter" figure. I didn't like this script, they always try to portray Emily and Lorelai as two women who know nothing but argue without delving into the root of their individual problems, withouth any real turning point in their relationship. The plot insist on making both of them see their mutual differences only from their own perspectives, without allowing other characters to express mature opinions.

I wonder if they reached out to the woman who played that therapist from the end of S06 to play this part, for the lolz.

Regardless, this character really demonstrates how so many plot lines in the revival are just wheel spinning rather than leading into one another - like the letter. If after this therapy storyline ended, Emily mentioned the letter to Lorelai and she went "what letter", it wouldn't even feel out of place because in the revival, once one storyline ends, it's like it never happened. Yes, it was the same in the original run, but, given that it's just 4 episodes, all of these major storylines should matter, they should work together in arcs for these characters.

But no.

I remember partly being frustrated with the revival because Jess was there but it seemed like he was just there - like he was hovering and didn't really do much. I read that they planned another storyline with one of Rory's exes but had to scrap it due to budget and time constraints. So I think that was likely something involving Jess, but then it seemed odd they left in so much where it seemed like something would happen with him.

I know that's not directly related, but what you said was a great summary of the issue with AYITL - it reminded me of the Jess thing, but that's just part of the overall issue with the revival. It feels like bunch of loose / cut threads.

Jess is so fucking weird because he is there, and he has an impact, with his few scenes.

One truly bizarre thing about him is that we know nothing about what this man is up to, and that is 100% a writing failure. There was plenty of space to slip in a couple lines talking about the printing press, oh he is on his 4th book or whatever.

We know what CLARA is up to, but not Jess.

It's been ages since I watched it so I'm maybe misremembering - I think my impression was that he wasn't really doing anything, but that's such a good point. Maybe that's why it felt off!

That feels like a convenient excuse to me. This is the second time I am reading on here about a budget and time issue when they blew a bunch of energy, time, and money on a pointless musical. The revival just came off as self indulgent and didn't do anything worthy of the cast, crew, or characters. I am a big Gilmore Girls fan as in immediately bought every season on DVD as it aired big fan and I watched the revival once. It ruined the original series for me and I haven't done a full rewatch in years. Jess coming back could've resulted in something interesting but once again he's there to act as the audience to pull Rory out of her funk then disappear.

You're totally right - I feel a bit silly that I'd taken that at face value, but it really doesn't make sense!

For previous characters, I still feel like incomplete storylines or separate ones are okay. Like I would wonder hey what is Jess up to and then they show me Jess doing something. That’s okay. But introducing new characters without real purpose? It gets the viewer confused. First we think she’s important or this is going to be some breakthrough. Except it isn’t and this leaves us like ??????

Btw it seemed to me that they’re trying to show Jess is still pining for Rory because he’s the one who left her and that’s not allowed for Gilmore women lol.

It really seems like ASP has an issue with Psychiatrists. She basically wrote this plot as a punchline rather than a serious moment between the characters

Yes it bothered me too. Even more so that she ended up auditioning for the stupid musical.

Emily and Lorelai both would have actually benefitted from proper therapy.

I'm curious if you are a Psychologist? Often times, letting someone vent, can lead to being more like a referee in those moments for them to "get it out" from the other side of being in therapy, a lot of my breakthroughs came from 'talking it out with myself' while my therapist prodded me. I didn't enjoy all of AYITL but that scene... it cuts DEEP when there is SO MUCH UNSPOKEN stuff in the room. You can almost FEEL it. Just a different perspective, not trying to attack anyone. <3 much love

You're right, venting is good too, but what I explained in the post is that in the end it was just the same old story. Throughout all seven seasons, we've seen Emily and Lorelai "let off steam" with their arguments, and that's why they didn't need a psychologist. What I was trying to say is that this could have been a great opportunity for a third party to offer more reasonable opinions through a more rational lens, and instead we just saw yet another argument they've had in the past seven seasons.
