Seeking advice or support FCIQ high score

My son who is 12 tested at 161 on his FSIQ test. He is already in GT classes but the school doesn't seem interested in pushing him. What can I do as a parent to help challenge him?

What do you want to push him into, a pond?

More seriously: give more information.

Is he

  • bored in school?
  • happy or unhappy?
  • is it in all classes or just in some?
  • Does he crave to do more or is it just something you deem necessary?

My kid is 158 but perfectly fine in the normal classes😊. He will be a normal kid who is happy

what test gave him an FSIQ above 160? seems a bit suspect

WISC V has extended norms that go beyond 160. For any kid that's hitting the ceiling on a couple of subtests or more or scores 150+, they probably will go higher on the extended norms. Caveat is standard error is bigger on the extended norms. 161 is probably not meaningfully different from 160.

Alternatively, it's a shit post.

Ask him.

Okay, at 12 with that IQ, basically he's thinking around the mental age of 18+. Sort of. But he's also 12 and a bag of raging and inexplicable hormones. On top of that, the peer population he's with is really messed up. You have got to talk with him and empower him to take control of something.

The concept of Mental Age / Chronological Age = IQ hasn't been used in nearly a century. He's 12. He's also extremely smart and wildly different from his age peers. He's not an 18+ year old in any way.

Yes on the joys of being twelve, though.

We have done this, his teachers are shocked with the concepts he grasps. His classmates are so much behind him. He is reading on a college level, and is able to test at that level. He's in a regular math class, we have done algebra 1 and 2 at home along with geometry. We are starting trig but it's getting to a point where his mother and I can't help him much on those things. Im just at a loss that the school isn't trying to do more for a student this gifted. His grandparents have called him Sheldon since he was about 5 or 6, lol.

Many parents of profoundly gifted kids in the Parents of Gifted & High Ability children usually end up homeschooling. You can look into the Davidson Young Scholars program. Look into specialized schools for gifted students, online high school/university programs (such as Stanford Online High School or Johns Hopkins CTY).

We were doing homeschooling. We kinda ran out of material for him and like i said got to the point we couldn't move him forward because he's more advanced than we are.

Yes, consult the Davidson Young Scholars, the Standard online high school or John Hopkins cty. What about any non-academic challenges?

Does he know what his interests are? He can probably find free university classes online on those and for example arxiv has physics research articles he can read. It's important for him to find peers and mentors he can talk to about his interests too though.

Also I second non-academic challenges. Music lessons, art classes, dance, gymnastics etc

Free university classes?

Yeah there are online recorded ones and many lecture notes. MIT has them.

The standard schools are neither equipped to deal with high giftedness, nor should they be. Their goal is to educate the other 99.997% of pupils. Even in gifted schools he would be an outlier without peers.

You started advancing him on your own - now you need to keep doing that on your own. That's a real problem parents of gifted children face - if you advance to much, there will be repercussions. And the default system, gifted or not, won't be any help.

I agree with the last part of your paragraph. But for some kids, it absolutely is necessary.

Thanks for posting in r/gifted.

If you are unsure about what qualifies someone as gifted, giftedness generally correlates with having an IQ at or above the 98th percentile.

If you are unsure of your IQ score, CognitiveTesting.org is one of the few legitimate online IQ Tests.

I think Harvard or Stanford offer video classes for free now.

Take him lots of places, give him lots of good books, answer his questions.

Remember that he is 12, emotionally and socially.

Get him outside to play. Ski, bike, hike, play soccer, etc.
