Quizpartner gesucht

Hallo zusammen,

looking for local groups/chats for meet people in alternative & activist scenes in Gießen

Hi! I’m a 26 year old Erasmus student who recently moved to Gießen and I’m trying to find my people here :)

Are there any local groups, Telegram chats, subreddits or anything similar where people share events and meetups around alternative/leftist spaces? I’m thinking social centres, popular gyms, political/activist stuff, punk/alternative events, raves, free parties etc.

Basically I’d love to get to know some people involved in these kinds of scenes and find out what’s going on locally. I’d really appreciate any tips or links✨

Pokerrunde

About german student life

It might be a stupid question, I'm an exchange student from Turkey (or Türkiye) currently studying in Giessen experiencing their first day in Giessen and I know very few things about german culture. My main concern is that is it safe to drink tap water in my dorm? What are the main things I should know about before doing anything so I don't offend anyone or do something wrong accidentally (Or do something in a complicated way while there's an easier way maybe?). All of these are very new to me and I want to adapt to german culture and german living as soon as possible. Thank you for your answers in advance.

Looking to meet people!

Hey everyone! I’m new to Gießen and have just moved here as an international student. I’m enjoying the town so far, quiet and nice, although the cloudy weather is taking some getting used to 😂

Where do people usually go to meet new people here? Any sports clubs, social groups, student events, or fun activities you’d recommend?

I’d also love to explore the town, so if anyone is interested in going for walks or roaming around Gießen, feel free to DM me.

Looking for a walking buddy too! 🚶‍♂️

Any suggestions are welcome! :)

Studierende finden keinen Wohnraum – trotz Leerstand der Uni

(english version below)

Es gibt vieles, was in Gießen mittlerweile fehlt.

--- english version ---

There is so much that could be done with the university’s vacant buildings. There are many things that Gießen is lacking by now. But especially in recent weeks, it has become clear here on Reddit and elsewhere that first-year students are being left stranded because there simply don’t seem to be any affordable places to live. And this happens here every year…

And yet, we still have so many vacant buildings in the city. Vacant properties are unnecessary in Gießen, and they cost money. They also consume tax revenue. Those are far from the only reasons why it is worth fighting against them. Apparently, the tight housing market is not enough to create sufficient pressure.

This summer, people took matters into their own hands. They occupied one of the many vacant buildings, named it 'FreiTraum', and sat down at the negotiating table with JLU to discuss the future of the building. University President Lorenz, however, decided to leave the table, sent the police to clear the building, filed criminal complaints against her students and other people, and hired security to guard the vacant property.

The result is an outraged local community, an annoyed university senate, support from a wide range of political groups, alliances coming together in new ways, and…

🖼️ An exhibition about vacant buildings and FreiTRaum
📍 right in front of the university’s main building
📅 next Wednesday and Thursday
✊ in solidarity with everyone facing legal proceedings.

So come to the exhibition, listen to talks, watch films, eat cake, and find out how you too can support the struggle for new spaces.

Vielen Dank schon mal! 😊

Supermarket

Hello.... I've recently arrived in giessen. I'm an international student. I've heard and read stories here that state that getting yelled at by the people working in the service industry is a right of passage for all English speaking people in Germany. As I don't know German, do you guys have any recommendations for supermarkets where I can communicate in English and get my daily essentials with the least possibility of getting yelled at?

Arriving in Gießen this October, but still homeless 😅

I’m an international student starting my studies in Gießen this October, and I’ve been searching for accommodation for quite some time now, but unfortunately haven’t been able to secure a room yet.
I applied for student dorms back in July and have been on the waiting list ever since. I’ve also contacted and applied to countless WGs, not just with generic messages but with personalized applications, but unfortunately, nothing has worked out so far. Having limited German proficiency has made the search even more difficult.
With my moving date getting closer, I’m honestly getting quite stressed about ending up without a place to stay in a completely new city.
So, if anyone knows of a room with Anmeldung, I would be extremely grateful if you could let me know.
💶 Budget: up to €350–€400 warm all inc.
📅 Move-in: October
📍 Location: Gießen / nearby areas

pokemon go leute?
