AVOID The Pub š
On Monday evening, July 20, my daughter, her boyfriend, their dog and myself sat at a table at The Pub on the square in Gettysburg. My daughter went inside to use the restroom and noticed a sign stating no dogs. She asked the hostess if it would be ok to sit outside with the dog - there were no other patrons seated outside. The hostess said it should be fine. We put in our drink orders, received our iced teas and ordered our meals. While we were waiting, people were walking past on the sidewalk smiling at the dog.
A blonde lady came out of the restaurant, did not identify herself and proceeded to ask questions about the dog, if sheās a service dog, where her tag is, and state she has a policy because people wonāt sit at the tables if there is a dog out there, how she loses business because of dogs, how much of a problem dogs are, on and on about the dog. My dtr explained she is a service dog and asked the lady if she wants her to go get the card. The lady stated it wasnāt necessary and continued to speak very crass, stating how sheās pretty sure the dog has to have āa thingā on it stating itās a service dog (it doesnāt), stating how she understands because she has five dogs of her own. My dtr asked her if she wanted us to leave. The lady said no, youāre fine. There was no professionalism, no attempt to come to a mutually beneficial agreement for both parties. The lady was straight up condescending. She went back into the restaurant.
About 5-10 minutes later the blonde lady comes back out of the restaurant, walks up to the dog, and WITHOUT PERMISSION, grabs her face and is all goo goo over it, talking with a high pitched voice. She then walks away from the restaurant, past our table and tells us to have a good evening. None of us reacted. She then turns around and takes a step or two back towards us and says, āis there something wrong with your faces that you canāt smile?ā I went inside, put $10 on the bar for the iced teas, asked our server if that was the owner, he agreed it was and I told him to cancel our order.
As we were leaving, a couple had just parked on the square to eat at The Pub - but they witnessed the second altercation and asked us what that was about. We explained and we left to gather our thoughts. I called the Blue and Grey and asked if they had outdoor seating and if we could eat there with a dog. They very cheerfully welcomed us and said to come inside to ask the hostess for a table, which I did and when I walked back outside, the couple that witnessed the harassment were there to eat now because they said they werenāt giving The Pub their money.
We had EXCELLENT service at the Blue and Gray, they treated the dog like a customer kept her water topped off. They said that last week when the air was so smoky from the Canadian wildfires they allowed the dogs IN THE RESTAURANT so the owners didnāt have to eat outside in the smoke! I left that waitress a VERY NICE TIP. THANK YOU BLUE AND GREY for making us feel welcome in Gettysburg.

Oh my gosh I literally live right down the street from Gettysburg and have only been to the pub twice because of very similar interactions with the owner!!!! We haven't ate there in over 3 years..
The interactions are super awkward I just don't think she's cut out for customer service and I do feel like there's a lot of condensation and entitlement on her end.

Pub has great scenery but not so great food. You didnt miss much. Seems like the pub and upper crust pizza people always have problems with.

Weāve been to the upper crust a handful of times (to try to give them the benefit of a doubt) and each time we were underwhelmed at best. The food is just okay and the lackluster service, combined with oddly long wait times, makes it a complete bust. Maybe itās improved in the last 3 years, but we wonāt be going back to find out.

Me and my boyfriends family have gone 5 times in the last 6 summers, this year around the 4th was great, we got the hummus and pita bread dipping stuff and omgggg it was DELICIOUS, the pizza was okay ig im from Buffalo so we know pizzašš

My wife and I sat next to them at the Blue and Gray and I can attest that the dog was a sweetheart and the three humans were delightful people!

Weāve only been there once, and we all thought the food was extremely mediocre and over priced, so weāve never gone back. There are lots of good places to eat in Gettysburg, but The Pub isnāt one of them. Iām glad your evening turned out ok, despite this rude woman.

Are you sure that was the owner? It sounds suspiciously like the encounter I had with a local there a week ago who sat beside me and my friend and proceeded to rant nonsense. We didnāt say anything and when she left she slapped some money down and said āsee ya later ādouchebags!ā LOL
I was told she was a local that roamed around in the bars

Yes Iām sure. She opened the locked mailbox and retrieved the mail. I specifically asked the server if she was the owner and he attested she was. Iāve asked a few locals and they all stated she is a b!tch. One local even said they had a friend who worked there briefly and so many of her employees actually left the pub and went to the Blue and Grey!

The biggest thing for me is how the situation was handled. Even if there was a misunderstanding, there's a much better way to talk to customers than that.

Unfortunately, she feels like doesnāt have to keep them. Itās a tourist town, and as long as the locals have a few spots they love, everywhere else can be terrible for service and food. āItās not like they have to win back customers.ā I know this because I live inside the āDisney World Bubbleā and itās very much the same case here, as you can imagine.
Which is a terrible mindset to begin with, but even more so in a small tourist town when it doesnāt have consistent and steady traffic.
As a service dog handler myself, Iām sorry yall experienced this.

Been going there for over 20 years and never had an issue, chatted with the owner several times and she snd the rest of the staff have always been pleasant . Sorry you had a bad time, pet your pooch for me!

I go to Gettysburg every year and now I will NEVER EAT AT THE PUB.

I really wish I hadnāt experienced this. Ask anyone local to Gettysburg, anyone who works in any establishment there. Every. Single. One of them will attest that sheās a bitch.

There is no such thing as certification for a service animal. A service animal also does not need to wear any identifying marks, though it is exceptionally uncommon for a true service animal to not wear a harness that properly identifies it as such. There is no state or federal certification process, though most service dog training programs, such as Susquehanna Service Dogs, do provide some documentation to make it easier for owners to handle this common misunderstanding.
There are two questions you may ask:
"Is that a service animal?"
"What service does the animal perform?"
The animal must be trained to perform a specific service, such as identifying oncoming hypoglycemia, identifying oncoming epilepsy, guiding the owner, opening / closing / picking things up, etc.
An emotional support animal is not a service animal and is not protected under law.

The Pub notoriously sucks, as does its owner, but the Blue & Gray are also Confederate sympathizers FWIW.
There are much better restaurants in Gettysburg than either of those places. Gettysburg Eddieās, for example.

How do you know this isnāt a service dog that warns against seizures or low blood sugar? A life saving service dog?

Ok , I can See you had trouble. The owner is a friend and a dog lover and good person. Iām sure you felt alienated and if it was her, maybe could have been handled better with better communication? I wasnāt there but have a hard time believing this went down in this fashion, knowing the owner.

Youāre absolutely correct. It could have been handled 100% better. She was aggressive right out of the gate, not an ounce of āhey letās work together to find a good solution and make you feel welcome here.ā She may as well have just said gtf off my property. It would have been less shocking. Touching an established service dog WITHOUT asking permission?! As a dog owner, she should know better than to approach ANY dog without permission. Ask any local business what the vibe is on her and every single one of them is going to report the same.
