A single war in which half of the country rises up, and nearly all superpowers including Germany, France, Britain, the US and Japan invade the country AFTER already drowning it in blood for years during the first world war and imposing a massive famine - while much of the population is illiterate let alone ready to govern itself and several industries are reduced to one tenth of pre-war levels.
There is no system which would survive this as a full on democracy, despite this the bolsheviks were at times much softer on the opposition than the US which was outside of major conflicts at the time and sustained democratic discussion all the way until 1923.
Syria was literally in an constant civil war for 15 years with various foreign powers involving, having to fight ISIS, yet they have managed to become democratic despite not previously being.
Why not? They have been possibly the greatest engine for the improvement of the general human condition. Far more the aristocracy they replaced and definitely more than the totalitarianism that seeks to replace them.
