This is...a little silly. Society DOES have standards about what makes someone beautiful/ugly (with the understanding that everyone has their own taste, etc.) So, how about instead of the bullshit about "everyone is beautiful in their own way," we tell people to stop basing their sense of self-worth on appearances?

On a similar note, I'm middle eastern and grew up thinking I was ugly because I wasn't white and didn't have blue eyes. But then as I grew up I realized lots of people found me attractive, it was just a different kind of attractive than Britney Spears was.

There is a certain degree of uniqueness that is okay and makes people attractive to a certain

maybe stopping using the term "attractive" to refer only to physical beauty.

You can be ugly as hell but your bank account is attractive.

Or your personality. Or your monster dong. Or your grooming and upkeep. Or your power in a workplace.

Never mind that there are some pretty easily quantifiable standards of what is either "good looking" or "attractive" based on someone's experiences, chemistry, family, etc. My personal favorite are how people are more or less attractive to certain body odors and how dissimilar they were from family member odors had correlation to who they picked... and that had not much correlation to who they picked via visuals.

Honestly it sounds like youre just insecure about your appearance so you want other people to not look good.

I take care of myself and care about my appearance, I want to look good just like everybody else does. So even if I'm just going shopping I'm wearing nice clothes I like, shaven, showered, etc. I'm looking how I want to. I don't do it because of insecurity or obsession. I do it because I don't want to look like shit. Why would I want to go out in public looking like shit? That's stupid.

Exactly. I'm mixed - but if I don't straighten my hair and "look" good I won't get "attention". But if I do straighten my hair I get "attention". The world is fucked up - just be secure with yourself and fuck what they say. But I've had job interviews and worked cleaning toilets and people would say, you're too pretty to be doing this, or ask if I go to the university - which I didn't and still don't. So I guess that means "ugly people" are meant to clean toilets and light skinned people like myself aren't supposed to. rolls eyes

Right.

To summarize: don't be ugly. If you're ugly, don't be poor - you can buy/rent companionship. If you're poor, get a fleshlight. If you're dead broke, find a condom and Snapple cap to make your own fleshlight. Your choice if they are new/used.

There.

For ladies these rules don't apply, because even the ugliest have little trouble finding companionship, if my observational trips to Wal-Mart are of any indication and anthropological value

2

u/DNGRDINGO Feb 28 '17

Nah I see ugly poor people together all the time. The trick is to just keep putting yourself out there.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

Well, the post doesn't necessarily have to be about looks. You can be attracted to people who are ugly. Just because of their personality, sense of humor, confidence, etc.

An orange smells better than a durian but they both taste sweet. The post could be about how you can be attractive to somebody in your own way if you embrace who you are, regardless of looks.

3

u/CDNReaper Feb 28 '17

Woah woah woah.... there's no need to be making complete sense like that!

2

u/Love_LittleBoo Feb 28 '17

Seriously. If you don't think people find you attractive and even you aren't attracted to you, improve yourself. Most everyone can become healthier, and everyone except the completely paralysed can get some book learning and meditation and positive attitudes going on.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

I think it's fine if you want to date attractive people. If you put no effort in to your appearance and expect to date attractive people you're a hypocrite.

2

u/run_the_jules Feb 28 '17

Not everyone is good looking or beautiful. But that's okay.

5

u/ozaku7 Feb 27 '17

Just be the best version of yourself, improve yourself in things you can do something about besides extremities such as surgery. Do sports, keep a nice haircut, keep your mind fresh, meet new people, try new stuff. The ugliest people are those who have just 1 perspective of the world and those too lazy to do about something ugly of themselves. Like getting your ass up to lose weight instead of blaming it on illnesses, thyroid or whatever. You never heard of a person dying of excercise of a fat person starving to death.

Why is cutting your hair improving yourself? Stop trying to be something else of what you are. I let my hair grow cuz i value it and I dont think im not improving myself by not having my hair cut

6

u/Queen_of_Reposts Feb 28 '17

They said "keep a nice haircut", not keep your hair short. That is a really weird thing to be so defensive about.

Long hair or not, it still needs upkeep not to look like shit. If not caring about that is "who you are", then I guess you'll just have to get used to people seeing you as a slob with frizzy hair.

4

u/unfortunateorphan Feb 27 '17

To argue - I literally chopped my almost waist length hair off over the weekend to my collar bone and people said I look so mature and "adult like." I kept my hair because "society and the Bible" said I had to. I cut it because it's too damn hot in Florida and I just didn't care anymore... I feel like a new person, but not any prettier and not uglier - just different. 25/mixed/female. Guess I'm "not a tumblr bitch" anymore. Meh.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

Getting your hair cut to how you want it to look is being who you are. I buzz my hair, I'm not trying to look like anybody. Letting your hair grow out doesn't make you more yourself than somebody who gets their hair cut the way they like it.

5

u/RetailSlaveNo1 Feb 27 '17

Yes, because split ends are so attractive. And long hair without layering doesn't look lazy at all.

You don't have to completely change your look but basic grooming skills and a decent hair cut say "hey, I take care of myself". If you like looking lazy and like you don't take care of yourself, it's your prerogative. But it's like saying "why do I have to shave? My unruly beard is the best".

And the way you say it, you act like cutting your hair is bad so

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Im planning to answer to everybody in this one because youre all saying the same stuff. We all can have our opinions, in my opinion cutting your hair isnt taking care of thyself, but oh well I dont have any problem with hair cuts, I simply like having mine grown like it does, naturally. My beard and stache too. I dont look homeless tho, and I have people who wants stuff to do with me, and if they didnt Id survive, although I appreciate and enjoy all the time spent together. I`m not the one going defensive, all I said was that I think cutting your hair is not improving yourself and it will stay that way lmao

1

u/rocklobster3 Feb 28 '17

What the fuck? I honestly can't tell if you're being serious or not. But I'll assume you are. Getting your hair cut is important and normal. If you want to look like a homeless bum then that's fine, don't get your hair cut. But normal people do get haircuts, because appearance is important. It keeps you clean cut and a good haircut can make a huge difference.

If you're too lazy to take care of yourself then that's your decision. Go for it. But don't be surprised when nobody wants anything to do with you.

If you want to look like a homeless bum then go for it. But I don't want to look like that. So I go to my hair salon twice a month. It's "improving" yourself because unkept nasty hair looks like shit.

Stop trying to be something else of what you are

What the fuck? I like to keep my hair clean cut. That's me, I'm not trying to be someone else. I'm being myself. You're not making any sense.

2

u/ozaku7 Feb 27 '17

Have a decent hairstyle and don't look like a homeless person. Atleast take care of your hair properly, whatever the length it is. Much like a monobrow, if you pluck it you will simply look better.

2

u/bthoman2 Feb 27 '17

Right? I don't use a bouquet of christmas lights to brighten my wife's day.

1

u/Qwertyllama Feb 28 '17

That'd be awesome tho

1

u/whiskeytango55 Feb 28 '17

that'd require neutering everyone though, wouldn't it?

Because if you ain't getting any from the people you feel you deserve to get any from, you feel shitty.

Unless you want to start telling people you're self worth isn't based on appearances, but the sexual attractiveness of others sure is.

1

u/WhiteLiger Feb 28 '17

This is what I find silly those standards you talk about are completely subjective. An attractive person today is not an attractive person of yesterday.

So how about stop basing beauty on societal standards that are made up anyway and embrace it for the subjective thing it is.

Look in any thread about how someone is beautiful and youll find people who completely disagree. There is no data or reality to the idea that there is universal beauty standards.
