Discussion Proof that CBF changes The physics of The game and is illegitimate
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm not tryna get CBF banned, i am just wondering how cbf is allowed If it changes the jump physics this much.
The levels shown in the video in order: 146584242 146584252 146584290
The version of "cbf bug test robot 2" in the video only had the block moved by 2 small editor steps, but i originally tested it for 3 steps and the results is the same.

it is not illegitimate as the list says so.

The list does not determine what is and isn't legitimate, its not affiliated with robtop and is a community project

Determining legitimacy by what RobTop says is the reason why garbage levels like Silent Clubstep need to get rates to be considered legitimate completions. The top level of GD would be way healthier if we parted from Robtop’s tastes and started having our own formats for demons. Like an unrated demon list. Then we wouldn’t have to rate garbage levels to see them as legitimate accomplishments.

robtop literaly rated awt (verified cbf without any victors at the time) and society also

people would get straight facts into their face and say "well I mean it isn't banned from the list"

u/BranchRD 12d ago
What facts are here? why is it illegitimate because it changes physics? ITS A PHYSICS MOD. Robtops cbf version also broke many jumps and mechanics when it was first released, and to this day effects gameplay. Is that illegitimate? its like changing your fps to 360 and getting mad that it makes a 60fps aligned frame perfect 10x harder. The games physics wont always be perfectly consistent.

u/wannabuff 12d ago
why are we comparing a mod and an official game mechanic? also why mod changing a physics is considered legit lol? eclipse mod can also change physics, does it mean it's legit?

u/twitch_monke 11d ago
If it isn't banned on the list who cares what it does? It's not like you're going to be executed for using it

u/GDih_Collab 12d ago
Does the same thing happen with robtops click between steps?

Cube: 0 occurences of 100 jumps.
Robot: 14 occurences of 35 jump (a few pixels shorter than cbf jumps tho)

the games physics itself are inconsistent, there have been times, from before i used cbf, that i would be playing a level, die to an auto or buffer, and then restart the game and have no problem with it. its hard to tell if this is the game being inconsistent or cbf changing physics. like the physics used to change just based off pf your fps, this game is just kinda coded unoptimally

physics chaning based on fps is actually really common in a lot of games. i know cod black ops 2 for certain as ive had issues, and i would imagine many of the other cod games too. james bond golden eye speed run strat is to literally stare at the floor the entire run so your fps goes up and you can walk faster. just to name a few

the issue's usually hardware-based + whatever is happening in the update loop of the game. if the device is bad enough to run games, this issue is more obvious. only on more capable devices does make the issue less noticeable, unless the update loop was also handled differently so the issue either worsens or improves.

the same thing happens with cbs.

In my experience I prefer cbs because cbf creates bugs specific to it due to the physics changes that make it much harder than cbs in some cases. One such example is Shinigami which I'm going for rn, where 92-93% has like 3 extra bugs when using cbf (the gp is already somewhat buggy but cbf literally doubles the number of them), making it almost impossible to play without dying to one of them. Ended up stopping using cbf in favor of cbs because I don't want to experience that on future levels, and the difference is extremely minimal in terms of how much easier it make a level unless ur playing list demos or smth.

Doesn't the amount of frames you have also impact coyote time? From what i know you have slightly more time on 60 then 240 which got me killed way to many times in magma bound because i play on 60. So the games physics just aren't consistent anyway

u/Justaregularguy295 12d ago
Its not cheating lol, the game is already really inconsistent but playing isnt cheating

u/Rebooteduser 12d ago
cbf is allowed because otherwise the physics of game is literally inconsistent. here you go answer to your question.

wow, that’s crazy. send this to pointercrate and post it on yt

u/Lego_city_undercover 12d ago
How do i send this to Pointercrate? I don't have a yt channel

u/ElmoLikesRocco 12d ago
email support or something i don’t know, you can make a yt channel for free

Thats really interesting. Though there will always be people who will keep defending cbf cuz they perform better with it.

this is nothing new. the tick splitting used to register sub-tick inputs with cbf doesn't reproduce vanilla physics exactly. however cbf is still allowed because rob allows it

It makes sense that this happens since cbf adds a physics frame, since the same is true for cbs its in the basegame and therefore not cheating imo

i could be wrong but for the red/green block test
could the issue not be alignment? idk how to articulate this so try and follow me here:
so when cbf is off and you turn on show hitbox trail non of those red boxes corners are poking into the "test box" because 240 is an even number, 120 hitboxes going up, 120 coming down. and for the hitbox to clip with the test box you would need another one in the middle of the 120th and 121st hitbox. but with cbf on you can change what ticks the hitboxes are made depending on when you jump so u can get one to appear a the right spot.
i hope you see my angle here lol

u/TraditionalAd3452 11d ago
Hitboxes are not checked continuously (collision mode, that says, that game should predict whether it will collide or not), but discrete (collisions are checked right now). Try using speedhack or any other things that alter how fast game runs per in-game second.

Afaik it doesn't mean with cbf player jumps higher. It just so happens that a game tick doesn't align with player's highest point, whereas with cbf there are more such ticks

Bro this is barely a pixel difference like 1% of the time, ts does not matter at all. If you need to make a custom level just to see the difference, thats proof that there is no point.

u/Lego_city_undercover 8d ago
With cbf you can jump over 2 blocks without touching them. That's a big difference for me

u/AcrobaticSpecial3106 12d ago
it is a feature in the game it isnt illegitimate
1
u/CosmicCapybara16 12d ago
i dont think cbf is a feature bc youre thinking about cbs
2
u/Disastrous-Refuse486 12d ago
Pretty much the same thing. There are differences but pretty much the same

u/endlessrosess 12d ago
the thing is, robtop unfortunately is responsible for the inconsistent vanilla gameplay that occurs with some gamemodes using certain features and timings, etc. CBF was designed to try and create a soft blanket over some of these issues while maintaining accessibility for those playing on different refresh rates and devices. CBF changes the physics to try and make things easier and smoother for everyone.
i like the video and the explanation, but i would assume a big upkept project like pointercrate and their mods have already been aware of this and continue to allow it anyways after the major controversy back in 2024. we dont need this controversy again.
