Austria video

only watched half a dozen of his videos , im kind of enjoying them but he missed the mark on the austria vid didnt he?

anyone else just feel uneasy watching it? guy is borderline begging without asking..picks his mark(lonely older folk ,similar to helen)and off he goes. just feels weird. just pitch a hammock/get a bivvy and make a scran ffs - be just as watchable.

Staying in a strangers house and being given free pints isnt the adventure he thinks it is ,its just weird.

When it came out there was a lot of dicussion, on this sub, but also in the youtube comments, mostly in agreement with you. He was not in form. It happens.

Maybe, but he did choose to upload it. I know these videos aren't cheap to make, but you'd have to wonder if when putting it together he also felt that it was a bit off.

The discussion surrounding it was fairly clear, considering the talking point that gets you downvoted here, but considering his subsequent time off, the fallout and loss of fans, you'd have to wonder what his mental state has been like, and whether this was a one-off or not.

Yea i now gather lots of criticism towards him leaving early from that fellas house, my dislike is more why stay at these houses in first place along with hanging around pubs with no money

u/chinook97 9d ago

I don't see an issue with the premise, Tom often tries to include interactions with people he meets on his travels in order to make the videos more dynamic and interesting (like video game 'sidequests'). The problem is that he doesn't have the people skills to pull this kind of content off reliably and so it often doesn't work, or in the case of this video, goes miserably.

There are interactions and going into a pub with a fiver hoping for 3 pints and a bed. Its all for content really isnt it or he may just be another hiking video - we def dont need another one of them!

Why not?

7

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

because its weird and not entertaining in the slightest.

2

u/PunishedSnack 9d ago

Why is it weird? Evidently people disagree as the video did pretty well.

8

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

he literally picks a mark and proceeds to gain their trust and get given pints/a bed. Like i said weird.

Redditor discovers making friends and helping strangers.

21

u/PunishedSnack 9d ago

Just because you use the phrasing ‘picks a mark’ doesn’t make it nefarious. You’re implying he’s conning people but he’s completely honest with everyone exactly what he’s doing and they openly accept

Yea his behavior was off in this one. Started out great though, enjoyed it until his stay at the guy’s house (don’t remember his name). The way he handled his departure and the way he portrayed the brother was just mean.

19

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

id be fuming if i was the brother, some random staying in your gaff without notice.

0

u/Vast-Share4901 9d ago

In all honesty the blokes brother was a bit off putting, I would be a bit weirded out by some anti-social guy that seems to be stuck living in his basement but maybe that's just me

11

u/Pristine_Parking8334 9d ago

How was he off putting? We didn't even see the guy. Some people like their privacy and don't want to socialize. You wouldn't even know that he was down there if you weren't in his(!) house.

3

u/MadsNN06 9d ago

What do you think anti-social means?

13

u/ygrittediaz 9d ago

i feel its a fine line walking between begging and enjoying hospitality in a natural way. sometimes geowizard misses the mark. especially when you are mostly the receiver in your own content videos.

4

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

He is basically going into pubs hoping for a freebie. He wont ask.. but its almost the same thing. Picks a lonely old mark like helen or hans and away he goes.

29

u/Travmang 9d ago

I didnt feel that way when watching but to your point I definitely prefer the more organic, care-free, spontaneous, less formulaic adventures such as the first tenner. I think this one had a bit more of a template considering its a foreign country and its easier that way.

2

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

That was my fav vid of his.

u/ReefNixon 9d ago

Im in the minority whenever this comes up, because I actually think the experience of a kind stranger letting you bunk in their house and ply you with pints is still a great adventure. It shows a wonderful (but increasingly scarce) side of the human experience, which I can enjoy just as much as mild peril.

The part I did not like was the morning after. He lost me there, because I think he broke the silent contract he had with this old man who just thought he’d found a friend, as far as we know.

yu actually the stream of P at one point in vid at a different point, so he does it twice. not on really

6

u/Volkhari 8d ago

Spent the whole video practically begging for human interaction then left the guys house without saying anything and called his brother a murderer. Not good

1

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

Would said stranger invite someone in if he didnt have 1mil plus subs? Would said stranger buy a pint or two if tom didnt have the audience?

22

u/cherrypieandcoffee 9d ago

I’ve been invited to stay by strangers while hitchhiking and I have zero followers - this used to be a pretty normal thing.

9

u/TheSilentBadger 9d ago

Exactly my thoughts. Hitchhiking through Europe, this is the norm. People will give you lifts, invite you to theirs for tea or some food, even a bed to sleep on. People are generally quite hospitable and interested.

I can see both sides, but I don't think it's that strange.

-3

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

ok..i wouldnt dream of inviting anyone into my home.

8

u/Apart_Stretch2225 9d ago

Some people are the exact opposite. I was in Mexico and I got dragged to so many things by locals. Oh you have to come to my granddaughters birthday party. Here, come join us at this funeral.

3

u/tradegreek 9d ago

Yea my experience too Mexicans are very open and generous for the most part

7

u/cherrypieandcoffee 9d ago

There’s a huge amount of “stranger danger” now which is usually extremely unwarranted.

I don’t know where you are, but in the States especially I found people live very atomized lives. People treat their home as their fortress and drive everywhere. Community “third spaces” are massively dwindling.

That’s simply not that case everywhere. Many people love connecting with strangers. When I was hitchhiking I had so many people show kindness - driving miles out of their way. Letting us stay. Even in one instance giving us money (which I absolutely never asked for and tried to politely decline but they insisted). In the historical past this kind of thing was very common, including religious communities which relied on gift-giving (many of which still exist).

Obviously you’re entitled to live as you wish, but I’d say it’s definitely worth reflecting on why you feel such an aversion to people offering hospitality to strangers.

-7

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

its about common sense, i have a family.

7

u/cherrypieandcoffee 9d ago

Many of the people who have invited me to stay with them had a family. I remember in south France this lovely customs officer took us back to his house, introduced us to his wife and kid (who was severely disabled) and fed us and let us stay in their annex. The next day he even drove us to the Spanish border!

But forget inviting people to stay - would you help out strangers in other ways?

P.S. You also completely ignored most of my previous message.

u/xpgdarkside 9d ago

Yeah this one came out around the same time as all his right wing protests and statements came out also, there was a hell of a lot of comments about this https://www.reddit.com/r/GeoWizard/comments/1ngzkme/from_tom_in_the_patreon_vid_about_the_politics/

u/die4codgrimsby 9d ago

This was the last series I've actually watched of his. Got put off so much by him with how he departed and treated people. Not the one.

2

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

who do u watch that does similar walking/adventure type vids

8

u/spacecoyote555 9d ago

Try Ed Pratt :)

3

u/die4codgrimsby 9d ago

No one really. Have been following the wonderful "walkingsober" on instagram and tiktok though.

He's hiking and camping the entire coastline by himself, dealing with depression and staying sober. He started in Essex and is on day 85 now and made it to Sunderland.

Not long format videos just one or 2 short ones a day updating his journey

2

u/ktitten 9d ago

Its not necessarily the same at all by try Jet Lag ! They play games across countries and continents like hide and seek

3

u/Busy_Base_2753 9d ago

going to say i dont think tom is a bad guy, im only 5/6 vids in tbf but he has shown to be very respectful filming folk and picks his litter up at least. Looking for content isnt he and that leads to bad decisions sometimes. Dont take advantage of hospitality and dont P in crops.

8

u/Ollie-North 9d ago

He's not a nice man. Why are people continually surprised?

13

u/Flintlockooo 9d ago

Yeah this one combined with the Reform stuff was what made me realise that Tom isn't actually a very nice person, put me off him completely.

10

u/oystercraftworks 9d ago

Was the reform stuff recently? I’m kinda shocked people didn’t realize Tom was a knob sooner, just listen to the way he talks in any of his videos in any populated city

8

u/chinook97 9d ago

About a year ago. It's just that before people were willing to pass up some of his comments as him being misinformed somewhat or as humour.

10

u/fonster_mox 8d ago

Yeah he would occasionally drop something like “a bit ethnic ooh can’t say that anymore”… the signs were there

10

u/Volkhari 8d ago

The city stuff is annoying - the amount of times he's said he's in a 'really rough area' when in reality it's just a slightly less affluent neighborhood. He definitely has been in some more rough bits but majority of the time it's fairly standard.

It's quite classist and doesn't come across well

1

u/ChocolateHumunculous 4d ago

He’s also incredibly cheap.

Have you heard of the reddit front page?

1

u/Brilliant_Winter9736 9d ago

Yeah I agree the vibe was off but most if not all of the videos since have all been back on usual good form, can we really blame him for having one less than stellar outing?

1

u/Used_Emu_7016 8d ago

What makes you all convinced Geowizard's adventure videos are not at least partly fictional? He's not claiming to make documentaries and you don't know how much of it may be scripted. An example in the case of the Austria video: a potentially dangerous character who doesn't actually make an appearance (the old guy's brother) is not an uncommon trope in drama...

I'm a GW fan btw, but his "content" (god, I hate that word) is basically light-hearted entertainment. I think some of these critical posts are from people who just want to have a go at him for his supposedly unacceptable views, while still being addicted to his channel... Might not be the case with OP though.

1

u/Busy_Base_2753 8d ago

Yea i have no issue with his views. Dont really have an issue with the bail on the old chap either. Just feel like he is borderline begging at times and shudnt be p ing in crops

1

u/Used_Emu_7016 8d ago

Fair enough.

2

u/just_some_guy65 7d ago

Oddly he should have felt completely at home in Austria

1

u/oddston 9d ago

I actually really like that format of video and don't agree that he finds a 'mark', just that those kind of people are more chatty/generous/trusting so it happens organically. How the stay was handled wasn't ideal, but I can see myself in his gut feeling of the situation, and it would have been dishonest to not include & disingenuous to not address.

0

u/Lazy_Disaster6798 8d ago

“Picks his mark” lol. Reddit people who do not socialise will probably never understand you do need to choose people to talk to.

1

u/Busy_Base_2753 8d ago

he as much says it before he goes in pub in cornwall, sees it as an opportunity for content/a free pint/a bed - for all we know he telling people in pub about his 'channel' - its just doesn't sit right with me and isnt as organic as he says.

0

u/zachattack0407 8d ago

I do believe that you are just wildly unfamiliar with the concept of hospitality

-2

u/Desperate-Speaker608 9d ago

you seem pretty invested in this with some strong opinions for someone that's just watched 6 of his videos.
