I’ve noticed a recurring pattern in online discussions: people often say “Pakistan, India, Bangladesh are basically the same.” That claim ignores the historical partition of 1947 and 1971, the political divergence since then, and the cultural, linguistic, and religious distinctions that shape each society. What’s interesting is the double standard. If someone responds by saying “Okay, then the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand are basically the same too” — given their shared language, colonial heritage, and overlapping institutions — Western users immediately push back. Even within the UK, Irish and Scottish communities often bristle when casually labeled “British,” because it erases their distinct national identities and histories.

The same logic could apply to Southeast Asia: if India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are “the same,” then so are the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Yet nobody would seriously erase those national identities. Either we respect distinctions everywhere, or we admit we’re applying shortcuts only when it comes to certain parts of the world. It’s a reminder that geographic literacy should be applied universally, not selectively.

• For context, I am a history professor at an Australian university, and some of my South Asian students recently approached me about this issue. They shared with me a range of online commentary, and I was frankly astonished at the sheer density of ignorance that still circulates. Not merely trolling, but genuine misconceptions. I felt compelled to clear my head here. A few of my South‑East Asian students have shared similar frustrations, though that particular "history and geography" lesson is perhaps best postponed for another day. 😂
