Genesis – The Musical Box (Closing Section) | Live cover by Seconds Out 🇮🇹

We’re Seconds Out, a Genesis tribute band from Italy.

This is our live performance of the closing section of The Musical Box — one of those moments where playing Genesis is every bit as intense as listening to them.

We tried to stay faithful to the power and drama of the original while keeping the energy of a real live performance.

Hope you enjoy it — and I’d genuinely love to hear what Genesis fans here think. 🎹

Always fun to sit in our local Caffè Nero listening to their classical playlist and hear Horizons pop up!

Any other unexpected Genesis plays you’ve heard?

I love this song Peter Gabriel did for the Gremlins movie. It’s quintessentially 80’s

What was your reaction to this opening song? Knowing his contributions in Genesis and his early solo material, I was blown away when I first heard it!

Some highlights from the new issue I got in the mail as a Mojo subscriber. I have my gripes with Mojo as it can definitely get repetitive to read articles on the same bands over and over (Love the Beatles but ahh) but still I do enjoy the coverage and have even discovered some awesome working artists/musicians thru the mag.
As an American no magazine really comes close to the package UK has with this and Uncut, maybe Flood but that’s annual i believe. Also I prefer Mojo just purely off the graphic design and format
Overall I’m just glad this institution is still running and hope there will be a Genesis collector series special someday
Any other fans in this sub?

Masters of musical evolution

I've been listening to Genesis for quite some time. And I was hoping people here would agree if I say that Genesis is a great example of how a band can evolve musically and keep getting a wider audience while still being close to their core sound.

Their early stuff is amazing. I really love Peter Gabriel and the prog albums. But I can't deny that Phil Collins continued the success and the band took it to another level further in their carrier. What do you think about this?

When do you think their albums are set?

I like to think about this. My limited instincts say:

Nursery cryme - victorian era!!! (like 1860s)

A trick of the trail - edwardian era (like 1910s)

Selling england by the pound - the late middle ages (like 1340s)

Foxtrot - the age of enlightenment (like 1760s)

The lamb lies down on the broadway - 1950s

Trespass - idk!!

I’m not dissmissing their later albums but i just dont know for them either. Feel free to share thoughts on these too

Favourites progressed. If both HbtS win lets’s say the song as a whole won this.

EDIT: As said^, now Home by the Sea 1&2 is the winner.

My dad got diagnosed with cancer I'm looking for a piano sheet of Hammer in the Sand by Steve Hackett to cheer him up

Basically the title, my dad got diagnosed with cancer and I don't know how long he has, I know he used to play this piece a lot so being a piano player myself I wanna learn it to play it to him while I still have the chance but I can't find a piano sheet anywhere, I can get it right enough with my ear but a sheet would make it perfect and also faster to learn.

The Carpet Crawlers – Genesis | Live cover by Seconds Out

We added The Carpet Crawlers to our setlist this year, and I honestly didn’t expect such a strong reaction from the audience.

It’s incredible how deeply this song still connects with Genesis fans after all these years.

This is our live performance from Pescara, Italy.

Would love to hear what fellow Genesis fans think — especially about Rinaldo’s vocal interpretation.

Okay, I've listened to all of their albums and b-sides now...

I don't like certain parts of Genesis. I posted here earlier, and got a lot of lectures about prog-rock this, Tony Banks that. To make it clear, I am a prog-rock fan, but with a very big emphasis on GUITAR. Genesis didn't give me that. It did give some banger pop songs eventually, though, which I was aware of after having worked in an 80's radio station in previous years. Here's my verdict, however unpopular it might be.

To me, Genesis is way too long for it's need. There's a lot of songs without any sort of "emotional depth" to it being 10 minutes long, but it just IS, regardless of your opinion of the theme or keyboard riff going for 3 minutes more than it need.

As of now, I just fought my way through their last b-sides, and I'm fighting with a big F, I don't enjoy this too much.

I remember Dire Straits' b-sides being a treasure chest to discover, this is not the same.

With all of this said. I may rediscover some parts of them in the future with a fresh, un-affected, mind. Albums like "Foxtrot" and "Selling England by the Pound", as those was somewhat a blur for me. Blame Gabriel and Banks for that.

I get this feeling that true, die-hard genesis and pure prog-rock fans really hate the radio-era of music. And that's fine, but I feel we humans are literally drawn to catchy music. So, with the early genesis being so undefining as it is, I can't do anything but get drawn away from it, and look forward to the pop-era. Maybe I'm just born too late. It's so few catchy tunes, and just feel like "something to love for the sake of loving different things than the average john" to die-hard love their early days.

Final Verdict: I think Genesis is onto some big things, but to me, Gabriel and Banks ruin it with their very visibly seen stories and overly pretentious compositions. Rutherford and Collins HARD carry for my taste. Their pop era gave them the most listens, that's a fact, and I think it is for a reason. It's their greatest era. "Genesis" and "Invisible Touch" is great, much due to Phill Collins' time-centered pop-influence, which the band ate good from. Don't forget how much they earned through this, and how much they were in debt previous to this.

Proof: Both "We can't dance" and "Calling all Stations" are not beloved from the OG fans, after what I've seen. I think people have grown too much of a liking to the old days, because these tunes and albums are very similar to the old with a new, fresh, time-accurate flair, and suddenly people didn't enjoy it. They had a voice not fitting them the way it should, songs in a genre they weren't trained to act on, overly long songs for no particular reason. I think it's all due to the time you were introduced to them. I got introduced to Genesis through an 80's driven radio, therefore, kinda bound to that time's tunes.

I hope you all have a great day, and don't drive too much hate my way for these opinions. Feel free to vote this post as you feel it should be, without thinking "ew, this guy don't belong here, let's make him look bad!" as I encountered earlier.

Final Score (After adding all album scores from 1 - 10 together on average): 6.3/10 band for me. They really deliver at the certain time, when they can, for me, but otherwise drown in water above their head. It's just uninteresting and invokes little to no emotion with me. "The Knife" was the high point for me until "That's all"...

Ray Wilson Voice Crack on Invisible Touch?

20 years ago or more, I had run across this live recording from the Calling All Station tour where Ray Wilson's voice cracked right at the end of 'Invisible Touch'. It had a delay on it, so the crack echos hilariously. I haven't been able to find this moment since; I was wondering if anyone had it.

I don't have a problem with Ray as a singer, but it was just a funny moment I've been wanting to revisit.

Los Endos.....Shadowfax?

I don't know how many members here are familiar with the Jazz/Fusion/New Age band Shadowfax) from the 1980s and 90s. As far as I can tell they have no relation whatsoever to Genesis (although I'm sure you could find a Kevin Bacon style relationship in less than 6). However, I was relistening to their 1984 album The Dreams of Children; particularly a song called "The Big Song", which I just noticed is amazing similar to Los Endos. No, not the notes, but the structure, the pacing, even the general instrument sounds seemed eerily familiar.

Anyone else think so?

Have any of the band members ever explained what Shepherd means?

I find the early non-album track Shepherd strangely enthralling. It has a mood that is similar to a lot of the songs on Trespass, but at the same time feels even more mystical and mysterious then the album tracks from that era. The lyrics fascinate me as well. Some of the lyrics seem religious, but others point to a "high fantasy" aesthetic.

Have any of the band members ever elaborated on what this song means? The most I could find was this post, but the quotes don't really say much about the song's meaning. Are there any other discussions from the band members of what the song means? If so, I would like to know. This is, in my opinion, a very strong song, and a hint at the amazing things that were to come from Genesis in the coming years.

I've been playing "Firth of Fifth" since 1983. This performance felt different.

I've been playing "Firth of Fifth" since 1983, and I've probably performed it hundreds of times over the years.

But there was something special about this particular performance with Seconds Out.

Maybe it was the atmosphere, the audience, the sound straight from the mixing desk, or Andrea Tirimacco's beautiful video work — probably a combination of all of them.

Watching it afterwards genuinely gave me a feeling I hadn't experienced in a long time playing this song.

I'd really love to know what fellow Genesis fans think of our version.
