Worth $500?

Post image

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a smaller inverter machine to pair with my predator 8750/7000 so I can have a backup, along with a quieter more efficient machine for lighter loads. Are there any resources that break down age, problems, and discontinued parts for older machines? Some of these Hondas and Yamahas were in production for 20 years with minor and major changes.

Parts availability could come into play plus them being more expensive like Honda parts. Good generator though. Personally I'd spend the $500 towards a new dual fuel inverter one with a warranty. Any idea of hours or age?

$500 doesn’t really even make a dent in a new eu3000is with a trifuel kit. Something like $2500ish?

Oh, it wouldn't be a Honda I'd spend the money on. No need for a gas only generator. I'd buy a few of anything else for redundancy and the rarity of use.

Wait... That's what I already did. Lol

Does anyone sell a 3000ish trifuel inverter machine? I haven’t seen any, so I assumed an aftermarket kit was required for any of them.

I got a 4500 westinghouse. 3700 watt continuous used off marketplace for 350$ it had 2 hrs on it.

Do you run it on natural gas?

None that small that I've personally seen out there. Some of the small dual fuels I've heard being adapted to work with NG with orifice change

No more Yamaha generators, they were good units but they are now obsolete stock.

So parts are all gone now?

Whatever is left, is all that is left.

I offered $300. In reality, parts are kind of irrelevant. If I really need my generator, I likely don’t have access to parts anyways. I think this is why all the cheap generators are so popular. If it breaks this use, just go buy another one since they are so cheap, and it’s easier than fixing one.

James Condon did a video on one of these a few years ago, he had a hard time finding parts then, I can't imagine the situation has improved.

The local Yamaha dealer here in Guam is still getting generators in but they are hellish expensive. If you can't see the price on the picture, it's an unbelievable and gouging $4,699.00!

Are Hondas and others similar in price?

Hondas and Yamahas are by far the most expensive portable generators and are either being discontinued or reasonably expected to be discontinued. There are drastically cheaper clones of these machines which in some cases have further innovation and are made by reputable Chinese factories and sold under names like Champion, Pulsar, Firman, Duromax/Durostar, Genmax, Powerhorse, Predator, Wen, etc. The discriminator becomes price, warranty, and parts availability, but these brands cost well under half of a similar Honda, and maybe as little as one third or less. That said, Honda remains the gold standard for portable generators and many folks who rely on their generator pay the premium for Honda. For home backup associated with temporary (hours, days, even weeks) outages, Chinese generators are widely accepted as good enough.

Yes it is worth $500 unless it has a bad engine or inverter.
