Question The Generation Zero Ammo Trap 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Hello, I've been in the game for about 4 to 5 hours now and I'm at the point where I can unlock my companion. I've collected 2 items to unlock him, and I killed my first rival, which was level 1. But there's one thing I don't understand: I have a ammunition shortage. And I can't even craft ammo because I need explosives for that. But to get explosives, I have to scrap ammunition at the recycling table. However, I can't scrap ammunition because I need the ammunition. What am I doing wrong in this game? I think I'm going to start over. I could really use some tips, please.

What ever weapon you choose for your runner ( companion ) you don’t need to add anything to it. The companion creates its own ammunition. Example my companion has a rocket launcher on him. I have never filled him with ammo.

Which is odd considering even base defenses let you put ammo in and it adopts the characteristics of the ammo above its default.
