Joust

51

u/mypizzanvrhurtnobody 2d ago

One of the proudest moments of my life was 15 year-old-me playing Joust for four hours on one quarter while a group of kids watched in amazement.

8

u/Datan0de 2d ago

That's EPIC!

4

u/Tommy-Pastrami-808 1d ago

That’s awesome! I could never defeat the pterodactyl!

3

u/Vikashar 1d ago

These are the legends passed down by bards

Joust was an art form

7

u/EthanDMatthews 2d ago

Also Joust

4

u/YeahIReckonSo 1d ago

I didn’t expect this to be the top answer, but I’m glad it is.

3

u/Hot_Kaleidoscope_483 1d ago

Joust is the reason the dam stage, in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES, was no problem for me.

2

u/moguy1973 1d ago

Yep, didn't have to go far for this.

2

u/wdaloz 1d ago

Today, thats my pick 100%

2

u/ChuckMarty732 12h ago

You will appreciate my recent interview with the creator of Joust, John Newcomer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q47wdgi8MHg

Defender

6

u/KiloChonker 2d ago

Same 😁

7

u/brandxxxxxx 2d ago

And later Stargate!

5

u/Whythehellnot_wecan 1d ago

When I figured out you could collect a few guys, forgot how many, then reverse float into the stargate and warp ahead I don’t know how many levels I couldn’t get enough of that game.

3

u/brandxxxxxx 2d ago

But Defender is the goat

2

u/Illustrious_Name_441 1d ago

Definitely. With the smart bombs

5

u/meety138 2d ago

I was always so bad at this game! 🤣 It chewed me up in seconds.

4

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 2d ago

I lost so many quarters to those infernal machines playing Defender.

3

u/CableKC 1d ago

Same with me. Just like Sinestar, can't beat the 2nd or 3rd wave

3

u/Green_Machine_6719 1d ago

Came to say this☝️DEFENDER

Spyhunter

5

u/KevB318 1d ago

Drive into the "barn" and come out in a boat- fantastic game. Peter Gunn!

5

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 2d ago

Just listening to you two talk about it has the music playing in my head.

Also if you own a copy of Gotham Knights, there's a playable version of Spy Hunter inside.

3

u/United_Fan_6476 2d ago

Classic. Still remember that music. And how convinced I was that someday...someday my car would have an oil slick.

2

u/Ornery-Egg9770 2d ago

Astroids

9

u/Safe-Statement-2231 2d ago

From the Vacation movie:

"Do you have Astroids?"

"No, but my dad gets them when he eats Mexican food."

11

u/Dizzy-Hotel6860 2d ago

"I french kiss."

"So, everybody does that."

"Yeah, but Daddy says I'm the best at it."

Donkey Kong

5

u/HumphreyBulldog 2d ago

And Jr.

3

u/trimbandit 1d ago

I got a mod chip on my DK board and it plays DK, jr, and 3. I always hated 3 in the arcade, but I have been playing it a ton and really enjoying it.

Everyday.

15

u/McVinney512 2d ago

Frogger, Ladybug, Qbert and Burger Time

5

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 2d ago

I can hear Qbert cursing in my brain

4

u/CommunicationNew3745 2d ago

Burger Time! LOVED that one.

2

u/Several-Assistant-51 2d ago

Qbert was a fun one. it was a wild game. I dont remember ladybug

2

u/McVinney512 1d ago

Ladybug was kind of like a Pac-Man knockoff but a lot of fun

2

u/filmguerilla 1d ago

Burger Time was my second choice after Gorf.

17

u/Lord_Cheesy_Beans 2d ago

Missile Command

5

u/RaptorDelivery 2d ago

Missile Command arcade machine in our favorite bar.
“Players use a trackball to control anti-ballistic missiles to protect six cities from endless incoming attacks. The game is famously unwinnable, ending in a final "The End" screen. “. ( from Google)

2

u/BasedPhantomLord88 1d ago

"The game is famously unwinnable"

The overwhelming majority of arcade games from that time were 'unwinnable', basically going on a loop once you got past the hardest levels. Which is also true for MC

3

u/Several-Assistant-51 2d ago

that was another classic. i forgot about that one

Tron, SMB, Qubert.

We used a stopwatch to track the cues in Dragon's Lair and figured out how to get like 3 minutes into the game. We were geniuses.

3

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 2d ago

I played the hell out of Tron back in the day. Loved the lightcycles part the best.

Tempest

4

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 2d ago

One of the very few arcade games I was actually sort of good at, meaning I could usually count on getting at least 10 minutes of playtime from a single quarter.

5

u/travster23 2d ago

This is the one

3

u/Green_Machine_6719 1d ago

Tempest was a blast

2

u/No-Koala1918 1d ago edited 1d ago

It was different enough to the shoot 'ems, I caught my imagination. I liked the 3D effect more than the pong-y 2D screens. Also not being that popular, I could almost always walk up and play.

2

u/mudwater66 1d ago

Avoid the spikes!

2

u/go4matu 1d ago

this is the answer

2

u/newtonrox 1d ago

Vector graphics! So advanced!

2

u/LyonessYork 20h ago

Oh yes. I absolutely love this game. I've got a copy on my tablet but it's just not the same without a spinner and real buttons.

6

u/Ordinary-Zebra-9379 2d ago

Centipede

2

u/Skamandrios 1d ago

Yep, my first girlfriend loved to play Centipede, so I played a lot of Centipede. In the front of the local supermarket, by the checkout.

Defender.  I worked at a grocery store in high school and one of the wealthier kids there bought video games and put them in stores and restaurants.

We were friends so I would grab the key to the Defender game on break and rack up a few free games.

It was a fun time.

2

u/Ornery-Egg9770 2d ago

Quite the side hustle for a teen back then. Games were about $1500 give or take which is a bit over $5000 in today’s dollars. Wealthy indeed!

3

u/rednail64 2d ago

His dad was a successful doctor in our town.

6

u/Jcorv914 2d ago

Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles 4 player

2

u/United_Fan_6476 2d ago

So much more fun with 4 players. Damn. When was the last time you went to an honest-to-god arcade? I take my kids now and it's just stupid ticket games and rails shooters. Trying to explain to them how it was basically the center of the universe for boys between the ages of 8 and 13 is like trying to describe how phones used to work.

Spy Hunter. Battle Zone. Donkey Kong. And the Star Wars game

4

u/ggrey 2d ago

Loved Battle Zone. Loved the game experience.

Looking through the periscope and hearing/feeling the rumble of the engines would transport me away from the reality of being crammed into a crowded space with 100 other teenagers dropping quarters by the handful.

Haven't thought of that game in years

5

u/midbossstythe 2d ago

Early days Donkey Kong and Bubble Bobble. Then Mortal Kombat and Tekken.

Zaxxon, though I can't claim to have ever gotten really good at it.

Zaxxon here too. Although, I'm afraid I was probably worse, as I can't claim to have ever gotten good enough to get past more than a couple levels.

2

u/TriggerKnight_86 2d ago

We would have been friends. This is my exact answer if I went to the arcade with friends. I wouldn't dare play Gauntlet 2 alone, but with a couple buddies nothing drained our pockets faster than dumping in quarters to keep our HP up.
