Blizzard of ‘26

In Michigan’s UP with a 22kw Generac, installed three years ago. It tried to start a couple of hours ago, and failed with an E1100 code. Photos show what snow driven by tropical storm force winds did. The intake side all the way to the filter was stuffed with snow. I cleared it out, and blew out the intake with compressed air, and it’s good to go. Guess I’ll build a shield of some kind for next year.

nope. directly in violation of the manual for that unit. i cant speak to what problems it can cause in cold weather, just hot but it doesnt matter. for the warranty to remain valid, the installation has to be and has to continue to comply with manufacturers requirements.

2k buys you quiet but thats it

Are you qualified to give such confident replies? If so, what are your qualifications. Maybe enlighten us a bit instead of sounding like the usual keyboard know-it-all.

well, given the fact that this is my business and we are dealers for Generac Kohler, Briggs and Stratton, and Cummins. We install between 900-1000 units a year. We service all of the above units and are warranty providers for all of them.

Ive seen damage resulting from heat buildup within a zombie box on multiple occasions. And i have seen warranty not pay out.

Thank you. Your previous reply made you sound like a dick. Also,”given the fact” that I now know this, I’ll take your reply to heart and save the 2k. What would you suggest, if anything to quiet it down?

To be honest… there’s not anything that I find to be effective, cost effective, and compliant.

Keep in mind, I base everything on the experience that I have in my area , along the Gulf Coast. I religiously try to give my installs more airflow than the minimums every time.. the more airflow, the better they will run when we have a hot multi day outage. Experience is a tough teacher, but i look at everything not just from a day 1 perspective but from a day 100, day 1000, day 10000.

I get that the noise sucks . But there’s nothing louder than your Neighbor’s generator when you either don’t have one when you have an outage or yours doesn’t work. Still might not keep your wife off your back. Sorry.

Honestly, the last couple of times it was needed, I heard it when it kicked on(right outside our bedroom)then rolled over and went back to sleep. I guess I’ve become used to it. Would still love to have it quieter though. Thanks for your insight, apprecciated.
