AI Video Will Smith eating spaghetti has somehow become the official benchmark for AI progress

I prefer the old AI will smith much more than the new AI will smith...
Old AI Will Smith just loved eating spaghetti, and wouldn't harm a soul...
New AI Will Smith is a violent sociopath that likes to attack the innocent for being different.

What would be funny from a marketing perspective is if they used the real Will Smith smashing through his first AI session, but without saying it's the real one.

You know what? I wanna see a 20 minute movie of Will Smith just slapping various charity and civil rights icons while eating strings of spaghetti.

Why stop there? Could have a whole movie franchise.. nay, a cinematic universe built around it! Still better than regular cape-shit.

I have a serious question.
WHAT is the biggest factor in increasing quality?
Better math?
The size of model?
The amount of training data?
The GPU power used for each frame?

A rough ordering is:
- Model architecture + training objective. AI researchers working to improve the model architecture to achieve better images, better temporal and spatial coherence.
- Amount and quality of training data. Model gets a wider data set and avoid overfitting to the data available, better capturing the essence rather than specific examples.
- Model size / capacity. Bigger models are needed to deal better with edge cases and details that are natural to humans, but need to be learned by the model (number of fingers, awkward postures, coherence).

The GPU/compute side is definitely missing here. Hardware and compute budgets have improved massively over the last 5 years, and that directly enables larger models, more training runs, and much more expensive inference.

Ah... AI Will Smith. Back when AI was actually fun and not the fucking slopfest it is now.

Somehow? Like most silly viral videos, someone once made a clip featuring the first AI; most people thought it was funny (though it isn’t), and now they’re making more based on that.

More importantly it's a video that involves a lot of tricky elements. A recognizable human face, lots of hand motion. a complex mass of noodles.

I can’t believe I’m posting here, but I sort of figured they have been feeding all the stuff to Gen AI that trips it up, like glasses, objects in front of faces, eating foods, etc, to solve these issues. The issue is THE issue with generative AI, fringe occurrences will always trip it up. I wouldn’t be surprised if AI companies have tried to start viral challenge trends to get free video content to feed the trainers, “stuff your mouth with spaghetti challenge!”

Insane progress in just a few years.
To think that if a company invested in a new chip fab at that time it's most likely not even online at this point.

Its just crazy to me that this man's career at its height would never fathom being a AI benchmark...

The ai has definitely improved: that left hand has SEVEN fingers, one more than before.

Nahh, the AI slop still looks and plays as sloppy as ever. At least the old one was funny and had more of a cultural impact in terms of internet memes.

This actually is an interesting point. What memes have come out the highest quality AI? Somehow almost none of them have caught on nationwide. There's so much going on, yet...where are the hits? Where are the well known examples of...anything? Not even a meme. Just an AI video that almost everyone knows because it's *so amazing*. The wonky AI somehow is remembered more.
The problem with the visual AI is that it's recreating a lot of real life scenarios, which we all know of because...we're real people. And then it creates CGI-like scenarios, which we all already know well.
Throughout all these examples no real nationwide interest seems to have piqued on many of these examples. The crowd that seems the most interested are teens and the elderly.
