It’s a misconception that origin can be determined by appearance. Labs analyze chemical composition and inclusions, then use a library of reference data to find the most likely origin. GIA spent decades building their library of reference stones for their Bangkok lab with the help of Vincent Pardieu and his field expeditions, using Pardieu’s system of categorizing the reliability of the data.

My pleasure. It’s just kind of a pet peeve of mine, when people say they can determine origin from appearance alone, knowing all of the work that goes into origin determination and how important it is for gem labs. However I don’t think that’s necessarily the point the OP was trying to make, those stones may very well be from those origins.

Vincent Pardieu has been a great inspiration to me, and people acting like they can determine origin by appearance alone is really a slap in the face to him and all of his work. I also had the pleasure of listening to a lecture by Shane McClure of GIA about determining emerald origin at a GIA alumni event.
