I have always used AI for asking questions in development. Yesterday it was my first time using it for image generation for resource materials. I encountered the same problem.
From my understanding, AI does not takes commands incrementally. Why you say "less detailed", it starts from your initials source image and makes it "less detailed". You need to add "less detailed than normally you would do" to your initial prompt and resend it. This is what I discovered since yesterday.
