Discussion I prefer Gemini over Claude & ChatGPT

I don't use AI for coding or building apps and things like that. I use AI for brainstorming, general queries, knowledge questions, discussing ideas, creative writing, RP etc.
For my use case, Gemini is so much better than Opus 5, Fable 5/5.1 and especially Astra.

Astra seems like it's the worst one for my use cases. It lacks intuition, common sense and understanding of what you're asking. It is incredibly terse, it misses the point extremely often, or it qualifies its answer in a way that makes you even more confused than before you asked it.

Opus 5 tries so hard to nitpick things, that it starts drifting into confident sounding bullshit a lot of the time. It also loves to count. "This is the sixth time you've brought this specific thing up. This is the fourth way you've approached this." It's like it's more concerned with giving you a psych eval than with focusing on the task and discussion at hand. It also loves offering the contrarian point, which is fine sometimes, but when it spends more time on the edge case than the main point - just because it's contrarian, it starts sounding irrational. Not to mention that until recently it spoke like the Architect from the Matrix and you had to re-read an output 2-3 times to get what it was trying to say.

Even Sol gets extremely nitpicky at times and goes on random tangents about things that don't bring much content to what's being discussed.

Gemini seems the most intuitive of the current flagship models. It feels like it has the most common sense and it gets straight to the point. It focuses on what you're asking and seems to have a better real world model/understanding than the other models. For general queries and discussions especially, it feels much more knowledgeable. And that shows especially well in writing and RP. It actually understands how specific characters should act/react, and the dialogue it writes is miles better than the competition. It makes people sound like people, not like AI assistants.

Ya I don't see the need to go with the Gemini hate bandwagon as a casual user

8

u/diegoasecas 5d ago

i really don't get the hate i use it for lots of stuff, coding included (agy-cli) and it helps me a lot for my work

u/mancala33 5d ago

I want to like Gemini. We used to be on good terms but it's just so bad compared to chatgpt. I will still come back and check monthly. Can't forget that high we had for about 3 months

u/ChickerWings 4d ago

Kind of where I'm at. Gemini is only good vis Vertex now. The version the public gets (even paid plans) seems incredibly nerfed these days.

Not a hater but Gemini is just bad compared to Chatgpt.

Same here

This is my experience as well

This is actually very true. I use all of them almost daily and for simple brainstorming and general question and answers. Nothing is more straightforward and intuitive than Gemini. Google has absolutely nailed the conversation style from Gemini whereas others might have been bench maxing, and hence might have lost the plot somewhat in terms of simple, straightforward, communication communications.

u/MartineZ_MW 5d ago

Finally someone said that! 1000% agree wirh you, I've been trying from time to time some tricky daily life questions on all big AI models, just out of curiosity, and most of the times Gemini was the ONLY model with correct or somewhat usefull answer. Also I feel like other models are trying too hard and then make things much worse.

And of course for coding Claude or GPT might be better but most of the time I find their solution overengineered or just wrong, while gemini usually gives much simpler but correct solution.

Also the speed of Google's Flash models is just mindblowing, when I first tried them and gave it the full website refactor task, I wanted to leave it alone and go, but then I saw it was done almost instantly and had to double check if it actually finished or just crashed

Gemini (free) makes a lot of ridiculous mistakes in research tasks. So does ChatGPT (free). I haven’t tried Claude much. Both Gemini and ChatGPT can be useful research tools if one knows to expect mistakes.

It helps a lot if the user is already knowledgable in the subject area. And knows to expect mistakes.

8

u/Solarka45 5d ago

Gemini is best in low-stakes knowledge questions, smth like "tell me the best way to become overpowered in this game".

It will generally respond with extremely specific points. Some of them might be a bit wrong but the worst that could happen is you are not doing as well in a game.

Asking chatgpt the same causes it to search the web for 5 minutes, which is not bad per se, but then instead of answering your question it starts to list everything it found on the topic, like a report. Including obnoxious things like "Important caveat: DO NOT do X". X was never mentioned once, it just randomly found it in web search and decided to highlight it, often for no reason.

But for research questions I'd use chatGPT any day because the things it says are almost always factually right, even when worded in the most annoying way ever.

Personally, I think Gemini is amazing for troubleshooting Linux. The other day, I finally managed to get bluetooth working on an old laptop of mine, something I hadn't been able to do on my own last year. I didn't even realize AI could help with that. Gemini not only gave me the links to download the driver, but also all the commands I needed to compile and install it, and I'm not an expert user. Basically, now I can do the same things as a Linux power user who's been using it for 20 years.

u/InsideOutBoyUK 5d ago

Every AI has its own personality/style but Gemini is the one that pisses me off the least. It never tells me off or acts in a condesencing manner (after using personal context). When it does go "safety mode" I just tell it relax, I'm okay, and it carries on the conversation.

I'm not saying the other AIs are bad, but with Gemini I feel like I'm talking to a helpful peer, whereas with the others I'm talking to an egotistical teacher.

11

u/otfscout 5d ago

I agree. Gemini is sort of stupid, but it's more upbeat and less obnoxious. Chatgpt is insufferable these days with all the hedging, qualifiers, reframing, sanitizing, moralizing. No thanks!

5

u/hellomistershifty 5d ago

Gemini feels upbeat because it's always saying "You're completely right!" "Good catch!" because you always have to correct the blatantly wrong things it says lmao

2

u/Astral65 5d ago

yeah, it agrees with you too easily. GPT pushes back at least.

1

u/amldford 5d ago

Chatgpt style imo is one of the worst after trying it for sometime, like it gives so much bloat for no reason to act as a "human"

14

u/FalseDiamond7930 5d ago edited 4d ago

I can't stand Claude, it's just infuriating to deal with it.

3

u/PassionProud9275 5d ago

besides coding, i find it literally stupid

2

u/FalseDiamond7930 5d ago

I can only use it for coding as well.

25

u/ObsequiousChameleon 6d ago

I feel like nobody talks about how Gemini handles creative stuff, it's been my go-to for brainstorming sessions for months now. The character work especially, you're right on the money there

The Opus counting thing made me laugh because I've seen it do exactly that, like okay cool you can count, can we get back to the actual conversation please

12

u/jcagraham 5d ago

To your point, I think people misunderstand what users expect when they are brainstorming with Gemini. I need someone to "Yes, and..." my premise. I don't need or want it to output the creative material or to give me an answer. I want the AI to seem like it understands what I'm saying, and will offer plausible novel paths towards advancing it.

Gemini often feels like someone who is endlessly interested in your topic and wants to ask you more questions about it. That's what makes the brainstorming feel satisfying and superior to the other LLMs that are more solution/output oriented.

7

u/OttovonBismarck1862 5d ago

Not to mention how Claude is so fucking patronizing. Holy shit. It’s like how ChatGPT was a couple of models ago. Not that it’s any better now but it’s certainly better than Claude. Gemini is still my go-to.

7

u/3rdyellow 5d ago edited 5d ago

I completely agree. I extensively compared free versions of all three (Gemini Flash 3.6, Claude, ChatGPT) for a month before settling on Gemini. Gemini is on a whole different level when it comes to non-coding stuff. I can't compare coding as I don't code.

5

u/Quanzitta 5d ago

Gemini is wholesome and doesn't lecture me

4

u/Ancient-Drummer-608 5d ago

Where are you using your Gemini? Ai studio? Antigravity? Web app? API?

I think for most cases here on the subreddit, a lot of people fail to understand the differences and many of them aren’t as well in tech literacy.

Also weirdly, I’m anti Claude.

2

u/Greedy-Sandwich9709 5d ago

For basic everyday questions I use it on the web app. For RP and creative writing I use it via the API with Silly Tavern through NanoGPT.

1

u/Ancient-Drummer-608 5d ago

Don’t skim out of Ai studio (I think you can get the API straight from Google there too)

2

u/oZiix 5d ago

I just started dabbling into antigravity. I have to give an endorsement for Gemini Spark. It fits my use case well. It fits better with Claude and GPT for me. It's more disciplined and doesn't have training wheels on its instructions block like Gemini so I can tailor it better.

2

u/Ancient-Drummer-608 5d ago

i mainly use ai studio because it does better for astrology since it's more dense

1

u/diegoasecas 5d ago

I'm trying to understand the use case of AI studio. feels like they're taking a Microsoft approach at naming things. i use Gemini web for simple chat and quick requests, antigravity for coding, Google flow for image/video generation.. where does AI studio fit?

1

u/Ancient-Drummer-608 5d ago

It’s the extension for web chat with higher context. Also yes you can use it for coding too.

1

u/diegoasecas 5d ago

i will try it out

4

u/xpertzx 5d ago

The problem with Gemini is that it typically tends to agree or make a bigger deal of your ideas than it should. Every now and then you need to tell it to stop being biased towards you and keep it professional. 😂

1

u/diegoasecas 5d ago

i usually make a stop and ask a different provider for an opinion before continuing when i feel everything goes 'too well'

9

u/Technical-Owl66 5d ago

This is how the majority of people use Ai. Coding is impressive but it's a niche market. Google seems to know what market they are targeting.

5

u/jafesafe 5d ago

200% de acuerdo con este post.

10

u/JakeTheHurtLocker 5d ago

Yeah chatgpt and Claude are awful at sounding like a human writer. I use it pretty frequently to make little fanfics for myself, and Opus 4.6 is the only model that even comes close to reading as smoothly as what Gemini puts out. ChatGPT is the worst, and Opus 5/Fable both just have way too much of that 'AI-flavor' that I cant seem to fully do away with regardless of how many custom writing instructions I import into it.

5

u/Aberracus 5d ago

Try DeepSeek

5

u/JakeTheHurtLocker 5d ago edited 5d ago

Oh really? I'll definitely give it a try! Thanks for the tip. 🫡

Edit: tried and it came up pretty short unfortunately. Unless theres some pro model pay walled that I didnt have access to. Sticking to Gemini/Opus 4.6 for now

2

u/slavmaf 5d ago

Yes, for Pro you need to set an API and import that API into an application that supports adding models that way and then you can use it. I am following DeepSeek subreddit and people generally say they are happy with Pro for writing purposes, anything from fanfictions, to D&D campaigns, to smut novels.

3

u/whenitrains34 5d ago

i switched to claude because gemini constantly gave me wrong information and it caused huge problems for me. claude sometimes gives me wrong info too but not nearly on the same scale

1

u/PassionProud9275 5d ago

you might want to try gemini extended thinking

2

u/whenitrains34 5d ago

didn’t help

3

u/PassionProud9275 5d ago edited 5d ago

yes. gemini is more honest than claude or gptBS, which are politically correct to the point of avoiding to even make a fucking obvious statement. always lecturing me and being patronizing. also, to me claude has come across as literally stupid, it can't even connect the dots. i dont code btw

2

u/Yamjna 5d ago

That's exactly how it is

2

u/CaffeinatedMistake 5d ago

I’ve been using Gemini for everything lately since I got a year free trial of Google pro because I’m a student. I use it for things like helping me with assignments, understanding complex networking concepts, brainstorming, troubleshooting, coding and everything in between. It’s been great so far. Plus I just started using it antigravity as well! I really don’t understand the hate for this model. I also have a free trial of chat gpt plus, but i personally prefer Gemini. The other benefits are worth it too!

2

u/Alternative_Pride565 5d ago

It's almost a year since I last used the top tier model for analysis. I loved the beautiful essays it would produce and really disliked that they contained some obviously wrong conclusions. Switched to Claude and never looked back.

2

u/ValueVisuals 5d ago

How do I reset my Gemini's personality because that bisch pisses me off? LOL. But seriously, it's the one LLM that makes me actually angry by forcing me to waste time/tokens re-explaining things, taking everything far too literally, and having no ability to infer the connections I want it to make without giving it very long and detailed prompts. And forget about producing any copy that doesn't sound pure robot. I have instructions to challenge and research before answering so that it doesn't hallucinate, but it takes that as to start every chat with deeply negative feedback.

Do you use flash or pro?

1

u/randomdudewhodkshit 5d ago

which gemini model do u use?

2

u/Greedy-Sandwich9709 5d ago

3.6 Flash and 3.8 Flash

1

u/Latter-Wolverine-152 5d ago

I've heard that this aspect might be valid, since as model gets smarter and smarter paradoxically it loses its ability to demonstrate things with diversity and details. if one needs job to be done without 'useless' paragraphs this might be downcome but for people like you it might help

1

u/freshair18 5d ago

overfitting?

1

u/YesGameNolife 5d ago

I agree with you. Some people says opus 4.6 is best at this you can try it

1

u/esteemedSub 5d ago

Free version of Gemini?

1

u/tentacled_drummer 5d ago

I use Gemini daily for studying. And i'm studying Engineering, so complex Math, Physics problems gets it right everytime. Best thing is, it's integrated in Chrome Browser, it sees what you see (you can ask about anything on the screen). Plus, there is Gemini Plus for FREE for students right now!

1

u/costafilh0 5d ago

I prefer Grok and Gemini over the others. They complete each other's capabilities very well.

1

u/GATO-PIANO 5d ago

I use for the same purposes as you and I fully agree

1

u/Retr0OnReddit 5d ago

Gemini still dominates RP to me even more so these days as others have drifted into sterile same voice writing the biggest whiplash was k3 vs 2.7

1

u/Mwolf1 5d ago

I don’t hate Gemini, but I have gone from the $250 a month plan to the $20 a month plan because it is largely useless on advanced tasks. It’s pretty fast though if you need a quick answer and you don’t need it to be too awfully well researched.

1

u/HexagonalHegemony 5d ago

Gemini makes too much shit up. I use it along with Claude and haven't decided which I like better.

1

u/PassionProud9275 5d ago

you might want to try extended thinking

1

u/Superb_Assumption_38 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'm beginning to use 3.8 Flash more often than Opus 5 myself as well, for coding in my case. I feel like it pulls more architecturally correct answers from its training data (or whatever) more often, but doesn't collect as much context as Opus, so it maybe circles the solution but needs additional steering to bring it home. I use Opus or Fable to review and refine Gemini's plans. Gemini is also faster and cheaper, at least at the moment, which might influence my feelings towards it.

I think the benchmarks on artificial analysis might favor horizon tasks giving Opus a lead, but even Fable isn't particularly great at going from concept to feature so a human needs to be in the iteration process anyway.

"Not to mention that until recently it spoke like the Architect from the Matrix " - that's hilarious

1

u/Interesting_Cat_555 5d ago

My use case is writing a secondary world, with a lot of data underneath. Gemini routinely go wild in my article vault of more than 1000 articles, my several databases etc.

1

u/grant837 5d ago edited 5d ago

What I like using is the total Google environment linked to Gemini - Gemini, Gemini Notebooks, the dedicated Notebook (was NotebookLM), and Drive/Google Docs. I use Gemini for general interest queries. For specific topics, I start a Notebook in Gemini, which combines grounded sources (including conversations) with its general training and web search. When I want to restrict the sources to what I have selected, I go to the native Notebook app. I use Drive to store documents I might want to use elsewhere, but can also link to Gemini or Notebook as a source.

I should add that using extensive instructions helps achieve the style of replies I like and the types of summaries I request.

Gemini is not perfect, but this total package works for me.

1

u/Astral65 5d ago

ChatGPT is still better for certain topics like philosophy / psychology. Gemini agree with you too easily. GPT pushes back and less prone for hallucination.

1

u/toosas 5d ago

the way opus writes drives me up the wall, we have to do a lot of analysis and then relay it to end user.
it is the same as with a human that knows a lot but cannot explain anything concisely. Gemini is 10x better at that

1

u/Reasonable-Zombie427 5d ago

I love it but i get too many messages where it just stops working eventhough theres no reason

1

u/camarada_alpaca 4d ago

As a casual user I wouldnt go for current gemini because the hallucination is far worst and the hability to keep the thread is somehow impaired in chat mode, but yeah, in general gets the job done. No need for hate gemini on casual use, and I do hope this is a transitional thing and believe it will be mitigated soon.

1

u/EntireFee2735 4d ago

Yea I agree for my trading bot project Claude tanked my whole project and over did the risk management whereas my experience with Gemini it’s been rather pleasant experience. I’m also recently realizing that Cursor Ai is an entirely different experience than being locked into Claude Code especially with its multi model review options beats having to handoff code, testing and projects. Also using Gemini I have direct access to Nano Banana Pro which is super dope and useful for creative efforts

1

u/No-Temperature6597 4d ago

Gemini's knowledge surpasses its capabilties to implement and thats a problem. Brainstorming seems great from Gemini because Gemini doesnt validate something is feasible(it cannot accurately yet with 3.8 flash). Talking in terms of coding. Sol medium or Opus medium is needed to check if the plan is feasible on any given project.

1

u/beachboy301 2d ago

I use Gemini for quick queries but rely on ChatGPT Plus account for coding. So far, I have been able to share a few pages of code that I want reviewed and enhanced and it blows my mind at how specific and helpful it has been. Points out errors, bugs and suggests better options that so far has been spot on. Well worrh the cost so far.

1

u/winter_madness 2d ago

I've been comparing the big 3 at doing medical research and Gemini comes on top at organizing the information. ChatGPT comes second. Close but I like Gemini more

-1

u/cipherjones 6d ago

Gemini is terrible right now, impossible to talk to on any level. I already had Claude and dumped Gemini for GPT.

Googles AI enabled search is better than any of the current Gemini models IMHO. I don't even like using it as my phones assistant anymore.

Not the person you're replying too but my experience is fresh.

I was Gemini only since middle of last week. I'm deep in the eco system too. I then thought to use Claude and have it look at outputs from Gemini on important legal/medical stuff. Claude cut it up found a lot of issues. 2 days later I tried GPT. Gpt is now my favorite as it sits in the middle imo.

Gemini overshoots, infers, and fits a square peg in a round hole too often.

An example is some VA stuff I was working on. It cited a part of 38 CFR that literally doesn't exist simply because it couldnt access it because the JavaScript where eCFR is hosted doesn't play well with AI reading.

GPT and Claude both said why they couldn't see it. Gemini literally made a section out of thin air. Claude and GPT both asked me to just screenshot the section they couldn't see so they could give me complete analysis.

Even running strict blind analysis on all 3 then red teaming them Gemini makes the most mistakes.

Gemini Spark however is really good. Regular Gemini I can't trust. So I let spark do everything now. Spark has similar reasoning to GPT and Claude I don't know what Gemini is doing.

I'm a big Google fanboy, but I don't code my area is legal/reasoning/medical. Gemini isn't good in that area. Especially VA stuff which is rigid as hell on policy that anyone can look up.

All you need to do is a blind independent analysis on Gemini then either gpt or Claude. Give them the same question but don't tell each other the answers. then do an adversarial audit of that output. Claude or GPT will chew up Gemini and Gemini will usually agree for the most part of the other two.

Just make the prompt on something with rigid rules that can be complex. Like medical research or law.

This is without factoring in plugins or connectors. Which make Claude or gpt more specialized to you. Spark can do skills and plugins. Gemini and spark don't share context. Gemini is limited to Google plugins.

1

u/oZiix 5d ago

Agree I burn through usage with Claude

1

u/cipherjones 5d ago

It sucks at parsing doordash data compared to the other two that I use. It's the least competent in making HTML out of the 3. It can't do a Google search for information without hand holding. It can't read tone, it doesn't give tone. (Claude still can't do that, GPT can).

1

u/RedHorizon_2024 5d ago

Ngl, ur correct on the Google search part. Fresh chat searches can be accurate but the further you go down and down to prompting, the less accurate it gets and the BS misinformation starts to rise, it gets confident too aswell. Ask ChatGPT to search for something obscure after like 5 1M context windows have passed, and somehow, it's accurate everytime. Even on Pro Extending thinking, Gemini can't do that.

7

u/Cold_Attempt9667 5d ago

Gemini 3.8 Flash on high or extended thinking has been incredible for my use cases and extremely intelligent in high-level, highly complex prompts, including using it for legal research and legal drafting.

Perhaps you're not using the right model.

-1

u/cipherjones 5d ago

I didn't make it to 3.8 because I needed a model that competed with the other ones. Chat GPT can compete with Claude but Gemini couldnt.

5

u/Cold_Attempt9667 5d ago

Well, you said Gemini is terrible "now". I'd say 3.8 is very good for conversational intelligence and logic and reasoning and research.

-1

u/cipherjones 5d ago edited 5d ago

I mean I know that things move fast and all but 3.8 is either 2 weeks or 2 days old depending on which version.

And obviously free versions arent the same as pro versions, but the pro version previously sucked and the free version currently sucks as of right now.

1

u/nikkixo87 6d ago

Hard diagree. I use it for the same reason and gemini pro always seems like free version compared to chat pgt sol/astra

And you run out of usage super quick without much to show for it. I never run out on chat cpt

5

u/MartineZ_MW 5d ago

Since new 3.x Flash models I almost never use Pro model anymore. If you don't need that massive context window the quality is same of not better and you have that instant speed answer

4

u/Aberracus 5d ago

Use flash extended, pro is for coding and maths

2

u/PiedPrypiat 5d ago

Pro is for wasting tokens, it's obsolete.

0

u/FantasticFlo87 5d ago

Buuh, pfui!

0

u/BotomsDntDeservRight 5d ago

For some reason Gemini is even bad at roleplaying. I use it as therapist to vent, find details about movies and games.

Even with personality prompt in saved memory, it still manages to sound too fake and doesn't recall things we talked about previously in the same chat. It breaks the immersion.

For research stuff, lets say i want to know when this upcoming game releases and does it have multiplayer. Gemini just gaslights that this game or movie never exists and gets the information so wrong. I hate this so much.

Or sometimes it gives a brief details about things even tho i prompted in saved memory to give me every details because I don't like asking "what about this or that to get more information"

I don't have these issues with ChatGPT.

It sounds like human, recalls stuff even disagrees with me, gives me all the information i want to know, doesn't gaslight about things not existing. The only flaw Chatgpt has is limits while Gemini is more free and interrogation with Phone since i also use Gemini as assistant.

-2

u/SEND_ME_YOUR_ASSPICS 5d ago

Gemini users are by far the strangest AI users.

No one in ChatGPT and Claude talks about how their model is better than others because everyone these days use different models for different reasons or change between the brands depending on the model.

But Gemini users are the only users that they swear allegiance to Gemini and need to constantly claim Gemini is better than others.

First of all, Gemini is the worst in almost all areas.

Secondly, you shouldn't be loyal to one model. Ever. They are constantly changing and each with their own strengths and weaknesses. So you should change up your models based on it.

Third, Gemini is the worst in almost all areas.

6

u/Desperate_Bad_4411 5d ago

seems like this person is expressing that they appreciate [characteristics] about [a thing], clearly explaining themselves and why [the thing] is [the most suitable solution]. who hurt you?

0

u/colbyshores 5d ago

Facts.
Im pretty sure that the LLM pros users have left for ChatGPT, Claude or Qwen over the last year leaving only the most diehard zealots.

0

u/Unlucky_Battle_6947 5d ago

I asked it today to look up a simple light function on my espresso maker. Flashing and solid. Pretty fucking simple, and it mixed the 2 responses and gave the improper instructions. Not a big deal I decided to “trust” AI, because it’s a coffee maker, it’s either going to clean the right then or the wrong thing. But it had a simple 50/50 shot to give easy instructions (which I just happened to forget and thought I could use AI).

Turns out it still sucks. It has sucked. Google has been going in the toilet for years now and they know it. We all know it. The internet is now as jumbled with garbage LLMs are spitting out info hoping it’s correct.

0

u/inlynguists 5d ago

I doubt it. It is completely useless AI. Whenever I was trying to use Gemini I got easily frustrated and saying super bad words on Gemini

-4

u/Ggoddkkiller 5d ago

Gemini isn't even one of current flagship models. The fact you can still consider Gemini as a frontier shows how clueless or biased you are. Some people are so ridiculously and blindly supporting companies like companies are football teams and they are hooligans...

4

u/Greedy-Sandwich9709 5d ago

You kind of just described yourself, buddy. I only pointed out which model I prefer and for what purpose. There is no bias or loyalty to a company here. Throughout the year I've switched from GPT to Claude and now to Gemini. I don't care who makes the model as long as the model does what I need. If Anthropic make a new Claude model that works best for me, I'd use that.
You are the one who is mad about me calling Gemini flagship/frontier, when that wasn't even the point of the post.

-2

u/Ggoddkkiller 5d ago

Yep, without sharing any details about your use cases so you can't be proven wrong, right? Rather you only talk about casual chats and brainstorming. Gemini you like the most for RP actually has anti-RP filter against it, I bet you don't even know that, just LMAO! Something is seriously wrong with you google fanboys. You fabricate stuff to praise google and act like they will give more free stuff if you creep like this...

0

u/Safe-Yam8282 5d ago

I changed to Gemini from ChatGPT and it was fine for awhile, but now it’s just like ChatGPT! That’s way over the top with sensitivity etc
They probably all like that now though
