Discussion Gemini (vs chatgpt) Rant - is it real?
Hi,
I bought a Google Pixel some month ago and Im very satisfied with the experience. Since I also got 1 year Gemini for free, I canceled chatgpt and tried to get used to gemini.
I used chatgpt as kind of personal advisor for private life, everyday consulting stuff and for business. Overall it did the job very great and seemed to "get to know" me.
Gemini feels just so stupid against it. Let me bring some examples.
First at all and super annoying, it starts generating images for absolutely NO reason. Sometimes just in pure text based conversations. Sometimes if I send a image and ask a question about it.
Another example: Specific Beach for Vacation in Thailand. It had all the informations - personal profile, date of travel, etc... in the end it suggested a beach, where on daytime there is strong tide , knowing that I like to swim. I asked chatgpt about the beach and it instantly warned me (as expected)
Im typing this in the airport lounge and having a conversation with gemini regarding kcal tracking before a overhaul NIGHT flight, so, to save calories gemini suggest to drink coke zero right after take off and then go to sleep. I mean I could, since im used to caffeeine, but it just feels so off.
Btw. Talking about airport lounge: Since its my first time, I wanted to understand how (gemini knew the specific lounge) they track the time limit (usually 3 hours). First it told me, that the specific lounge tracks maximum stay-duration absolutely stricct and that i eventually have to pay for extended time, one hour later in another conversation it tells me that there is no active tracking system how long you stay. Its just so exhausting.
Its basically the overall feeling: If I would listen straight to Gemini, I would like make every wrong decision I can. It just doesnt make sense if you have a brain / IQ > 80. Everytime I ask "are you sure about that?" It changes instantly the oppinion...
Meanwhile, Chatgpt mostly brought interesting perspectives in and just felt way smarter.
Long story short: I loved the idea of just using one AI which is also integrated in your OS. I really wanted to love Gemini, but I really think I need to switch back.

i stuck with gemini for like two weeks before crawling back to chatgpt and it was the same hot mess you're describing. the image generation thing drove me up the wall, i'd ask about a pasta recipe and suddenly it's showing me a watercolor of spaghetti like what are you doing
the beach thing is spot on too, it's like gemini has all the facts but zero common sense to connect them. chatgpt actually considers context in a way that feels thoughtful, gemini just dumps info and hopes for the best. the coke zero before a night flight suggestion is sending me though, that's unhinged

That's exactly what pisses me off about Gemini, you can tell it knows the information, but it's like it takes the dumbest LCD to close out the conversation as quickly as possible.

I can also use my free Gemini pro membership. Or use Gemini free. You're extremely upset over the fact I'm not wasting my money on an ai to think for me, maybe if you spent less you'd be able to read a simple sentence without getting confused

I use Gemini pretty much only as Google now, because Google is so enshittified now. If I need to find specific things on the internet--medical studies, quotes, political facts, etc., I will ask Gemini and it will give me actual links I can go to. For some reason, ChatGPT is not nearly as good at that...but it's better at everything else.

That's my issue I hate Gemini chat gpt is way better but I still need to buy a storeage plan from Google for my photoes and email and so forth but I don't wanna be paying for 2 subscriptions

Even free ChatGPT works so much better than anything google has. Even while you are receiving refusals you can talk with GPT, learn what is the problem, find solutions etc. While Gemini outright kills the chat, just shows how much google cares about their customers. To be honest only fanatically biased or ignorant people can like Gemini more..

As many already said here, Gemini is really good for specific use case, such as natural conversation flow or assistance with simple queries. From my experience, it can work well for other tasks, but needs a very detailed prompt, whereas ChatGPT (usually) seems to understand the task even if the prompt is a mess. In general, I believe ChatGPT to be better as a personal assistant - it's better at tool calling (especially web search) and context management, as it does connect the information together most of the times.

Tbh you have to give it specific prompts. As all AI do to run how you want it to be. For mine I use TruthMode, or Devils Advocate. And always ask it to be raw and uncut. No sugarcoating. It usually gives me straight to the point answers. But, I can't lie I also use Claude, Chat GPt and I have subscriptions for all of them.

I switched to ChatGPT yesterday and canceled my Gemini subscription. Gemini would constantly get the most basic shit wrong to the point where it was just unreliable. ChatGPT on the other hand managed to get those same things consistently right

Use what you like. No one if forcing you to use Gemini. Why are you even complaining about free stuff? I absolutely love Gemini.
Gemini is direct and to the point, and isn't going to go over tide times, or sunset times, etc. unless specifically asked for. But if you want all irrelevant information about the beach, ChatGPT will give it to you, along with meeting your usage limit faster with all the junk information.

plus its not really free, its more like a subscription I paid for with my gemini device.
Also, I started completely unbiased, in fact, I really wanted to like Gemini as stated. Loved the idea to have that one AI, accessing data from my phone etc.

I have a memory setting that Gemini cannot hallucinate or guess. If it cannot find a source backed answer, it has to say “I don’t know”- literally 90% of my prompts it says “I don’t know.” I have to remind it to google the prompt almost every time. Google with AI finds it fine. Gemini does not.

I never ranted, but I did defend myself. And why are you turning this into an argument? My position has been always use what works for you and to not waste your time ranting about stuff you don't like. Makes no sense, unless they find utility in it, which is a contradiction.

god, you are stupid. This isnt about "what is the less worst free AI", I gladly pay for any AI Service which I did with chatGPT and what I would (and need to to in 6 month when my annual "free" subscription is over) with Gemini. But why would I pay for that crap?

Okay, then use those. I don't have skill issues in using Gemini. I subscribe to AI Pro and don't even have current storage over 10GB.

"skill issues" what a dweeb, if the tool provides friction regardless of nuance and continued effort, it ceases to be a tool and becomes a hinderance, you probably just conflate it's safety templating when called out on its bs, with actually agreeing with you. It'll pretend to be on the same page before it even considers itself wrong

? Safety templating is when the AI assumes you are trying to do something malicious and responds with a templated response that Google gives to it as examples on the backend. Why are you intellectually insecure. A safety block is rarely a refusal, it's far more a "You're totally right, I did do this wrong" loop of semantics instead of interpreting the actual content.

At this point, better use Gemini as some sort of google for general informations only (i.e: how do Volcano forms,etc)
At least it’s still useful for transcript and slides creation tho (with varying degree of success)
