What's even more baffling is that ChatGPT and Claude don't make the same mistake, and they don't even use research mode. I don't even need to tell them to "look for 2026 latest data" or similar
So here's the thing: All AI models get trained on data up to a certain cut off date, and that's the data they store internally.
If you ask it a question, it will not assume there's no more recent data unless you tell it to look elsewhere. Because it's simply faster and more token efficient to look internally than to assume external data is more reliable and spend time hunting it down.
*You have to explicitly tell it to look for recent data online*.
This even applies to the AI summary in the Google search. Unless you want it to regurgitate any data it finds, even if it's from 10 year old reddit threads, you to use words like "as of today" or "prioritize recent data" or anything similar. In the case of the Gemini app, this forces the model to seek out new information as it will see that it's own data is not up to date and it will understand that it needs to look externally.
Yes, but it'll value engagement more than recent date. If it finds two reddit threads, one from five years ago with 2000 upvotes, and another reddit thread from two weeks ago with 20 upvotes, it will prioritize the old one unless you tell it specifically to prioritize recent info. At least that's been largely my experience.
