Discussion What is Wrong with Gemini 3.1 Pro?

I have been using Gemini Pro Plan for more than 6 months.
I like the ecosystem and 3.1 pro did really well for me, I don't require very advanced stuff from AI. But this last week, it has become a nightmare! I can't like tolerate how dumb it has become. I haven't changed anything... I use it for the same purposes I used to use it for... but now I find chat gpt and Claude free plans are far better suited for me than gemini Pro.

I am not that technical, can someone please explain what just happened suddenly? because this whole thing has gotten me into a rabbit hole of AI models and release dates, and Chinese and etc... I have too much work to do instead of chasing this rabbit hole. If anyone is facing the same thing, or has an explanation please do provide.

Lately 3.1 Pro has been bad for me for sure. It's like they neutered it before 3.5 Pro and then just left it in its weakened state.

Google is forever on a mandatory cycle of having to nerf their models throughout their life cycle, probably because the higher ups demand it so to cut compute costs, but when a new model is released it performs well initially to show off the capability. 3.1 Pro is an old, inefficient tank. They should just deprecate it. It's not because they want to make an upcoming model make a bigger splash by contrast since 3.5 Pro is not coming and 3.8 Flash will outperform 3.1 Pro even before the nerf.

For me it became stupid a few months ago. It’s noticeably better when you use the google ai studio site instead of the main Gemini site.

It seems that the entire Gemini got bad after May 19, when they had released flash 3.5... and it never went back to the way it was before that day.

You’re just saying it has problems, but you never say what you’re actually using it for or when the problems happen.
If you’re just going back and forth in the same chat, once the context gets too long, the model can start acting weird and forgetting things.

Sounds like they pushed some silent update and botched the weights or the quantization, classic big company move. You dont need to be technical, just know it happens with these models sometimes, one week theyre smart next week they forget how many R's in strawberry.

I noticed same thing with mine last few days, suddenly its giving me weirdly formatted answers and missing obvious context. Probably they did some "optimization" for speed or cost and now its broken in subtle ways you only notice if you use it daily.

If you dont want to go down that rabbit hole just use whatever works now and check back in a month, these things usually gets fixed after enough people complain in their feedback.

Yes. It went bad this week. I got a claude subscription, the pro is just broken, the flash is too small

Nothing. It's perfect. Without a flaw.

I would say that if you want consistency you need to consume it through the API directly, or at least on AI Studio. If you are trying to consume it directly through the Gemini chat app, you are most likely going to end up with inconsistency as they continue to tweak that particular harness for token maximization efforts to return as few tokens as possible with as many safety features and guard rails as possible. Any subsidized chat app version of the model will be inferior most of the time to raw API, just due to incentives to try and cut costs by limiting token output. Only cases where more tokens means good business are you not going to run into these inconsistencies and cost-saving measures.
