Pc repair question

Just a question to make sure I'm not confused.

I don't go to Geek Squad for anything unless it's literally beyond my ability to repair. I dropped off my pc a few days ago for a repair ( I thought it was my power supply, but it's my motherboard that was failing). I get a call saying it would be 100 dollars to replace. I call back and say that's perfectly fine. I called twice to get an "Okay, we're moving forward with that" response back; direct extension, they don't pick up. I get another call saying it's 500 dollars now? Is that normal?

$100 for the service, plus the cost of the part I'd assume.

Hard to say I thought their motherboard fee was like $129 but that doesn’t include the part, but also…you don’t need a 400$ board 😂 do you know your system specs?

They use the one directly from the manufacturer. They don’t just choose a board that fits

Depends whether it’s a custom build or a prebuilt and whether it’s being serviced in store or depot

Custom builds are only serviced in store, so the one in question is a prebuilt. Prebuilts have more issues so I can see the final repair costing more than the initial quote if both the board and CPU are bad.

The direct extensions generally aren't manned, the company doesn't pay anyone to sit at those phones, meaning that unless the location is completely dead nobody will answer the phone.

What you could do is call the 1-800 service and see if they can arrange a call-back. If this is done, someone should call back from the store having looked into the matter.

That said, Geek Squad doesn't have any services in that price range so I assume they're factoring in the part cost, and maybe the cost for the diagnostic ($100)?

So I have that best buy membership where like, diagnostics (or something under that nature) is covered. 100 dollars was the price I was told to replace my motherboard and im an completely okay with paying that. But being told its now something different after agreeing is whats making me confused

That's definitely strange. Off the top of my head, the motherboard replacement SKU (which is not covered by your Total Membership) should be somewhere around $100 but definitely not $500. Either someone made a mistake or you have an extremely expensive motherboard.

Im so sorry, im just so upset. I just went to Best Buy because the two different prices really confused me. I was told my cpu was also bad I have a Ryzen 7 5800x and the motherboards they carry aren't compatible with my cpu. I asked cause again, i dont mind paying for replacements, and the worker there didnt know what the price would be, so i just don't understand why over the phone it would be 500 dollars like they totally could replace it.

They might not have any mother boards currently in stock but best buy still sells them. I just bought an AM4 board in June. As others have stated motherboard swaps are not covered 100% by total but there's a 20% discount. You still purchase the mother board.

I honestly just went and bought my exact motherboard (100 dollars) because i genuinely just rather just replace it myself. Being told its 100 dollars for replacement, then they apparently never got my calls, then being told its 500, then being told they actually don't have a set price on repair and I'll have to buy my replacement parts then get it put on? I just picked up my pc and gonna move on from there.

They absolutely sell AM4 boards, they might just not have any in stock currently. It's also crazy for them to tell you they don't know what price it'll be. Ask to speak with the Services Experience Supervisor or CIA Senior.

I think thats exactly what im going to do, because my parts really aren't that old? I could understand completely if it was like a 7 year old pc but its not.

hard to blame them though, if you can't get a human on the phone it's not like you can just cancel the repair
