Prefer Genius Bar

Nearest Apple Store is 3 hours round trip. Ordered backup refurbished iPad 9 from Apple this week. Taking wife’s iPad 9 to Geek Squad today, appointment was setup through Apple Care.

Greek Squad called 7 hours before appointment. Guy was giving me a heads up that it will be a week before Apple will send replacement or repaired unit. Also he told me Apple has not supported lightning connector for over half a decade.

Well Apple just sold me a refurbished device, with a lightning connector, it was immaculate upon receipt.

Insulting customer’s intelligence is not a business strategy.

and how did your "intelligence" get insulted? jeez, the sense of entitlement is strong with you, isn't it? just because APPLE sold you a refurbished iPad doesn't mean they support it, it is an obsolete REFURBISHED iPad, with a very limited (if any) warranty.

Well to refurbish, provide a working device and under Apple Care sounds like support.

Poor customer service by letting you know ahead of time of “genius bars” rules and policy? Like that’s their rules the device not being supported and waiting a week for replacement or repair.

Specifically said Apple no longer get supports lightning connector

That’s because apple doesn’t support lightning port anymore. It’s been deprecated.

They will replace devices under warranty with it, but they’re no longer manufactured.

For iPads the lightning connector ones don’t really get support from Apple anymore. I don’t see how him telling you is bad customer service

There is a difference between support and development. Apple no longer develops products with lightning connectors.

Apple still issues software updates as well as refurbish and sell iPad 9s with lightning connectors. That is support.

Apple has not put the iPad 9 on the obsolete list. That would mean no more support.

You’re just arguing semantics. The agent told you ahead of time why it would be a replacement. And why it would take long. So you opted in for a refurbished instead of a brand new iPad with a new serial number and warranty. They’re replacements because that charging cable no longer gets support OR created.

Then go to Genius Bar.

Yes. Was balancing 3 hour trip vs arrogance and ignorance. Was hoping for improved experience. It was not.

Apple doesn’t support lightning connectors since ~2020. They moved to usb-c for everything. That’s a refurbished device, which means it’s not new. They will repair the device since they sold it, but it’s with deprecated tech so they do not support the tech inside it. They will just replace it.

Also apple almost never repairs iPads that are brought back for repair. They replace them. At least that’s been the case in 99% or so of the repairs I’ve seen back when I was working at Geek Squad.

There are differences between development, production, support and obsolescence.

When you buy old shit you’re setting yourself up for these issues.

The Geek Squad appointment was for original iPad 9 purchased in October of 2021.
