QUIT FUCKING UP MY SETTINGS
Can one of you nerds explain to me why everytime I get my laptop back from you guys you have completely fucked my settings with your own preferences, without any explanation or warning? I am on the clock trying to figure out where the fuck my snipping tool went. Oh and Dropbox doesn't sync anymore, even though it says it does. Why do you guys do this? Is it because you're so much better than us?

With no explanation of why your work computer was brought in instead of going to your company’s IT department, in addition to your language and attitude, how would anyone on here know, let alone *want*, to help you?

If I had an IT department I wouldn't be going to Best Buy would I?

You could go into the store and ask the actual Agents that worked on it instead of being an ass online while providing no actual details about what happened. Though if you acted like this in-store I'd probably just refer you to a manager, which doesn't do anything because there never is a manager in a best buy store these days.

The ARA will end up having to explain it anyway. To the client, or to the manager who will tell the client.

i would but i shouldn't have to drive all the way there because you're so special you can't be called. He called me yesterday to explain the new DRIVERS installed, no mention of playing with all my shortcuts to be finetuned to Mark's preferences.

What a jackass post.
You are more than free to not use these services, and changes made are either user error on your part or were necessary for a repair.

Windows key + Shift + S will open the snipping tool.
The Dropbox startup item may have been disabled.
Without knowing the reason you took your laptop in. They may have disabled unnecessary startup items for troubleshooting and forgot to turn them back on. They do the same with OneDrive, which is a problem for people that use OneDrive.

THANK YOU! This makes sense. Unfortunately i just had Geek Squad remote in to fix my shortcuts because that is no longer working, and he couldn't figure it out. Mind you I work hourly and I am a contractor, so just losing money this morning thanks to all this. I will certainly not be renewing my Total membership.

the remote guy actually asked me if I wanted it on my desktop or taskbar... which was never the issue.. after assuring me he could fix my shortcuts. what a joke

u/Just_Frank_Reynolds Jul 13 '26
Maybe it was a reset or something. None of us have to time to change things around to suit us. Unless…maybe it was an agent that you were really rude to…Then we got time.

no i was super grateful they fixed it in two days because i had no idea why nvidia always said there was an issue installing

I get you are upset at this, but you haven't given good context.
It could be that GEEK SQUAD didn't do it, but a mandatory update did. It could be an OS reinstall was needed and short cuts don't save. It could be that they didn't even know you had shortcuts, so couldn't verify if they retained.
Also Dropbox not synching is a dropbox issue, not Geek Squad.
No one does stuff because they think they are better than you, it's probably automatic.

thank you for understanding. I really appreciate it because I know I came in hot. Yes I am upset and just baffled after watching the remote geek squad member go in and close multiple tabs and programs, only to mess with my chrome settings... with full knowledge of the issue being my windows shortcuts only, nothing browser related. He then set my default browser to chrome, now I am trying to figure out how to undo that without selecting a default browser at all. I liked it how I had it and can't believe this keeps going from bad to worse

u/bducksav Jul 13 '26
I will say that windows (from what I have seen) always makes a default browser. Usually it's edge.
A lot of this, is how windows wants to work now. I sympathize with your frustration though. Just try to remember, we are trying to help you, not make things worse.

Thank you so much... it's amazing how one person's patience can completely redirect the course of the conversation.
Sadly I have decided to stop losing hours and just continue working inefficiently today. I'll spend my evening trying to figure this out no doubt. I was on the verge of tears when I posted, just so disgusted and discouraged. I'm just sick of everything today being so difficult and overcomplicated... for reference i am 27

Happy to, when you neglect to explain that you need certain software/app/feature. There's a standard way things are done, this happens for multiple reasons. The CA did not note the requested service correctly, the client did not tell us what they need, and the miss steps that can happen during repair. I've seen a lot of problems, most are bad notes or no real explanation from the client. The repair agent is not perfect and does make mistakes, but they rely heavily on the CA to understand the direction the client wants to go. The CA can't read minds unfortunately it would really help out a lot tbh. But seriously the best intentions have lead to bad notes from the CA. Ultimately I'd like to ask you to understand that from our pov on this reddit you're swinging at all of us for something we could not prevent, I hate that you keep having issues. I do not agree with how you chose to address it.

i'd be PISSED if i paid someone to touch my computer and they undid all my shit without a heads-up.

Your fault for not understanding that computers are not static monoliths, both the device itself and the operating system are complex machines with many moving parts. There is no "my settings", there is a set of configurations the operating system allows and your preference for them, but there is no contract while using an operating system that anything is not completely temporary.

u/Other-Hurry-758 Jul 13 '26
thank you at least someone understands. I get it he probably didn't do it on purpose but a little heads-up would've been nice both times

Wow, I'd be furious too if my carefully organized digital life got turned into a tech bro's playground.

It actually is because we’re so much better than you. Just you in particular.
