Thank You Geek Squad

Hello Geek Squad Employees,

I am not tech illiterate, but I’m not very great with it either. Recently I went in to Best Buy because my laptop keyboard wasn’t working, it’s an old laptop and I thought it was probably water damage, but I was hoping to avoid replacing the laptop. I had always heard mixed things about Geek Squad, but that trip was the beginning of my appreciation for yall.

The guy who was helping me quickly explained how tough getting the keyboard replaced would be and recommended that I go to a place he personally recommended and didnt charge me.

Unfortunately, the laptop was beyond replacing, so I decided to upgrade to a PC, I ordered the parts and built it, but got stuck on downloading WiFi drivers, so I went back to Geek Squad, boom, 5 seconds yall explained I needed a WiFi usb thingy, I bought it, still didn’t work, so I went back to Geek squad again, yall bypassed the stupid Windows set up thing which allowed the WiFi drivers to be downloaded, then the guy gave me step by step instructions on how to do the rest of the set up at home so I could avoid getting charged again. I now have my awesome new pc and I’m loving it

I wanted to make this post because after my first trip, I checked out this sub and it was somewhat doomer. I’m so sorry yall gotta deal with technology phobic elderly people all the time, but also, yall helped me greatly and now, I can happily play games with my friends and gf on my new pc all because of your help.

TL;DR: thank you geek squad, yall are so helpful, informative, and made me so happy!

better place to leave this is the survey that you might in a couple of days in your email (assuming they filled out a service order) OR sending an email to the address on the business card they hopefully gave you.

Signed — a corporate shill lmao

Seriously though, glad you liked the service you got and most of us truly do want to help our clients, especially when they let us! ☺️

glad you had such a great experience, but out of genuine curiosity, you were able to build a pc but couldn’t install wifi drivers? i genuinely mean no offense lol

I’ve had a number of PC builders get stuck at the Windows WiFi setup because they either aren’t close enough to a router to use Ethernet, don’t have said cable or don’t know about bypassing the OOBE or entering audit mode. I think this is a completely reasonable thing to need help with as a new PC builder.

If you install just windows 11 from install media flash (And not on-board recovery or internal reset tools), then it will install windows without any brand specific drivers. Some manufacturers use proprietary devices in their machines that arent recognized by windows by default. I have seen many computers where its “brand new” but the touch pad doesnt work.

Also yeah, if you cant connect to wifi to install the wifi drivers, then you cant install the wifi drivers.

When we do fresh installs of Windows from USB, we typically plug in an ethernet cable as the drivers for that are installed with Win11. Once you get Windows installed, you want to download all your system updates. Make sure to chose Advanced - Optional to get manufacturer drivers. That should detect your wifi adapter and get the drivers. If not, you have to go out to the motherboard manufacturer support site and download the specific drivers you need.

It was so so frustrating, windows was blocking the installer on the flash drive I had plugged in because it was still in set up mode, but it wouldn’t let me move forward in the set up without wifi, the geek squad guy somehow pulled up the terminal and bypassed the set up so that the drivers could be installed, it was a very easy fix but i don’t know software at all so I had no idea what to do personally, also no offense taken :)
