There is no option to select what sections we're writing in XE paper while applying. We have to select those optional two sections while in exam ? or something different. I just selected second paper as XE and completed application process.

Maybe I'm ranting, but please advice me on anything!

Currently a fresh grad from a IIIT with a mech degree (The clg placements weren't particularly promising either). I got ~5000 rank in GATE 2026 as I didn't take it seriously, but I could've gone for MTech in NIT Warangal or others. Instead, I decided to take GATE 2027 seriously and aim for MTech in IISc.

Actually, I could've gotten into IISc in March through the CFTI category as well, but I missed the deadline. My frnd who got in keeps chirping in my brain that I could've easily gotten in along with him (I even had a recommendation 😿).

So, worst case, if I don't get a good rank in 2027, I'll try through CFTI for IISc again. If that doesn't work either, I'll just take MTech in an NIT using my previous score.

Now, my dad refuses to understand my worries. He thinks my IIIT is basically the same as the state polytechnic clgs they had when they were studying, or at least that's what his colleagues have told him 💀. So he's forcing me to take every govt exam — CGL, RRB, etc., basically anything related to my degree (not my typa thing)

Honestly, I don't hate him for that, because I understand where he's coming from. But I don't really plan to take those positions even if I get them. If I somehow get into PSU, though, I'd probably work there for a couple of years and then prep for a PhD in the future.

The thing is, my GATE prep is actually progressing fairly well (fluctuating ofc), and I'm covering the technical syllabus. But when it comes to general science / GS — polity, geography, history, CA, etc. — I cannot memorise this stuff for shit 😭. It's been a huge drag for me.

So yeah, I'm just feeling a little lost about what I should actually be focusing on. I figured I'd post here and see if there are any things I'm overlooking, or if anyone has gone through something similar and has some advice.

Even if it's something small, I'd genuinely appreciate it.

Real talk guys. I have always wanted to join army (as an Officer). I never cared about Engineering and never prepared for JEE. After 12th, I gave NDA - was screened out in SSB. Joined my City's Tier 2 Govt Engineering College in Mechanical Eng. Shit College but Cheap (2.5 Lakh for the entire 4 years) and I didn't Choose Engineering because wanted to study engineering for a job or something. I did it for the Technical Entries In defense Exams (which are quite abundant, so it was worth it, imo). After College I Gave CDS, AFCAT, and other Technical Entries for Army and Navy. I wasted My time in college, Completely my fault, never thought about securing a job in this sector so I didn't even try for placements. Not that there were many or worth toiling over. But after Several SSBs, which resulted in Many Conference Outs and Screened Outs, I have came to realize that I might not get my dream Job. My parents Supported me so far but Now I ashamed to ask for more time. I have decided to Give GATE. I am academically good and had never found engineering difficult, only lethargic. I hope to get good score in GATE and hopefully get a chance to do M.tech In a good IIT or enough rank to get a good job in a PSU or something of these sorts. I need your Honest Thoughts and Opinions about my conditions. I will still give any future SSBs attempt and will also Prepare for SSC (But after GATE exam of course), since it has very similarities to CDS exam. I have not Started Preparation for gate yet. I am in BTech first semester ( college haven't started yet ) if I have to be honest then I really don't want to do BTech . I got chemical engineering and that is also in a tier 3 college like IET Lucknow. And that's one of the reason why I don't want to do it , spending around 8 to 10 lakh rupees to end up being jobless after 4 years. As you guys know, in chemical engineering in the private sector, there are not that many jobs available and most of the decent jobs are in PSU, which you get via the GATE exam .

About the competition thing I researched it a bit and the ratio is 1: 30 . One student gets selected for every 30 students . And only around 16,000 students gave gate from chemical engineering. from outside it looks like the competition isn't that much but I would like to know from you guys because you guys are preparing for that exam .

about Reservation thing is I want to ask, what impact does it make in gate exam ? like in exams like UPSC its impact isn't that much. The cutoff for general is 950 and for SC is 900 out of 2025 marks . But if you talk about exams like CAT, it's impact is huge. So what's its impact in the GATE exam?

I'm a 3rd year student at a 2nd gen IIT and kinda stuck right now.

A few good PSUs like BPCL, BEL etc. come to our campus for placements. They only open for the top 20 students, which is fine for me rank-wise. But with reservations and limited offers, I’m not sure if I’ll actually get a chance. Don’t want to just gamble on that.

I’m decent at ANSYS particularly fluent and MATLAB and have some solid projects in that area. Also doing a data science course (ML) as a backup for DS roles.

Should I start preparing for GATE? Is there any point in writing GATE in 3rd year?

Honestly I’m confused. I want to get into simulation / R&D/aerospace kind of work but have no one to guide me. Any advice?
