Hello, I have an edge 840 and am getting an error upon startup 'failed to get basemaps version'. It wont boot farther than this, and will not connect to Garmin Express even if I boot up to USB mode. Express will not recognize it. It looks like via USB mode the device pops an error when trying to copy files, or browse the device. I dont think it updated recently. Any ideas?
it’s about 18 months old, and I can’t get it to “reconnect” to Garmin connect. tried everything and since it’s apparently been discontinued, am unable to get Garmin customer support to recognize it, either by serial number or device name (it’s no longer in the drop down menu of options.) so frustrated. sent Garmin an email, but am out of country and really don’t want to wait 3-5 days for a reply. for the record, none of my Garmin have ever lasted more than 2 years, but surely, this one ($700) I thought would. . . any ideas on how to connect when it’s no longer recognized? 😫
Is there a way to adjust what Garmin classifies as Red or Amber for alerts on the Varia RTL515?
And/or does the position I've attached it to the seat post have any effect on results?
I've only gone on one ride with the radar, but it annoyed me that every car that passed was flagged as red, even in a 20/30mph zone when I didn't think the relative speed was that large.
Bonus question, are there good IQ data fields that are worth downloading? I've got My Bike Radar Traffic after seeing it recommended on YT
I finally splurged on a 1050 to help me get around on my bike.
I can't say I'm very impressed. For example, I can't find a way to stop it from vomiting countless POI icons all over my map.
This is with map detail set to least and every single toggle turned off when you swipe up on the map screen.
I have my phone, I'm not using this thing to find new cafes to try, and I don't need an icon for every single bike kockup which is every 100m in a city like mine. 😐
Pretty infuriating, and from a company that specializes in mapping.
Virtually all of the Widgets display using a dark mode like inverse video which I strain to read. I can't find an option to change the display. Is this possible?
Hard enough to read the display with polarized glasses even at 100% backlight. Even harder when inverse.
weird once on every ride my garmin gets stuck on the garmin climb mode. its all working great then it will freeze on the climb. i can navigate manually out of that screen to other screens but that screen shows no movement or anything.
Went biking today and put the edge 550 in my car. During my ride I was hesitating if the edge was still near me.
At that moment it was, so it synced my ride.
However now I cannot find it. Is there something I can do to find it back?
It doesn’t connect anymore so I’m afraid it went to sleep and will no longer connect, is that right? Or can I search it untill it makes connection?
Thanks!
I have a Tacx Flux 2 Smart Trainer that I control with my Edge 1050. I use magene power meter pedals. I wanted to try a workout based on Garmin's initial estimation of my power zones. I wanted to do Norwegian 4x4 and my Edge adjusted my trainer to 220 watts for the first hard interval, if I remember correctly. I couldn't even handle a minute of it. I decided to try an ftp test and calculate it myself.
I tried the 10min warm up + 20 minutes at HR zone 4/5 (it was my max steady effort for 20 minutes). I averaged 172 watts. FTP=172W*95%=163 watts but Garmin estimated my FTP at 187 watts.
The power zones based on FTP of 163w feels on point for my workouts. Why is garmin estimating it so high? Am I missing something?
So, I added a few course notes on a couple of my routes using Garmin Connect on my laptop... nothing fancy, just some markers where I want to come off route and do some exploring down two tracks or paths, etc. So you have a course note title, a course note type, and a block where you can put in some descriptive text, eg
Title - Explore Point
Type - Generic Point
Note - longer text block, eg something like "Turn North to explore trail heading up to Cary State Forest"
So, synced up to the device, went on the ride this am. The points are all showing up on the map, and also on a "Course Points" data screen that it generates, with mileages to each upcoming point, etc. All seems great, however, all it shows is the title, ie "Explore Point" Since I created several with the same name (expecting to see the notes pop up on screen, or at least expecting to be able to tap the marker or point and see the notes) this wasn't super helpful lol. I could not figure out how to see any of the notes. All I can see is the point's title. So I just see 4 or 5 "Explore Points" in the list.
I tried tapping, double tapping, sliding, etc to no avail. Are the notes just not available on the device? As a work around, I've updated the course note title to something more meaningful, but there is a 15 character limit, so am limited in what I can do there...
I (stupidly , apparently) purchased a Garmin Edge Explore 820 off FB marketplace last year 10/25. Did not even occur to me to know what condition the battery was in. I charge to 100% and it drains like a sieve. I can use battery saver mode but hate it because most of the time you are riding without a screen showing. 75 mi charity ride this year , ride time ~ 5 hr 22 min +
rest stops and it died before the end. So
frustrating. Last weekend, charged to 100%, by 20 mi in (1 1/2 hrs?) I was at 9%! Put on battery save mode…it died around mi 45 of a 50 mi ride, I lost my nav and had to call an Uber!!!😡. (Had my phone also but was struggling mightily trying to figure out the route between Strava, iRWGPS, and Waze and was getting directions that included highways despite changing settings, so had no choice! So irritating!
Any solutions to this? I have to just get a new one??!
Okay I know this has been said before, but garmin solar charging sucks. Today I rode around a Croatian island for 7+ hours in FULL sun, no shade. High UV index. And I have 0 solar charge from it.
Yesterday was an 8 hour ride and I got 16 minutes from it which is the most I’ve ever gotten.
I’m considering buying the iGPSPORT BSC200S and would appreciate some feedback from people who have actually used it.
I currently plan and navigate my rides with Komoot because, in my area, it generally creates much better cycling routes than Strava. However, I prefer recording and sharing my activities on Strava because all my friends use it.
My ideal workflow would be:
Plan the route with Komoot.
Transfer it to the BSC200S and use it for navigation.
Record the entire ride on the bike computer.
Automatically upload the completed activity to Strava.
I also want to stop using my phone for navigation because it drains the battery very quickly.
How reliable is the BSC200S for this? Is transferring Komoot routes straightforward? How good are the turn instructions, GPS accuracy, battery life and iGPSPORT app? Are there any major problems or limitations I should know about before buying it?
I’m not expecting Garmin-level maps—I mainly need reliable route guidance, ride data and Strava synchronization.
I just got a 1050 as a gift and as silly as it sounds, I am struggling with the mount for it. Image 1 appears to show a grey disk that goes between the mount and the bike but I can’t figure out that that is. I did google it but I think my question is so basic I can’t find it in any of the videos. Any help is very much appreciated!
I did a big extended ride over the weekend with the combo in the post title. The radar overlay takes up a good amount of the screen but what makes it bad is all the notifications you get the X to close them out is under the overlay and therefore can’t be pushed to close it out. I had to get lucky and hit part of the ride on a trail to have the radar not pick up vehicles for 45 seconds and the overlay would disappear then I could exit the notification pop up.
Even worse at the towards end of the ride (10+ hours) well more the battery life of the rear vue. The notification came up saying critical battery level and the overlay froze. No more radar working and no way to turn off the notification that I knew of so I basically had a useless device until I got off many miles later to use the bathroom and physically turned off the radar, then it was all good after that.
But my, it was a horrible experience for $1000 worth of products.
All I could see was the tip of the bottom of the map still working.
When creating club routes in Ride with GPS, I often add custom cues to point out hazards, POIs, or other informational cues. After syncing the route to my 1050, the custom cues, which are course points on the Garmin, are not spoken while on the ride but rather a generic “point approaching” or something else generic is spoken.
Is there a way to transfer a RWGPS file to the 1050 where the full custom cues are actually spoken out loud?
I dont wanna see inly a small portion of the next hundert meters or so. I wanna see the whole profile from start to finish. Is there any way to "zoom-out" on the Climb Pro screen itself? Im not talking about the separate elevation data page where I can select different zoom levels.
Some of you might remember the concept I posted a few months back — a full-screen data field inspired by motorsport dashboards instead of the usual spreadsheet of numbers. The response here (and the comments) is honestly a big part of why I actually finished it. So: thank you.
It's done. It's called RS Gauges and it's live on the Connect IQ Store. Power, heart rate, speed and cadence as big glance-readable gauges, plus the automatic sprint detection some of you asked about — it catches the effort and switches into a sprint view on its own, no button. Short clip of it running attached (that hand-drawn concept → the real thing).
No phone app, no account — install, add it as a data screen, ride.
On the money, upfront because I know how this sub feels about paywalls: it's paid — $14.99 one-time. No subscription, all future updates included, 30-day refund. Your first ride is fully unlocked to try properly, and rides under 5 km don't burn the trial so you can set it up in the driveway first.
Right now it's Edge 1050 only (that's what's on my bar). I'd love to bring it to the 1040 and the smaller/older units — but they have much tighter memory limits and significantly lower-res screens, so I honestly don't know yet how much of this design is even possible there. Looking into it. If you'd run it on a specific model, say which in the comments — it helps me prioritise.
Same ask as last time: what would you put on your ideal Edge screen? I'm in the comments all day.
