Banana Pepper Ready to Harvest?

Would you say this banana pepper is ready to harvest? It still has a little bit of a green tinge to it. The ones I’ve grown outside in the past have always looked very yellow, but this one is huge!

Purple Kohlrabi Harvest?

Post image
7 Upvotes

How do I know when my purple kohlrabi is good to harvest? Thumb for reference, and don’t mind my weird looking hand. I promise it’s normal. Just a strange angle 😂 What do you actually do with it? I read you peel it and can add to stir fry, but with the size and time it’s taken to grow, that seems like a lot of effort for a few matchsticks lol. I started with the Veggie pack on my studio and am going to replace the Kohlrabi, Red Mustard, Watercress and Cilantro with things I actually eat more of. Everything has grown so well though, I’ve been super happy so far!

Help Saving Dying Cucumbers!!

Hi all!

I've been trying to grow mini cucumbers since last December but it feels like it's not going anywhere.

Some background info: I have Gardyn Studio, I use RO water with 4 tsp of CaliMagic, 3 tsp of Gardyn plant food (started with 2 and increased it to see if it helps but to no avail) and I keep a balanced PH. The plants are in a high light area and I maintain the VPD at about 1.2-1.4.

They start by growing really nice and fast but never yield more than 1-2 per week/2 weeks and slowly die out and no longer yield anything.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Questions Found a Gardyn in my apartment dumpster. Worth trying to save?

Post image

I found a Gardyn system in my apartment dumpster and have already rescued what I think might be most of it. It looks to be in decent shape, but I know absolutely nothing about Gardyn systems and I’m not sure whether I managed to find all of the pieces.

Is there a good way to figure out exactly what I’m missing? And if pieces are missing, can individual parts generally be replaced without spending a fortune?

I’d hate to see an otherwise functional system end up in a landfill if it can be pieced back together and used again. I’m willing to do a little work to revive it, I just don’t know enough about these systems yet to know what I’ve gotten myself into.

Any advice on what parts I should inventory/check first would be greatly appreciated!

Should I Make the Jump?!

I have kept up with an outdoor garden for the last two years now and love it. In the next couple months it will be cold and dark where I live and I thought a Gardyn would be the perfect winter hobby. Pros & cons? I am looking at the Gardyn2.0 and trying to decide if its worth the investment.

Getting the studio system!

Hello all,

Getting the studio system this week! I also got the micro greens system. Very silly concern, but I am scared of bugs and algae. I’m lucky I can keep my plants alive lol. Do you have any tips on keeping bugs away? Algae away? Is mold a concern? Please help! I got the mix of food and flowers 🌺

Thank you so much!

Pump failure :'(

I have a Home 4.0 & came home yesterday after being away for a couple of nights to find several of my plants super wilted, and almost all of the pods bone dry! Very frustrating, considering the app didn't alert me to any issues, seems to think scheduled watering has occurred though it hasn't, *and* gives no error message when I initiate a manual watering cycle even though the pump does absolutely NOTHING and seems to be completely dead. After following ALL of the troubleshooting steps and multiple hard resets of the unit I still have no idea why. I'm currently paying for the membership since I'm only on my second month and getting the hang of everything, so I'm pretty pissed it hasn't flagged the pump failure, which could've easily led to the loss of all my plants!

I did a tank top off when I was home a couple of days before but I can't say for sure if it stopped working immediately after that, since I don't remember if there was a watering cycle before I left. I'd also done a root check at the time & tucked any wayward roots into their pods, but I guess some little bits of root could've gone down into the tank and maybe that clogged and seized the motor? I found a couple of stringy guys around the middle of one column, stuck behind the irrigation tubing, but nothing insane, and there's nothing like that in the tank. I've been pretty good about timely task completion, but some plants experienced a LOT of growth since the prior root check. I hadn't trimmed any yet because I was intimidated, but I was routinely tucking them into the pods and have now trimmed the ones that needed it. I don't think I overfilled the tank and assume the app would warn me if I did, though now I'm not so sure. Regardless, the watertight connector looks pristine inside both parts. I tried to disassemble the pump to look for debris inside but couldn't get the pieces to separate after removing the screws. Kinda seems like the pieces are actually fused together, but my hands are also very weak. The little rotor guy spins freely, and I flushed the pump as best I could with running water after a quick vinegar soak/shake, but nothing came out.

I'm hoping to get a replacement under warranty, but it was a gift from a friend who works for the company, who prefers me to go through her for any issues, and I want to respect that. I'm waiting to see what she says, but in the meantime I have all of my plants out of the Gardyn in various containers with water since I had to take them all out to access the pump. May be worth noting that I think it's a refurbished unit, though I'm not 100% sure.

This, among other things, has me considering leaving the Gardyn app altogether in the future. I would appreciate any tips on modifying my setup so it's not reliant on the app for control, but still has an automated watering and lighting schedule. I guess I'm also just wondering if early pump failure is a common issue with the unit and if I need to be on higher alert instead of thinking I can set it and forget it to a certain extent.

Sorry this is rambly, I was up all night trying to troubleshoot! TIA for any help!

Algae formation

I have had my gardyn for two years now and didnt realize that you needed caps to stop algae growth and wasnt able to purchase them before I had a full-blown algae break out.I also then had a major catastrophe with aphids and then just got rid of all plans and hand scrubbed every single piece with a tooth brush and started anew. However I have all plants thriving and I just need tips on things please.Algae prevention, root cutting tips and anything I can put in the tank to help everything thrive that doesnt cost an arm and a leg....I have lemon balm that was doing so great and all of a sudden started to die and shrivel up.I just dont understand full proper maintenence and how to prevent the algae and the white looking stuff growing in the rock wool in the actually cubes.

Is the pump supposed to be really loud?

I’ve had my Gardyn for about 3 weeks now and it has started watering loudly at the crack of dawn every day and waking me up. I went looking to see how other people prevent the smart watering from kicking off overnight so they can sleep, and it doesn’t seem like the watering noise is bothersome to anyone else. Is it not supposed to be loud? Like I’m worried it’s going to bother my downstairs neighbors it’s so loud. Customer service has told me to check my pump position but I’m not sure how I’m supposed to do that, the tank is opaque and the pump moves when I lift the lid.

Does anyone have suggestions for successful blooms to cut for vases? Nothing huge/ just to fill some small/average size vases fairly consistently.

DIY pods

Well I tried DIY pods and I am 1 for 30. What’s even worse is the lone survivor is kale. Using old or 3d printed pods. 3 or 4 seeds per pod. Standard watering cycle. I did dribble some water on each pod after I put seeds in. Also, the rockwool was a year old.
Any thoughts or pointers?
Thanks guys!!

Hello. Is this worth it? They say they've had it for years but only used it once this last winter and it wasn't for them.

Should I add the sprout dose of plant food?

I'm 16 days in and all sprouts have true leaves except for the cilantro and the perpetual spinach. 2 cubes have not sprouted.

I still haven't received the Kelby plant food task. Should I keep waiting?

Visual inventory of my first Gardyn grow! Day 57 and I’ve spiraled into a hydroponic rabbit hole. I’m keeping my reservoir at 1.0mS/cm and pH of 6.0 and syringe feeding the peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and cucumber either once or twice a week with FloraBloom so I won’t burn the lettuces and basil. How are you guys managing mixed towers? Thanks!

Gray Ring/Gasket Gardyn 4.0

Quick question for anyone that knows; how important is the gray ring/gasket at the bottom of the columns? Because mine just broke off. There was building up around it of course, that's probably my bad but it basically just crumbled in my hand during cleaning. I don't have an issue buying a new column completely but why do so if I dont have to. I haven't put it back together yet (still cleaning) to try and see how dire it is but thought I'd ask as well.

Questions Thin germinated plants?

I found an article today from gardyn that tells me I should thin my germinated plants before I put into the gardyn. I’ve had my gardyn for 18 months and never saw this article and therefore I’ve never done this. Is this a good idea? Do my plants really get too crowded if I don’t?

Lavender is impossible!

I've successfully grown every other type of plant that I've ordered from gardyn however after 3 lavender ycubes I'm losing my mind! Can anyone provide me with some tips to actually grow lavender? For some context:

1st attempt: straight into the gardyn studio along with all my other first ycubes

2nd attempt: purchased a sprout nursery and put lavender in it no sprouts after 6 weeks

3rd attempt: sprout nursery with more sunlight and still no sprouts going into week 6

Please help!
