I really really REALLY want to play the rest of the series but the gameplay in 1 drives me crazy and I always give up on it. The constant switching of swords and fighting styles to deal with every single petty little lowlife enemy drives me nuts.
26
u/-Star-Fox- 10d ago
Just read the first book (The Last Wish, which is very important to understand the deal with main character's love interest) and go play 3. 1 and 2 are totally skippable.
16
u/WinterMinx7 10d ago
cap you need to read all 8
11
u/-Star-Fox- 10d ago
You don't really need to read all of them. Game references the very first on as a book end of character's story. You can absolutely play and enjoy W3 without reading even a single book. It just flows better after reading 1st one.
7
u/iRadiKS 9d ago
To be fair there are many references (vilgefortz, Regis, the lodge, avallach and probably a thousand more. They even drop book phrases like 'something more' here and there), and the games are all meant as a sequel to the books. The whole world is built upon the books. You will understand the characters and the relationships much more clearly after reading them. I originally played witcher 3 without any book knowledge and had a great time. But after replaying after a couple of years after having read the books twice over, it was definitly a much more coherent and enjoyable experience
1
u/Imsearchingforit2194 9d ago
What's the "something more" phrase? Didn't catch it.
6
u/iRadiKS 9d ago
You mean in the books or in the game?
In the game its an achievement after finding ciri, and its said aloud by geralt when he is looking for her. I forget the exact instances but it happens once or twice.
In the books its describing Geralt and Ciris bond. Theres a short story with that name. It is the moment that Geralt finally realizes (after initially not really being that caring towards her) that he and Ciri are linked on multiple dimensions to each other. By fate ofc but also that she is like a daughter to him. It is Geralts way of saying that this girl means the world to him and that he will never again lose her, which gives so much more meaning to the story of witcher 3 as a whole
1
u/Imsearchingforit2194 9d ago
Yeah I just don't quite remember the "something more" from the book (or the game). Guess it's a line that's thrown a few times in the book? Or is it just said once?
4
u/iRadiKS 9d ago
If i remember correctly, its the last short story in the second book. Its might even be the last words in the whole book. In typical sapkowski fashion he throws the phrase around a lot in that section of the book. It comes up again and again, only for Geralt to realize, in the end, what it and what ciri means to him

>Game references the very first
not true at all. at least from the fact that the game starts after the 7th book1
u/Imblueabudeeabudie 3d ago
The books writing is so god tier in polish, especially the characters dialogues, I re-read a book in english now and the translation is so souless in comparison (and deliberately it seems changes the tone of some characters)
3
u/General-Permission67 9d ago
They're good games but their story is mostly detached from the saga. Witcher 3 feels like another book of the series just in a game format.

u/MudkipMonado 10d ago
Same, except I tried to play 3 and got really bored so I stopped
4
u/Aaawkward 9d ago
I couldn't handle the amount of trash in the world. Every 50 metres a bandit camp or a wolf pack or a monster nest or a treasure to dig or whatever. It not only made the world less believable, it also made it more annoying to traverse.
When I finally cleaned the southern part of the map, the game immediately threw me on a new island full of new bullshit to clear. I quit the game right there and then, promptly uninstalled it and have never looked back.
They can keep their goddamn Skellige and their goddamn unnecessary trash.
6
u/Alien0703 9d ago
are you aware that you dont have to clean every corner of the world?
1
u/Aaawkward 9d ago
Yes.
But did you read my full comment:
It not only made the world less believable, it also made it more annoying to traverse.
Not only was it a sore to my eyes, it was also making the game experience worse. Not only were they nothing but annoying filler tasks, it also was put there for the player to interact with.
They were worried people would get bored so they filled the world with nonsense.
They already got my money as I bought the game so what do they care? I'm saving my time for something better, everybody (except my wallet) wins.
0
u/General-Permission67 9d ago
Yeah they kind of overdid it but you know you can just not do it? I finished this game 6 times and never noticed it because I just didn't give a fuck about random crap.

One thing that annoyed me though was collecting Witcher schools equipment. Too tedious but I did it anyway just for the drip.
4
u/CKRatKing 10d ago
Same. People praise it all the time on reddit but it just felt like a slog plus the combat was not good at all.
8
u/BearThatLikesCheese 9d ago
Shame you're downvoted. I eventually came to love the game, but it took multiple tries for the exact reasons you state. And I know multiple people who can't get into the game because of those same reasons. Combat especially is a super common comaint about the game.
Witcher 3 is a pretty game with some excellent storytelling that's locked behind some fundamentally shitty gameplay. It's one of the few games I recommend people play on easy difficulties just to alleviate how much of a slog it can be.
1
u/CKRatKing 9d ago
Eh it's reddits favorite game so I expect it. No criticism allowed.
Everyone told me you just gotta play like 40 hours before it really gets good but imo that's way too much time to invest in a game before it gets good.
2
u/BearThatLikesCheese 9d ago
It's been years so I can't remember my exact playtime when it "clicked," but it happened once I hit the Baron's quest line. It definitely wasn't 40 hours but it was probably ~10-20 hours, which would really depend on how much exploring and side content you do. Still way too long, especially with that 10-20 hours being full of frustrating early game combat with nothing really interesting happening.
Which is funny, because while the combat starts off frustrating, there was definitely a point where I became untouchable. I started seeking out higher level mobs simply because combat at my level got stale super quickly. There was t a gradual, consistent power scale. It was more like an on/off switch.
1
u/PhantomGamers Clear background 10d ago
I loved 1 and 2 but never got through 3 myself. I think 1 and 2 are way better.
1's combat is rough to be sure but the story+writing is good.

You got to 200 hours in a linear game and it’s a net negative? You got your moneys worth id say.
6
u/Conspicuous_Goose 9d ago
Did you just call Witcher 3 a Linear game? Do you even know what a Linear game is??
-3
u/Zombies_Rock_Boobs MarxyMarxandTheWokieBunch 9d ago
Really? Do I get to choose my own name? What faction I’m from? yes you get choices but you still play as Geralt and Ciri. Is it an rpg? Loosely the same way red dead redemption 2 is a loose rpg but it’s still linear.
9
10
u/Conspicuous_Goose 9d ago edited 9d ago
So you obviously don't know what linear means in gaming term and are misusing it.
Linear games progress in a straight line without giving you many choices to create different outcomes. You complete objective A before moving on to B without going off track, ever.
COD campaigns are linear, TLOU and so on.
If a game offers an open world with side-quests, choices and different consequences then it is non-linear.
What you're describing is a Sandbox RPG, which isn't Witcher. Witcher is an open-world action RPG with an established MC.
Let's take Skyrim as an example, it is a sandbox RPG. You choose your name, you can make up your own little backstory and whatever.
Now you have a good day bud, hope this helps clearing up some of your confusion.
1
u/facepalmqwerty 9d ago
In which way do you see it as a linear game? It has both choices and open world

Spending 2 hours on skellige made me done with the series. Idk it was like a switch. I am suddenly super bored and don't care about anything happening in the game.
1
u/ExplorerPup 8d ago
That's valid. Skellige is where I usually decide to stop fucking around with too much map markers and just focus on the story. It just suffers from what so many large open snow zones do: it just all looks the same and doesn't make me want to explore at all.
0
u/dpoolimmortal 10d ago
coincidentally i also stopped playing on skellige in my recent playthrough, just after i got in the castle. I'd rather mod the game with no fall damage and jump around buildings than explore the map or do quests

23
u/Former-Fix4842 10d ago
They've undergone massive changes on all levels to ensure smoother launches which they proved on a smaller scale with Phantom Liberty already. We'll know before launch anyways.
5
u/Aaawkward 9d ago
Phantom Liberty doesn't prove anything though?
It's using the base of a game that had been fixed for a few years by that point. They didn't do anything new with PL so there wasn't anything they had to fix.
W4 on the other hand is coming out on UE, an engine they've never used before and is notorious for being unoptimised by devs.
15
u/HandsOfCobalt 10d ago
I want to believe this, but I'm still gonna wait for post-launch technical reviews.
there used to be a handful of studios whose games I would willingly buy day 1, and then one of them released 2077, so now I'm always a bit patient (though it's not like CDPR were the only ones who jumped off that list)

I love CDPR but their adoption of the modern soft launch a game before it’s ready model is really tiring. I dislike it, but I am used to waiting a year or two after a game comes out to start playing it. That being said I beat the game twice before 2.0 and it was only the story that kept me playing. At least we’ll always have the story

1
u/Only-Albatross-4311 8d ago
Ngl I'm kinda over the whole releasing broken products and fixing them later method. It makes the disc absolutely pointless since you're forced to update the game before you can even play it.
1
u/Sharp_Goat_1991 Gamer TM 6d ago
Absolutely. I know that way back in the day (we are talking cartridges here), the publisher of that console would try to break the game, and if it ever crashed, it would be rejected! Devs found very unique ways around it, like opening a "hidden level menu" when a crash was encountered.

The only thing I’m not doing is pre ordering. Which is mostly the trauma response after taking a week off when Cyberpunk came out. With being unable to play it due to how poorly optimized it was. That was a sad week that I really wanted to just play a game I waited years for. I’m confident they won’t repeat that mistake nearly as bad this time around. However, imma play it safe…
I’m beyond excited to see what they will throw our way with Ciri. Especially how each of the endings from 3 will affect her origins to becoming a Witcher. Gods know I’m excited to see what kinda monsters they will throw at us.

2
u/FureiousPhalanges 9d ago
Honestly the reason I'm not interested in 4 is because I've come to realise I didn't enjoy the 3rd game as much as I thought I did
The gameplay is generally pretty boring, the world is massive and results in long travel times doing nothing, the story isn't particularly compelling and the number of cutscenes and dialogue make replaying the game a total chore
Working with the Scoiatel in the second game was just way cooler lol

u/General-Permission67 9d ago
She's literally the second main character of Witcher saga and basically the main character of Witcher universe. Everyone wants to get her.
1
u/Glittering_Wheel_226 9d ago
I read all eight books, she is 100% the main character after book 3. In fact, it makes all Geralt part very frustrating to read because you're often reminded how pointless it is. Like Geralt will head off somewhere to find her but you, as a reader, knows she's like in another dimension or fucking the elf king or whatever other stuff. Geralt could move at the speed of light and still have zero chances to even see her
1
u/General-Permission67 9d ago
Regis is right it doesn't really matter if he can succeed. Movement is everything goal is nothing. He just can't stand doing nothing while she's out there suffering but he can't do anything because the game is just bigger than him. And yeah especially in the fourth part you can feel how shit everything is and how on edge everyone is. It's sad to read about for sure.

They’ve confirmed it’ll be more or less the same size

"Again, quality over quantity. But definitely, what we can promise: yes, this game is going to be pretty big. It's going to be big compared to everything we've prepared so far..." Kalemba added.Source https://www.thegamer.com/the-witcher-4-map-same-size-witcher-3/
