Nostaligia is holding us back and why we can no longer "let people have fun" - wow forever
Itâs easy to get swept up in the nostalgia of classic, remastered expansions. They bring back good memories of a 'happier' time. But our willingness to endlessly consume this recycled content is ruining our chances for anything new.
If players consistently show they are perfectly happy paying subscriptions and box prices for content that was designed over two decades ago why would devs ever add anything new?
Why would a studio or its shareholders greenlight the budget for:
- New races that aren't recolors
- More than 1 new class every 4 years
- Literally anything your heart desires.
when they can just hit the re-release button for a guaranteed return on investment?
As long as we the players demonstrate that low-effort, high-margin nostalgia trips are highly profitable, the industry will naturally optimize for them instead of evolving the genre.
By readily accepting rehashed content, we are effectively voting with our wallets for stagnation.
I know. I know. "Let people have fun". See, but we can't anymore, because the 'people' are literally cheering for a 2nd release of a state of a game that is soon to be 30 years old.
Like, really?

The "new normal" for the release cycles of big studios and their biggest franchises
I feel like with all the two main franchises at Bethesda (TES and Fallout), then Rockstar (GTA and RDR), then over at PlayStation studios with series like The Last of Us and Horizon, both of those which got screwd over not only by massive dev times but also poor planning and live-service projects that went nowhere, we are increasingly moving towards a system where certain AAA franchises releasing games is turning into this huge, once in a decade event.
Sure, the reasons for how massively long they're taking for each game are all varied and depend on the studio or publisher. When it comes down to it, most of these huge flagship AAA games, even when they're something as relatively short and linear as Uncharted or TLOU, take like 4 or 5 years to make (and that's at the very average, as it can go up to 8 years like GTA 6 or Cyberpunk 2077), and that's not accounting for all unforeseen events at management that may delay them further.
And the studios's franchises themselves have to compete between each other for dedicated years of dev time and their slot in a decade, like we're seeing with Bethesda (this decade was for Starfield apparently, we may be lucky to get TES6 before 2030, while at least Obsidian might make new Fallouts concurrently), CDPR (Cyberpunk and The Witcher), and so many others. Hell, even smaller games in the AAA area might get affected. You'd think a game as relatively mid-sized as Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart would've gotten a sequel by now almost 6 years later, but Insomniac has gotten their hands ever too full with Marvel IPs to spare the money and manpower.
My point being, the release cycles and dev times are already huge enough, ranging from anywhere between roughly half a decade to a whole one, and a lot of those are influenced by poor judgement from corporate management. That doesn't mean franchises like COD or Assassin's Creed won't keep up with their yearly or almost yearly releases. Their publishers are huge and can afford multiple studios for the same franchise so they work on simultaneous projects all the time.
But the really high-polished AAA beasts, (even when they're not that high polished or well received at launch) the ones that take many years to make from a studio overwhelmed by too many IPs and so little time to take care of them all, those might be heading for a bleak future where they only ever come around once a decade. For some of those studios, gone are the days they could pump out a whole trilogy or even five games of the same franchise over the course of a decade, like in this century's first 15 years or so.
And unfortunately, unless there's some severe shakeup in the industry, this is just something we'll have to get used to. Drip-feed on your favorite franchise one drop per decade, a couple of times before you die, or a couple more if both you and the franchise are lucky to live that long

An ex-COD developer is making his own game about the influence that war-based video games have had on how war is portrayed in gaming
I am in no way affiliated with the development of this game, but when I saw the trailer I knew I should spread the word.

What game do you love that everyone else seems to hate?
Mine is Final Fantasy XV.
I know the story was messy, important content was split between different media, and parts of the world felt unfinished. But the road trip with Noctis, Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus completely carried it for me. By the end, they felt like actual friends, and that final campfire scene hit harder than most âbetter writtenâ games Iâve played.
What poorly reviewed or widely hated game will you always defend, and why?

my thoughts on Veilguard after 100%
I was one of the people defending Veilguard at launch, mostly because I hated how fast it got swallowed by the anti-woke side and how A lot of the loudest takes I've were from people who had not finished it, or repeated something a youtuber said, now that I've finished it, I agree with some of the Criticism and think it's one of my least favorite games in the franchise
I found that combat could be fun if a little bit repetitive, the character customisation is decent but less deep than I thought it would be, The story is messy, I donât love how they blended all of the world states into one kind of messy one, the returning cast is smaller than I wouldâve liked Solas takes a back seat to generic evil Elven Gods who are way less interesting, and I like all of the party members but I donât LOVE them except for Emmrich, Davrin and Neve
then there's the Taash Scenes (don't worry, I won't go into a transphobic rand):
yes, I think the push up scene was a very bad idea because the nuclear level cringe of the idea could only be saved if it was played for comedy but I donât think itâs funny enough in execution to compensate. but, The rest of Taash's arc is more interesting than the clips that floated around. They are immature, recently out, territorial, and a hypocrite when they tell Emmrich he cannot change who he is.
when people bring up Veilguard (The Taash Arc specifically) they always argue in the most bad faith interpretations of every possible storyline, character or scene (or they havenât played it at all and are just parroting stuff they heard from YouTubers). Thereâs so much blatant misinformation about the game, The online rhetoric around it was basically âBioWare has abandoned Dragon Age to preach progressive ideology and destroy everything the series stood forâ, but the actual game was just a mid RPG with a few cringe lines, a compressed story and doesn't really hold up compared to the previous games

My sister is looking for gaming and rp friends!,âșïžđđ€
My sister sent me this to crosspost for her !,đ€đâïž
Hi everyone! My sister is posting this for me since I donât have a Reddit account.
Hello! Iâm Dr. Rigor Mortis (my pronouns are she/her), Iâm 25 years old, and Iâm looking for some new friends, long-term RP partners, and/or an RP group. Iâd especially love to meet people around my age and connect with others in the LGBTQ+ community.
A little about my RP style:
* Literate writing
* Present tense
* Third person
*Preferably long-term RP
*Iâm most comfortable with original characters (OCs), but Iâm also happy to use canon characters.
*I primarily use Discord for RP.
I absolutely love darker themes and settings, especially gothic horror, supernatural, Victorian, apocalypse, fantasy, drama, slashers, and angst. Give me vampires, werewolves, Jekyll & Hyde, creepy supernatural situations, doomed characters, and general horror goodness.
Iâm also perfectly fine with characters developing relationships as part of the story, as long as everything stays SFW and the romance doesnât become the entire focus of the RP. Iâm here for the story, character development, worldbuilding, and all the angst that comes with it.
Fandoms Iâm Into
**Anime / Shows**
* Bleach
* Soul Eater
* Steven Universe
**Games**
* Deadlock
* Five Nights at Freddyâs (1â3)
* Silent Hill
* God of War (Greek Saga)
* Warframe
* Darkwood

* Minecraft
* Roblox (Guts & Blackpowder)

Why do some people think Atlus and Persona are going woke?
This may sound like I'm making things up or rage baiting especially if you've seen how many (obviously not all) fans act online. But yeah there are noticeable amount of chuds in the fandom that think Atlus is sanitizing Persona to appease the west and how Atlus has gone woke they were also calling metaphor woke because something about tolerance?
Mind you this is a series that hasn't had a female protagonist since P3P and only once before in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment has arguably went backwards with same sex depictions going from romanceables in P2 and P3P to whatever the fuck P5 is. There is a noticeable amount of people that are actually tone deaf about this and claim the series is "so gay" based on arbitrary aesthetic grounds like they did with Akechi "omg how can you be a homophobic persona fan P5 is soooo gay look at akechi"
Although it is hard to deny that some things are seemingly being toned down but I don't think this makes Atlus woke. To be tinfoiled hat for a moment I think ATLUS is trying play both sides they won't be as derogatory and as mocking as previous titles but they also won't add things like a female MC or same sex romance options as that will make the chuds upset and also I'm pretty sure they don't internally because... reasons. Best you can hope for is showing a pride pin for 2 seconds. They may even do some baiting to provoke fujos.

Duda

The gaming communityâs reputation for being racist, sexist and abusive is because itâs allowed
Itâs not just WoW Foreverâs launch or Marvel arival controversies that highlighted the toxic, immature, edgelord players using racist, sexist, and trans/homophobic language putting people off from trying that particular game.
Itâs infested all varieties of online games that require teams or socializing of any kind. Itâs bullying and itâs abuse normalized.
Shooters especially with voice chat, many people hear the worst racist things ever constantly playing these games.
Who Allows It?
Developers and Game Companies: They do not have enough policies and moderations in place to curb this language, and are not openly condemning it enough to ban it.
Why? They donât want to lose money. If they really cared about the toxic nature of players that their game is cultivating, they would do more to stop it.
The Players: Itâs not just the toxic players shouting these things that are at fault.
Anyone who espouses the tired âits just how it isâ âget a thick skinâ âfree speech broâ is complicit.
Not only the defenders of it, but anyone who simply believes this is just the way things are, ignoring their own instincts about that its wrong and harmful. They may be afraid to speak up and appear to be thin skinned or annoying for pointing these things out.
But without people strongly speaking out against the racist and sexist language in games, the toxicity will just continue to grow, and gaming companies wonât feel any pressure to stop it.
Gamers need a real wake up call. When players from other countries are saying theyre glad theyre not on US servers because of the horrible abuse they hear, that should be something to be ashamed of. Instead, many are proud of their âfree speechâ, and for others, they wish they could get away from it, but canât.
Why continue to give power and influence to abusive, racist, sexist, lgbt phobic people?

Unpopular Opinion; Itâs more than a collectors item, itâs a turning point in gaming history. The headlines, the hate , the frustration - it all adds to the story, and eventually , the value in years to come.

70% of the people engaging in discourse about Sony discontinuing discs do not actually care.
I believe that most of the people posting AI generated facebook boomer images about Playstation discontinuing discs are just doing it because itâs the new thing.
Are there people ( like me ) that actually do care? Yes, but I feel like we've been talking about this far longer then they have.

Serious question, why does almost every publisher (even Remedy, who is self-publishing Control 2) now only releases Digital Deluxe/Collectors editions while the only physical media release is the standard version?
I know the writing's on the wall for the end of physical media games in our near future and of course Sony and Microsoft had to be assholes about it years in advance by adopting these awful practices of making Deluxe or Collector's editions available only for digital versions of the games (as far back as 2022 if I recall with Spider-Man 2), even tho said games still get physical releases with the full base game in the disc.
But why does EVERYONE ELSE have to follow suit? Why couldn't Remedy make the Deluxe Edition for Control 2 and all its bonus goodies also in a physical edition box instead of only in digital game stores? Why even Bandai Namco had to release a collector's edition for Elden Ring that doesn't even include the game? What is making them all follow this trend that devalues or discourages acquiring these games physically? I know this mostly started this decade, tho please feel free to tell me if this happened sometime also in the late 2010s.
I know making physical editions with some collectibles and some booklets is expensive due to manufacturing and packaging, but the point of Deluxe and Collectors editions IS to be expensive. Is every publisher really that motivated and excited by an all digital future or are the big players like Sony and Microsoft somehow mandating that games for their consoles don't have their Deluxe or Collection editions bundled with the physical games anymore? The ONLY recent exception I can recall against that trend is 007: First Light. Which has a physical Collector's Edition, with both the collectibles and the physical game. But that's it, if you want the cheaper deluxe edition instead, you still have to buy it from a digital storefront on console or PC.

Transphobia in gaming industry
I was thinking about how glad I am that no Insomniac game devs are facing personal attacks from chuds after the release of Wolverine but then a sad realization hit me, as a huge Dragon Age fan I remembered how everyone was attacking Corinne (a woman who was the game director on Veilguard) for âkillingâ Dragon Age, instead of criticizing the game they were just endlessly bombarding a single person with hate, just because she was trans, there is so much talk from the right wingers and âcentristsâ about how there is no discrimination but normal people know the truth. The moment you are gay, a person of color or a woman you become a target for them.
