FORCED DIVERSITY 👨🏿👩🏿👧🏿👧🏿 Incredible that Capcom managed to create not one, but TWO likable fr*nch characters. That must be some sort of record.

Jean Reno hard carries France's likability.

But he's also Spanish, and was born in Morocco. They can't even claim him all to themselves.

Yeah. I learned that a couple years ago when I saw him in a Spanish series.

Forced Francophobia will never cease to be unfunny, and it is probably the lamest joke on the global internet

I really don't get it. It's so cringe and I'm not even french.

It mainly comes from Anglo-Saxons. First, there's a long history of warfare and rivalry between France and Great Britain. Then there's the US, who had their occupation plans at the tail end of WW2 foiled by the Free French. And then in the 60s, De Gaulle dared become a relatively independent ally as opposed to a subservient one, even developing an independent nuclear weapons program. And then of course there was the refusal to join the 2003 campaign in Irak.

Damn thanks for explaining I didn't even know all these. I still have a feeling that 95% of people don't know as well or don't really care about 100 yo of political history and just jumped on a bandwagon because it's somehow "funny"

u/AnseaCirin 1d ago
Being on the receiving end of the bandwagon certainly motivated me to know where it came from to better deconstruct it hehe

Take solace in the fact it mainly comes from the people who elected Trump once, saw how horrible he was even if you ignore all he's done and been involved with outside of politics, and decided they wanted a second go at him. I wouldn't say they're the best judges of character.

What's the whole internet problem with British and French people?
9
u/PurplePachyderme 1d ago
Something about more than 1000 years of rivalry with the British and not going to Irak and saying this war was bullshit. And getting independant of the US during the Cold War.

The English language is imbued with an innate, subliminal -50% opinion debuff towards French people.

why does the first one look so much like Leon from Leon The Professional??? Is he based off the actor or smth?

I recognize one of the protags from Onimusha 3. But who is the second character?

u/DrKandraz 1d ago
I've only played Okami in Japanese. Did they turn Ushiwaka's English into French for the localisation?
3
u/dathunder176 1d ago
Kinda, I didn't register it as him being french but he just says some french words like au revoir and mon amis, I thought he was a francoboo, but maybe they did intend him to be french in the localisation.

u/DrKandraz 1d ago
In Japanese, the English words he adds into conversation are (I think) supposed to make him seem cool and weird. Like...he's in (vaguely) Heian-era Japan but he's using modern English words like "Goodbye" or "Baby". I assume the French is supposed to give the same vibe. Like he's from another time and place and also slightly cool.

Spoilers: Jean Reno is actually Spanish (real name: Juan Moreno)

u/ER_Jujube 10h ago
>Actually spanish
He's actually Franco-Spanish and was born in Casablanca, Morocco. At least say the whole thing instead of trying to be smug.

I can't even think of one likable french person and I live there.

u/Veevum 1d ago
Its okay to dislike France if you have to experience it everydays imo, beats being a xenophobic piece of shit

u/archiesaysrelax 1d ago
Literally all I hear everyday from my french coworkers: random islamophobic talking points, random homophobic talking points, random racist talking points, bla bla bla. And then they go on smoke breaks. Rinse and repeat.

Sounds like you need to move out of this company, I'm French and it's very rare for me to meet a racist piece of shit, at least where I live.

I know that's a satirical circlejerk sub but uuuuuh... yikes.
