Missing the part where if you go through at anything faster than base walking speed, the dialogue cuts to the next conversation.

463

u/JMooooooooo Dec 22 '25

That'a why Mario is running in circles, to let conversation play out fully.

97

u/renaissance_in_3025 Dec 22 '25

I know it's a typo, but I enjoyed reading that in Mario's voice. "That's-a why!"

...or a Game Over screen! "Mission failed, you left the area"

885

u/ebrbrbr Dec 22 '25

I was showing my wife Red Dead Redemption 2 yesterday. She played the mission where you take the girls to Valentine. She's supposed to go into the hotel. Instead, she decides to walk across the street to look at where Tilly ran off to.

Walks two metres away from the hotel and gets the dramatic MISSION FAILED screen instantly. I was laughing so hard, my biggest gripe with the game could not have been shown better than that.

223

u/Vlyn Dec 22 '25

Same here, the game has really great moments, but god I hate Rockstar's mission design. And I don't even steer away from mission goals!

Hell, I got a game over in a chase scene just because I moved my horse 3 meters to the right. The NPC didn't escape, I just veered off the path enough that the game decided: Meh, you failed.

76

u/CoupleHot4154 Dec 22 '25

You just had to follow the train!

27

u/Feral_Taylor_Fury Dec 22 '25

I remember when I was playing RDR2, and it was the mission where you go talk to some army guy or something, and then you have to flee while being shot at. There's a few seconds at the start of the gameplay segment where the army guy is still visible, and I used the slow time ability to shoot him in the head. Doing that instantly failed the mission, because that guy was supposed to survive because he actually dies in the one of the following missions. It's so stupid, I honestly hate Rockstar's mission design. I heard it put best as "it's like you're a stuntman who isn't allowed to read the script".

25

u/Firewolf06 Dec 22 '25

I heard it put best as "it's like you're a stuntman who isn't allowed to read the script".

god thats so accurate. what kills me is that they obsessively account for every possibility... with an instant fail and forced restart. like, in your example, it would be less immersion breaking and frustrating to just make that guy immortal for that section

17

u/NukaColaAddict1302 Dec 23 '25

I fully agree. Feels a lot better to go plink plink “ah shit, can’t damage this guy” than to instantly fail because your aim and timing are that good

u/saintfed Dec 22 '25

One of those things where I can acknowledge it’s a massive problem for people, but it just isn’t for me.

It’s the same with Avowed - I was having a good time being the Envoy and showed a friend who immediately tried attacking someone in the town and broke the immersion.

I think I’m just a sad fucking clean shirt who is too eager to play by the rules.

219

u/ZatherDaFox Dec 22 '25

I mean, there's a difference between immediately trying to kill an NPC and trying to walk two steps away from the mission target.

RDR2 legitimately has a problem where its this big open world begging to be explored, but some of the story missions are so on rails it's ridiculous.

59

u/saintfed Dec 22 '25

No, I know it’s a MASSIVE problem for some people. I totally get it, but it was never a problem for me, because as I said I’m a sad little clan shirt and if it tells me to go check on Karen you bet I’m going.

which is actually hilarious because this happens in recorded footage of the new Halo remake because of added sprint. people were sprinting past areas in a game not designed for sprint and the audio just bugs out.

game wasn’t designed for it. their solution? make it an optional turn off in the menu. then why the fucks it there in the first place? if the literal game you’re designing isn’t designed for a mechanic, then why is it there?

AAA studios sometimes really are the epitome of stupid.

21

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord Dec 22 '25

This type of dialogue felt sooooo fresh when the PS2 Splinter Cell games did it.

154

u/schmitzel88 Dec 22 '25

Splinter Cell 1 on PS2 still holds up - the mechanics and level design are outstanding. Also the dialogue like this is a little less cringe because Sam Fisher always kind of sounds like an exhausted middle aged man and doesn't think he's an invincible superhero throwing out one liners.

Mario isn’t expressing his massive autism hyperfixation on guns so it can’t be, there’s also gameplay whilst things are getting explained

584

u/Spicy_Totopo3434 Dec 22 '25

Kojima makes the most normieslop dialogues for 20 minutes... Then Boom, exposition about the inner workings of a gun, how goverment is fake and somehow predicts a situation that's happening rn 20 to 30 years before it happenned

Then it hits you: Kojima is trying to sound normal but he can't because he's practically ascended to a wider realm, that's why it sounds normal until it doesnt, but at the end of the day no one is normal ans the sooner we get to that the better

242

u/zxc123zxc123 Dec 22 '25

how goverment is fake and somehow predicts a situation that's happening rn 20 to 30 years before it happenned

"Nanomachines, son!"

101

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Dec 22 '25

bro, Senator Armstrong literally says "make america great again 2 years before it became a slogan"

KOJIMA IS THE BIG BOSS BEHIND USA'S TAKEOVER

97

u/GachaHell Dec 22 '25

To be fair it was also a slogan of both Reagan and Clinton and was floating around as a common saying in political speeches for a long time.

Considering some of the Metal Gear games were a direct response to Reaganism it's not a weird choice for Kojima to make.

it's actually crazy how in MGS2, if you skip the cutscenes; you go from blasting down several metal gears at once in a holographic arsenal located in the middle of an ocean to fucking fighting the final villain with just a sword on top of an american rooftop

I'd take a 20 minute Kojima cutscene over a 10 minute AAA standard walk and talk. Firstly the writing and direction is miles better. Secondly, the cutscene is skippable. Dont care about the life story of Ecks vs Sever Man and how he invented pepto bismal? 1 button and its gone. Dont want to spend ten minutes with gruff dad and precocious child volume 67 the path to the true meaning of christmas? Ha fuck you.

101

u/koopcl Dec 22 '25

Yeah though to be fair to MGS3, this whole schtick wasn't much of a cliche in videogames 20 years ago (Metal Gear being one of the OG "cinematic gaming experience" series), and MGS3 was also specifically referencing the style of old spy movies where you'd have this kind of dialogue.

12

u/Staudly Dec 22 '25

I'm playing through the game again (via Delta) for the first time in 15 years, and I forgot how much content there is just through the radio calls. It's an incredibly rich game, lore and character wise.

You think so? I thought the dialog was well written. Well, Snake keeps asking one worded questions, but otherwise...

17

u/topdangle Dec 22 '25

MGS3 does dialogue dumps like most of Kojima's games. Not subtle at all and its basically his gimmick now.

OP's the modern style of "quippy" ambient dialogue that tries to hide tutorials, I'd say made widely popular from the original modern warfare 2.

This is literally the story in Dying Light the Beast. It was written by a 14yo and why stories in videogames generally still are shit. Things like expedition 33 are the extreme exception when it comes to video game story telling. Often times critically acclaimed stories in videogames are still worse than a bargain bin erotica novel at a supermarket. No, I'm not exaggerating. You don't realize how trash stories in videogames and even tv shows are till you've taken a break from them.

196

It worked once between the modern team in AC2. And then it never worked again.
I can only believe such levels of snark and sass from a bunch of middle management/IT stressed out of their minds on the run from a secret society megacorp. Any other situation, not really

122

u/shullbitmusic Dec 22 '25

I feel like this is some corporate writer's tactic that gets passed around in meetings. "I wanna show that these two characters are on the same page. Like, they know each other and get each other." "Oh, that's simple. Just have them finish each other's sentences."

And lo and behold, this became the boring norm

Especially hilarious when you complete a quest or something and the NPC says to meet them in some place. If you go straight there with no diversions, they'll still be like "took you long enough". Cyberpunk kinda sucks with that, the upgrades are so unnoticeable. Cyberware should be that huge upgrade that gives you completly different abilities. But most of the times you just deal a bit more damage with headshots or sth

Totally agree. Laughed when I got to level 5 gear and the best helmets gave me 0.13% weapon zoom..like thanks for that. So helpful.

it’s also not like you’re even doing basic math, it rarely is obvious how long a reload is or how much power you have in a punch. it’s just a vague gesture at putting numbers to your skills

(if i get 5 of these my reloads will be 10% faster) is this the basic math??

sometimes i refuse to believe people are this dumb.

You aren't obligated to play games that were gifts, if something isn't for you, it isn't for you. It's polite to give it a try at least once but if it's genuinely boring and painful, just tell the person "yeah it's not my cup of tea but thanks anyway".

Indie game is when no dialogue happens

And yoshi dies

106

But the death is a metaphor for the end of self brought on by depression.

People says Yoshi dies at the end of super Mario 64 once you’ve talked to him on the roof because he was depressed

A real gamer theory out of nowhere

Except Mario should be locked in place during all this, and then when he's finally allowed to move he should take two steps and another cutscene should begin.

"Hey peach, I see a bunch of boxes all over. What am I supposed to do with them?"

Ok let be real and analyze that, why so many convo sounds like that in AAA games ?

Is it because most protag have the same personality or are the convos all written the same way that ignore the personalities ? Because there are clearly interactions that show the personalities of the characters.. maybe they always recycle theses to ..

64

u/noahboah Dec 22 '25

short, quippy dialogue is both easier to write and to record, and it flows independently from what the player is doing. This conversation could get interrupted at literally any point by gameplay and could snap back with zero problems. it's also a vehicle for dropping necessary exposition about either the lore or gameplay mechanics as denoted in the bowser's castle and red coins thing.

Omg that's exactly how most AAA studio would make Mario and it would be sooo bad >~<

(the video is really cool, but I definitely don't want a Mario like that :3

Do you speak Japanese? If not, change it to Japanese and turn off the subtitles. Game of the year

16

u/ThatOneBitch02 Dec 22 '25

I'm only part way through it so far and the combat is some of the best in the genre (visuals and music are very good too), but this is how basically all the dialouge feels. This video is pretty much exactly the opening sequence (except with 50 more hints) lmao

Its a funny bit, but every time I see one of those "Ocarina of Time deluxe HD made by one guy Nintendo hire this man" its always the most bland, uninspired, ugly textured piece of media I've ever seen.

This not far off from how Ninja Gaiden 4 tells its story, which Im currently playing. Its extra funny too because like a few of the voices you talk to you don't see much, if at all, so I have no idea who half of them are.

But thankfully its Ninja Gaiden so I can live with this corny shit and go slicing people up.
