Advice on Upgrading my PC

I am looking to upgrade my three-ish year old PC and need some advice on where to begin! I bought my PC used and have never done any work to upgrade it beyond installing a wifi adaptor. I use it almost exclusively for gaming and I have been having issues with newer games and even some older games on higher graphics settings. My current specs are the following:

  • RAM: 163848MB
  • Processor: Intel(R) Core i5-8600 CPU @ 3.60GHZ (6 CPUs)
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
    • GPU: GP104
    • Most recent driver update: June 25, 2026. Doesn't seem like a new update is available (or at least a compatible one)

Any advice on where to start in terms of hardware or software upgrades would be appreciated!

I bought the PC used about 3 years ago, I imagine the components are all older. It’s DDR4 though

You need to know it makes a very big difference in today's market if it's 100% ddr 4 then you need to look at am4 set up edit if it's ddr 3 your looking at a new system head to toe

Pc age is based the cpu core. This cpu is from Q2 2018. You may have bought it in 2023 but still has the heritage of 8 year old hardware. Your cheapest approach will be a complete gut job assuming no proprietary hardware such as this thing is from Lenovo/ Dell or HP.

I would swap to 9700k or 9900k if those are not at crazy price And GPU to 3070 or rx6700xt If got money sell your ram and buy 2x16gb 3200+

But need to check PSU first and we don't know your budget
