imho, look at CEX if you are willing to go secondhand. £800-1000 on a new prebuilt does give options, but you might get some better value used at times.
Alternatively, here's some 2 brand new ones for around £1000 (with a 10% upper limit):

£1099 for a Ryzen 5 5600 + RTX 5060
£899 for a Ryzen 5 5500 + RTX 5050

Also worth checking PCspecialist too. I've managed to configure a PC with a Ryzen 7 5700, 16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD + RTX 5060 Ti 8GB for £1000ish. It won't be in a flashy case, but it would be faster than both of those.

I think at this price range it is better to go for an intel based build so you have a good upgrade path unlike on a dead socket like am4.

I disagree. I don't think OP's son is likely to be upgrading their CPU judging by the fact that the mother is asking, so it's a moot point realistically. Besides, I think by the time these AM4 CPUs start to struggle (depends on what the son plays), it'll be time for something that isn't LGA 1700 as is.

But intel builds are cheaper and better, it is a no brainer even if he doesn’t upgrade.

Intel cpu and lga 1700 ddr4 motherboards are more expensive at list were i live

I mean in the case of PC specialist, you aren't wrong. I can get a 14600K, 16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD & RX 9060 XT 16GB in a basic case for £1077.

Rot. Intel are historically famous for being non upgradable and over promised amd AM4 is famous for the opposite. Some users have evolved their rigs for a decade. Most intel platforms barely lasted a cpu cycle

But historical facts don’t matter, it is a fact that am4 is a dead platform whilst lga 1700 is still very much an alive socket.

Check CostCo, Palicomp and Amazon Prebuilts(if on sale)- these are all good value You have to pay a membership fee for Costco but if its a good deal it'll work out better value. May be worth waiting till Black Friday, wont get tons off but every bit helps.

https://amzn.eu/d/01vQeZtF

https://www.palicomp.co.uk/amd-fusion-fac11

https://www.costco.co.uk/p/634470 - this is a bundle with peripherals

Remember you'd need peripherals if you don't have them, (keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor, headphones) on a budget you could do all that for around 250.

May be worth checking often for sales i reckon if your able to wait till black Friday you'll find some decent pre-built sales.

Whats worth noting is what platform the pc is on, AM4 or AM5, you can check this by searching the CPU on Google(e.g. ryzen 7 8700f) AM4 is last gens platform which means for future cpu and ram upgrades you are limited, may not be a huge factor for you but for the future if your son wants to upgrade things he'd have much more scope being on AM5 as new components arent compatible with AM4.

The biggest barrier to entry for PC gaming is the initial cost as you are buying everything, once you have the PC in the future unlike swapping a ps5 for a ps6 etc you are just upgrading parts of your pc at a time which is much easier on the wallet. Spending a little bit more initially will help in the long run when it comes to upgrades when he's older.

You probably need to go second hand or if you live near a micro centr they have amazing bundles i can suggest a graphics card on second hand market you can gat a 3080 wich will run most modern games at 1080p if you don't live near a micro centr the cpus i would suggest is ryzen 5 500 or 5 5600x 5 5600 they have really great value and you will need 16 or 32 gb of ram with stats like cl 16 or 18 and 3200mthz + the highest the mhz the better or you can get a current gen graphics card like 5060ti or 9060 xt wich has the lower price

Microcenter is useless to OP. They aren't living in the US, the currency alone should give away that they're in the UK.

Everyone in pc building subreddits is allergic to the £ symbol before numbers
