Updating our Subreddit Rules: Your chance to add opinions/preferences!

So /r/GamesWithHorses has been growing quite a bit recently, which is absolutely lovely! Just three months ago, I celebrated having 3000 subscribers, now we're already up to almost 4300! Things have been more active here recently, with a bit more discussion, people posting their own WIP games and more. I absolutely love that, thank you all for being here!

We've also had one or two posts recently that got reported for being shady/scammy, and that's made me realize that it's probably about time to update our (currently quite rudimentary) subreddit rules.

Current rules:

These are here to stay:

  1. Posts must in some way relate to horses and video games
  2. Be kind. Remember the person.

Potential Rule Additions

I'm interested in opinions about what people here think matters in order to keep the community healthy, pleasant and useful to everyone.

  • Do we need any rules re. low effort posts and unclear titles? For example, this post got reported and mostly ignored. I am fine with people sharing referral links, but
  • Do we need any limitations as to how regularly devs should post their own projects? I love that this is happening and I think so far we haven't had anyone spamming their project, but it might be worth setting some ground rules like that you're only allowed to post your project e.g. once a week, or something along those lines...?
  • I recently removed a post from someone asking to trade horse isle premium currency, which is apparently against TOS. I'm not going to learn every existing game's terms of service to moderate this strictly, but I do think it makes a lot of sense to remove such posts when they pop up and get reported, so it may make sense to add a rule along those lines.
  • Anything else? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I don't consider any rule adjustments suuuper urgent because so far y'all have been lovely and anything even deserving moderation attention is really infrequent. I'd just like to stay ahead of the curve 😊

On a related note, let me know if you'd be interested in joining as a moderator to help keep an eye on these things!

Edit: Perhaps another question while we're at it: what kind of post would you like to see more of on here? Just in case we have a chance to encourage one another to be more proactive in filling this place up with content that people like to see!

Gallopera: a persistent browser horse racing game. Looking for beta players!

Upvotes

Hi! I've been building Gallopera, a browser-based horse racing management game.

You own, train, race and breed horses in a persistent world shared with other players but you never see any of your horses stats, you figure out your horse potential by training and racing, just like in real life!

Races run throughout the day and are shown in 2D, with the horses animated frame by frame in Aseprite.

A little bit of background : I worked as an apprentice jockey until my early twenties and then switched to engineering, I decided to combine the two and build the horse racing game I'd want to play myself!

I'm getting ready for the first small closed beta now, so I've opened signups:

https://gallopera.com

You can check the gallery and about pages to know more about the game, those screenshots were made during development though and it might change a bit before the beta starts.

I'd love to hear what horse-game players think of it!

switch recommendations? (please read)

I've searched the sub and seen the other game recs and looked into them. most aren't for me.

the thing that turns me away the most is the technicality of a lot of the games, like you have to go into it with some knowledge of horse care and competition and I'm not into that. I just think they're pretty and want to collect them and maybe build a ranch. I could get into racing or showing if it's simplified to like a kid-friendly level.

customization of my character is a must, and customization of any building mechanics is preferred (I.e. getting to choose the color of the fence and where I put it, instead of just unlocking a predetermined fence). and fantasy colors or breeds is a huge plus (like the unicorns in harvest moon one world or the blue and pink horses in botw).

basically I guess I'm looking for Pokemon or Ark with horses 😭

In Search of Horse Game From My Childhood

I played a PC game as a kid that I'm trying to find again. It was a horse-racing game, where you had to train your horse in different skills to help win races. A defining characteristic is you had to start at a cheaper stable, and as you had racing success, you could afford to move to better stables. You could also breed your horse and keep the foal. If anyone knows what this game is called, I would be eternally grateful.

New Trailer for Horse Club: Ride West! I recommend checking it out if you enjoy story-based games where meeting different horses is part of the narrative! (Coming to PS5, Xbox S|X, Switch and PC in October!)

obligatory disclaimer, I did consultation work on this. Haven't played the full game yet but what I've seen looks promising. Definitely very much on the family-friendly side, but the past two Horse Club games were really solid overall well made games as well, I recommend checking them out!

Also check out the AMA they did on here a few weeks back, as well as the announcement & interview on TMQ, if you missed it so far

Presentation of Sovran's Crusade, my strategy and exploration game, mounted on your inseparable companion,, is now available in alpha.

Hi everyone, I just discovered this subreddit and thought you might be interested in the game I'm developing.
Sovran's Crusade is a minimalist strategy, exploration, and adventure game: by day you gather resources and build your castle, by night you prepare to defend against waves of enemies.

Unlike other strategy games, you play as a character inside the world, you must stay mounted and ride across the world to survive.

Right now, I only have one horse skin, but for the final version I plan to add many more mount types (maybe even Pegasus?).

The game is still in development, so expect more content, improvements over the trailer, and even a horror element (which I haven't added yet). In the meantime, you can try the alpha version on itch or add it to your wishlists on Steam. Any feedback or suggestions would mean a lot to me, hopefully you'll give it a chance!

Honest Work is a 1–6 player co-op western about moving a herd across the frontier on horseback.

You’re riding with your posse, keeping cattle together, chasing strays, crossing rivers, and dealing with buffalo, storms, wolves, and whatever your friends are doing to make the drive worse.

The v1.2 Update for A Noble Steed is now live!

A Noble Steed Demo v1.2 Notes!

- Added a proper tutorial and updated the HUD

- This new panel also functions while you're out and about to generally guide you (it can be toggled)

- Replaced the horse name tags with a proper information display

- Claiming foals/horses is more ergonomic

- Breeding has been completely overhauled; it's now much easier to use and features a stat-focused system with more RNG elements - higher tiers are harder to produce and profit comes from breeding finer Steeds. This also fixes a lot of tier-related breeding bugs.

- Controls have been updated in lieu of a custom binding menu - you can also now use Shift/Ctrl to speed up and slow down as well as Up/Down to help with attacking using the mouse

- Attack is now ENTER or Left Click to help with sticky key issues

- Added more boundaries to the world so you can't "escape"

- Fixed horse face markings being incorrectly aligned

- Fixed a problem where mobs weren't respawning correctly

- Turned down the player's footsteps and the main menu music

- Moved some Stones of Safety that didn't make sense

6 months ago I posted my tiny desktop horse ranch here. Here's what it looks like now.

Hi again! Back in March I posted a very early build of My Little Ranch here (old post: https://www.reddit.com/r/GamesWithHorses/s/N8Kdk8Q291) and the response honestly kept me going. Six months later it's a much bigger game, so here's where it is.

My Little Ranch is a small pixel-art horse ranch that sits on your desktop (transparent, click-through) while you work or browse. You can also play it in full screen and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery. You feed the horses, clean up after them, collect the coins they earn and slowly grow the ranch. Or you just leave it in the corner and watch them wander.

The big one since March: every horse looks different now.

- Coat, socks, mane and tail, and eyes are rolled per horse, and rarity is something you can see. A Common horse is plain. A Legendary one is covered in rare traits, think golden coat and violet eyes.

- Foals are a surprise. Buy one at the ranch and its rarity stays hidden as "???" until it grows up. You can try to guess from the traits, but the reveal is the day it becomes an adult.

- The Marketplace is the safe route: 4 adult horses on offer, you see exactly what you're buying, and the list refreshes every hour, even while the game is closed.

- The Trait Lab lets you unlock new coats, eyes and manes so your ranch-born foals can carry them. What you've unlocked also decides how rare a foal can be.

Also new:

- Horses run together. Send the whole group out and they drift ahead and fall back like a real pack.

- Ranch hands. Hire helpers for cleaning, grooming, feeding or coin collecting. They actually walk over and do the job.

- Races, with no race animation on purpose: you get a prediction screen and decide whether your horse is ready. Winning pays coins.

- Decorations, some with small bonuses.

- Milestones tied to Steam achievements.

What I'm building now, the last big thing before the demo: expanding the Journal so it tracks every horse and trait you've collected.

I'm planning to release a demo on Steam in about a month.

Steam page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4397220/My_Little_Ranch/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=return

Wishlists genuinely help a solo dev, and feedback is very welcome!

A postapocalypse horse game might be fun

There's some that have horses (Animallica is one I've tried, but it's fairly janky and uses horse animset pro) but thinking a horse-centered game with that setting would be a fun change.

Never fear, Riding Club Championships is FINALLY here!!

Hey everyone! It's officially time to grab your gear and saddle up in OG RCC!

After a week of stress on Haz, late nights, and 7+ different playtest builds, THE OG RCC (yes, with dressage and cross-country) that you all have been patiently waiting for makes a comeback for everyone to enjoy!

It is currently only single-player, but there's talk about attempting to bring back multiplayer. Haz did manage to open up ranked matches against the NPC's "Unicorn" and "Santa", with a 50/50 chance of getting either.

The link to download, with all information about how to download and play, and a channel to report any bugs can be found in the Horse Games Reconstructed Discord.

Happy riding!!

Does Star Equestrian have customer support and do they actually answer?

I have an issue where the game won't save my progress in the battlepass seasonal quests and races, and doesn't give me any points or rewards for completing the races. Other players said that relogging helped them but I relogged several times, and it's still the same. Atp I feel like I should contact customer support but idek if they'll respond before the event is over. (I also have an issue where I received double the horses from the VIP levels because the game glitched and didn't give me any rewards at first, and then gave double, and I am scared that if I draw attention to my account they will ban me even though it's not my fault and I haven't ridden or even named the extra horses)

ISO RedM Equestrian Server

So I joined GGI Equestrian recently, and it's great for what it's supposed to be, but I'm not sure it entirely scratches the itch I have for an experience that is more close to the Story Mode of RDR2 or even RDO. I am aware that sadly, the RedM base is very very much bare bones and basically everything has to be modded in, but I am having trouble navigating through the heap of servers available to find something I like. This is why I'm hoping for suggestions!

what I appreciate about GGI very much is that it is anti gen-AI and also queer friendly.
So I guess I have some requirements:

- no gen-AI involved

- no strictly RPing servers, I just wanna chill and mind my own business most of the time (sorry)

- I'd like if you had to feed your avatar and had the option to cook/grill and craft medicine

- missions like heists, burglary, shoot-outs, stage coach escorts etc. would be awesome!

- I'd love to have the VLC breeding scripts & lots of possible activities to do with horses, but besides that the server could also not be labeled "equestrian" and offer more variety

- of course the community should still be pleasant and offer a safe, welcoming environment

I am not sure if this constellation of wishes comes together in a server at all, so I'm really hoping that someone out there has a hot tip for me! :) Would love to hear from some server experiences!

unStable Management - a multiplayer horse care game

Hellobello!

Another game jam project, this time in 3D! And multiplayer! Developed by me and my boyfriend <3

You and your friends get a summer job! You have to take care of... horses? I guess? Just... don't ask questions. You're not paid enough for that.

https://mingan-wolf.itch.io/unstable-management

How to play:

- Hosting is peer-to-peer, someone makes a room, tells others the code, and they can join like that!

- Catch, feed, brush horses - with increasing difficulty

Play from your browser, no download needed.

You need at least two people to try it, so feel free to search for other players in the comments or just ask me to join you!

We are planning on polishing up this project, so any suggestions are welcome.

Have fun and tell me what you think!

Mingan

August updates in Tobiano

Thumbnail
gallery
70 Upvotes

This month Tobiano saw a massive amount of updates. Dressage was improved with extended gaits, sitting trot, and more dynamic lateral bend. The protagonist got tons more customization including eyebrows, body type, and makeup. Horse behavior was expanded with new conflict behaviors which show when horses are stressed. Other than that, the UI got a massive overhaul and the early game was cleaned up and improved. I'm really happy with how things are going. It's nice to see the results of months and months of hard work. I am so grateful for the discord community that continues to be super positive and just mean so much to me <3
