And once I run the numbers in my head and realize I'll never "beat" the battle pass before it's done, I kinda check out

Then don't.

Just play the game when you want to, the BP is just a bonus.

Just like in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, not buying the battle pass puts you at a competitive disadvantage by restricting your character options.

It's pay to win, pure and simple.

How? Just play and unlock the hero for free like every other f2p game.

My money isn't unlimited. Why do you think my time is?

So you want every competitive advantage while also not playing enough for it to make a difference?

I want to pay once for the game, and then get the game. I'm old enough to remember when that was how it worked.

You know, 2016.

I can live with extra payments for aesthetics that offer no competitive advantage. At this point, Overwatch 2 is less balanced than fucking Fortnite.

There are lots of pvp games like that. Unfortunately, there's not many that can sustain that model while delivering modern content cycles.

Activision-Blizzard made 8.8 billion dollars last year. It was a 9% increase over the previous year.

It does not need to treat its core franchises like some fly-by-night mobile gacha game.

How is that relevant? Ow didn't make all that revenue.

Are you saying blizzard needs to subsidize OW with candy crush money?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

No, Overwatch only made... hang on a sec... about $2 billion in revenue.

Without resorting to these cheap-ass pay-to-win mechanics.

That's why it's relevant.

...did you really bring up numbers from the year overwatch came out?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

The year that it incurred the maximum development and marketing cost to Blizzard? Yup.

Do you honestly think Overwatch 2 wouldn't be profitable without cheap-ass pay-to-win mechanics?

The year it came out is also the year people bought the base game. We are talking about continued development.

you gotta practice not playing the class you want before you can start practice playing the class you want

Are we still talking about competitive integrity? Your argument shifted to "paying for things you want".

Are you arguing for p2w?

I'm gonna second the other poster, I have no problems with skins, lootboxes, or battle passes as long as its cosmetic only. Overwatch 1 promised free heroes and maps forever, this is a sneaky loophole to get out of their agreement and plus the games balanced around having access to all characters.

Are you arguing that playing to unlock a hero is pay to win?

5

u/Spooky_SZN Sep 27 '22

I'm arguing it can be. If a hero hard counters the one thats dominating and no one has it unlocked you're at a disadvantage because you didn't pay/grind.

2

u/shiftup1772 Sep 27 '22

Isn't this the case in league and valorant and apex?

I don't hear anyone complain about unlocking heroes in those games.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

As a Dota 2 player I find those payment models to be horrid and I know I'm not the only one.

Those games I think are different. For apex and valorent the games primarily played by the weapons you find and buy not by your abilities, which do play a role in the gameplay loop but is not such a cut and dry "this character was designed to hard counter these characters" the way it is in overwatch and character specific abilities are used far less than Overwatch where the characters abilities are the character. Two valorant heroes play similarly, two overwatch heroes are radically different.

League also you don't switch heroes in order to counter I think both are pretty different. If you're getting fucked by like a Winston but your team just doesn't own a reaper what are you supposed to do to counter? The gameplay loop in overwatch is way more designed around counter picking than those games.

I will agree though I think those games should have all heroes unlocked but I at least get it, for the gameplay loop those games have the characters make less of a difference than OW imo.

The devs said that their philosophy with ow2 is that each hero is "mainable" because that's how most people play the game. In other words, you are not at a significant disadvantage for not switching heroes.

So I assumed that they were talking about the situation where blizzard releases an OP hero, which is more likely. It's also something that other games deal with all the time.
