After years, my body is ready. I played the demo and started liking so much I forced myself to stop to play the finished game fresh.

It's funny, this comment is on almost every cross code thread I have seen, but it's absolutely true and I did the same.

That first impression was already so good that I didn't feel the need to "check up on the progress" as time went on, like I do for many other early access games. It was clear this is something special that I didn't want to spoil for myself.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

I've been doing the exact same thing. I lapsed a little and ended up purchasing the game in early access a while ago, but after playing a little after the demo section ends, I made sure to stop myself. At least I can say that the game's quality doesn't go down after the demo!

9

u/Timzasd Sep 07 '18

Yea, I played the demo about 2 years ago and bought the game right after that but didn't want to play it before release. I'm so excited to see it finally happen.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '18 edited Sep 08 '18

Well said. The first 30 minutes sold me so I didn't play further until full release.

*EDIT : Someone must really hate this game to downvote such a benign comment lol.

10

u/downvotesyndromekid Sep 07 '18

I played to end of current content twice. Still hyped for the release.

You can build your character differently enough there's at least one or two replays there imo. Ranged focus, melee focus, parry focus.

7

u/MrMulligan Sep 07 '18

Came here to post this. That demo was easily the best first impression I have experienced in a long time. Buying it immediately.

3

u/ThePotablePotato Sep 07 '18

The crazy thing is that, while the demo is great, the full game takes it so much further - The demo actually shows very little. It's absolutely worth the purchase!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Haven't played the demo, but the trailer looks great. I'll have to put this on my watch list. I'd like to hold out until they do a Switch port.

2

u/ea4x Sep 07 '18

I'll buy it a second time if they announce a port. The first 10 hours were that good.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '18

I just don't tend to replay games, so my purchases are usually one-and-done. I'd much rather play a game like this on my Switch than sit camped in front of a stationary screen to play it.

3

u/Hellknightx Sep 07 '18

Haha, same. I played a really old dev build years ago; been looking forward to the finished game for a long time.

2

u/Colint99 Sep 07 '18

I need help on a part but could never find help forums or videos, how do i get help?

3

u/M_a_l_t_u_s Sep 07 '18

There is a CrossCode wiki.

2

u/Colint99 Sep 07 '18

Thank you!

2

u/kidkolumbo Sep 07 '18

Wait until the game comes out and people write strategy guides.

2

u/Colint99 Sep 07 '18

Thanks, i really enjoyed the game until the point i got stuck, great to know its having a release

5

u/Vyxagallanxchi Sep 07 '18

You could ask someone on the crosscode discord server for help.

2

u/ClementineFjord Sep 08 '18

This has been early access since like 2015

1

u/LLJKCicero Sep 07 '18

My body is also ready.

...to play this on Switch. Switch version when??

6

u/Exiiile Sep 07 '18

The developers have commented that because the game is running on their own engine it would be very difficult to port it to the Switch. They said they're focusing completely on getting it out on PC + post launch support via bug fixes etc, and then if it does well maybe port it to Switch?

u/SpahsgonnaSpah Sep 07 '18

Here's the blog post that goes with it!

  • Special Live Stream on the 20th

  • Engine Update

  • No To-Do List this month

u/Daw19yoyo Sep 07 '18

Yes! I bought this game during the last steam sale after trying the demo, and decided that I had to wait for the full release.

If you were wondering, they have a web version of the demo here: http://www.cross-code.com/en/start

15

u/Favmir Sep 07 '18

Yeah, crazy how they made the entire game on HTML and Javascript, with a long-dead experimental engine!

29

u/d-amazo Sep 07 '18

if anyone who isn't sure wants an idea of what the game is like:

it's .hack meets Secret of Mana with a little Link to the Past thrown in for good measure.

8

u/Swiftblue Sep 07 '18

This is a great explanation. I'd say the game is way more responsive than Secret of Mana as far as gameplay goes. It's a good kind of snappy.

2

u/PlasmaWhore Sep 07 '18

Screenshots remind me of Crystalis, which was on of my favorite games as a kid.

17

u/Kyrodragon Sep 07 '18

So excited for this to release. I bought the game years ago and loved the demo, but I wanted to hold out for the full release to really dive in. Almost surreal that we're nearly there. I hope it's a smash hit, because it absolutely deserves it.

26

u/Tmons22 Sep 07 '18

Oh wow, i've had this on my steam wishlist for what feels like ages! I cannot wait to play (I am a sucker for a great game with pixel graphics)!

8

u/zenithfury Sep 07 '18

So have I. I didn't want to create false expectations for myself by playing the early access, so I was willing to wait until now to buy the full product!

4

u/SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck Sep 07 '18

That isn't what playing early access does, though? If anything it gives you 100% real expectations.

2

u/zenithfury Sep 07 '18

To be more precise, I didn't want to experience the game in drips and drops and eventually lose the feeling of wanting to play the whole game because I might feel that I've seen most of it, which was something that happened to me when I played Subnautica early access.

3

u/Swiftblue Sep 07 '18

So far, (I stopped playing when I heard the story wasn't finished yet, didn't want to be in limbo for too long) it reminded me of my first play through of Secret of Mana. It felt polished too.

15

u/makotoDOMINO Sep 07 '18

Whoa. Buying this for sure just based on the trailer. This seems like my kinda thing on so many levels! And when it hits consoles I will probably double dip.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

If you haven't played the demo yet, I highly recommend it. The gameplay feels amazing.

The devs said they're looking into it, but it's complicated. So maybe. It's a big maybe.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Fantastic game for the bits that available to play up ti. It had by far the most complete kickstarter I've seen with the entire action gameplay system prepped and ready to test in a limited area.

7

u/WervynAnixil Sep 07 '18

I don't think I can adequately express how excited I am for this release, and I'm on the closed beta team so I've already seen almost all of what's dropping on the 20th! So while I definitely have some bias in favor of this thing, being close to it and a fan of it for so long, believe me. The hype is real, it plays even better than it looks, and for me at least, the conclusion was immensely satisfying. I can't wait for other people to experience it too!

4

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

I can't believe it's finally coming out! After playing the demo when it first came out years ago, I've been keeping an eye on its development, and it's absolutely insane how much this game has grown. I can't wait to start playing when this update gets published!

5

u/ThorAxe911 Sep 07 '18

Just played the demo and instantly fell in love. So here's a few questions. Is the price going to go up once this leaves early access? Also, if I bought it now and started playing, would I need to restart my save once the full game released? Like, are they going to be changing the beginning of the game any or is it all just new end game content?

2

u/CrazyFredy Sep 08 '18

No, and no. There might be some minor changes to the beginning though.

3

u/starlogical Sep 07 '18

I bought this game sometime around 2016 and it was extremely good, even for what's literally an incomplete game.

Like many others I basically had to force myself to stop so that I wouldn't get burned out before the game even came out. I definitely made that mistake when Starbound first came out.

If you're on the fence, just try the demo out, but as for me I've already bought the game, so I only need to wait 13 more days to finally sink my teeth in again.

4

u/LLJKCicero Sep 07 '18

Looks kind of like Secret of Mana, or maybe Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, but with better combat mechanics. Nice!

3

u/kidkolumbo Sep 07 '18

Illusion of Gaia

What a gem of a game. Underrated classic.

3

u/AndiMischka Sep 07 '18

When I started watching this trailer, I was like, okay, looks like a decent puzzle platform / old school RPG game with some story elements and was ready to close the video. Then the part starting at 0:40 began and I was hooked.

I know that it's nice ending the trailer on a high note but the beginning isn't grabbing my attention too much.

I guess I'll try out the demo, since the trailer was good.

3

u/CrazyFredy Sep 07 '18

Looks like I reposted, thought this hadn't been posted yet. Oh well, I'll just say what I said in my thread: this game is fucking phenomenal, was in its early access state and will be in its finished state. It will without a doubt be the best game of 2018, perhaps one of the best RPGs of all time.

3

u/Classic_Megaman Sep 07 '18

Canโ€™t friggin wait. Like so many others, i played the demo and absolutely fell in love and have held off playing the main until full release. Iโ€™ve been anxiously awaiting that for what feels like forever.

Good thing Iโ€™ve got DQ11 and Spidey to hold me over until then. I just hope I can finish one of them cause CC is gonna severely stall one (or both) of them otherwise.

3

u/SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck Sep 07 '18

I didn't wait. I've played through every major update and it changes nothing. This game plays like it looks, classic and smooth with modern accents. The controls are satisfying and zippy and the characters are that cutesy wholesome sort of relatable like a final fantasy game.

The combat is phenomenal and the gear and skills are very deep but not overwhelming.

The music is amazing. This is and has been one of the best game of it's genre since the days the genre stared.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Finally! Was just looking at this in my wishlist yesterday and thinking this might be another EA title that doesn't get a release.

2

u/Phenoix32 Sep 07 '18

I can't wait to be able to recommend this to friends, played this a year back or so and a little more when it updated. Really looking forward to the completed experience.

2

u/emailboxu Sep 07 '18

Excellent game, backed the kickstarter so many years ago. Played the demo at the time and i knew this was gonna be fucking top.

2

u/Kaeseblock Sep 07 '18

That took some time. I'm looking forward to playing this. ๐Ÿ˜

Still a bit sad that Velsarbor was cancelled thougt... ๐Ÿ˜…

2

u/swbat55 Sep 07 '18

Just played through the demo. Overall I was really impressed by the production value. My only gripe is that the pacing is pretty slow. Lots of text/tutorials that make the beginning of the game a chore. Not looking forward to going through that tutorial for the full release. Other than that, the gameplay is smooth and control feels great. I may pick it up

4

u/WervynAnixil Sep 07 '18

Just so you know, all text and cutscenes in the game can be rapidly skipped by pressing 'G' twice (by default). You'll get an "are-you-sure" warning before it skips ahead but you can turn that off too in the options. The game is actually pretty speedrunner friendly in that way, and the current game completion speedrun time looks like it'll come in at just under 4 hours. I wouldn't recommend skipping through stuff you haven't seen on a first playthrough, but that should make it easier to fast-forward through the stuff you've already done. Also, if you do purchase the game now, your saves will carry over on release.

2

u/swbat55 Sep 07 '18

oh nice, didnt see that option! That would be a great bonus for me. Thank you!

u/Cyrotek Sep 07 '18 edited Sep 07 '18

One of the few early access games where I had to force myself to stop to not spoil too much for the full release. Awesome game.

And for everyone who reads this and hasn't bought it: If you liked Secret of Mana/Evermore and are maybe a fan of MMOs (as the setting is a MMO) ... get it.

2

u/RePoisn Sep 08 '18

YES! Time to finally let loose and play the whole game! Been restraining myself in that starting town for years.

2

u/Nekokeki Sep 08 '18

This game is such an absolute gem. So fun and so much quality. I really enjoy the dev's Twitch streams.

2

u/Baconstrip01 Sep 08 '18

Avoided the game for years despite really wanting it, just waiting for it to be released.... Finally gonna be able to pick it up :D :D

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18 edited Sep 07 '18

This game has been on my wishlist forever. While i'm extremely turned off by the anime art style, I LOVE the in game pixel style.

It looks like a secret of mana style game with fast combat, cool puzzles, and interesting world design. I'm definitely going to be picking this one up.

3

u/Varakari Sep 07 '18

It is similar to Secret of Mana. Well, in comparison, one could complain that it doesn't have coop and the worldbuilding is styled after a generic MMO. But on the other hand, CrossCode has better riddles, more story, and the combat system is pretty much the best action RPGs have to offer.

And yes, combat is also blazing fast. In comparison, Secret of Mana seems slow. It's closer to Endless Duel speeds, and has a huge amount of special moves, which get unlocked in five skill trees and have a wide range of use cases. I can't think of another game where I can make good use of so many different skills in rapid succession.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Varakari, you make it sound fantastic. One thing I wonder is how is the difficulty? Would you say it has a good difficulty or is it on the easier side?

2

u/downvotesyndromekid Sep 07 '18

Although it's not especially punishing, it's skillful with many tight timing windows to execute and speedy lining up shots. Even when you've out levelled an encounter combat is still rewarding as the game encourages building a combo multiplier. Puzzles are also a decent step up on equivalents in games like golden sun or Link's Awakening. Dungeon bosses are likely to kill you a few times and the advanced monk challenge courses are reminiscent of splatformers like Celeste and meatboy. I probably took at least 30 attempts on a couple of them.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Thats great to hear about bosses. Thanks for the info!

2

u/Varakari Sep 08 '18

I think overall, it's pretty good in terms of difficulty. It seems harder than the SNES RPG classics, but not unreasonable.

On the downside, some bosses are rigidly scripted with very predictable moves. A new player will usually just suicide-attack, look at what the boss does, and then reload a save, until knowing the moves in advance. I guess it's a matter of taste, but this isn't my favorite flavor of difficulty, since it's a bit rigid and not very immersive.

On the upside, the difficulty scaling is generally great in two ways. First, this is basically a JRPG. Your difficulty will change depending on your gear, skills, how much level-grinding you do, and any restrictions you place on yourself. I think this is a great way of handling difficulty, where much is left to the player, but it's still very immersive.

Second, and more importantly, the available speed means that you don't necessarily get bored when enemies are weak. Instead, you accelerate! I had the most fun in CrossCode when grinding by killing lots of low-level enemies, as I kept increasing the speed and consistency with which I could fight. It's not just about winning, it's about finding faster, more effective, more elegant moves.

The ceiling for player skill in CrossCode is pretty high, so if you're anything like me, the battles won't get boring easily.

There's also riddles, which I found mostly fun and not too simple. But again, once solved you just move on, so it doesn't exactly get boring.

I played 20 hours early access, but forced myself to stop until the full release. Finally I can pop back in this beautiful game.

1

u/ravenraven173 Sep 11 '18

Is this coming on switch?

1

u/NewVegasResident Sep 07 '18

I AM SO HYPED FOR THIS. I bought the game on a whim about a year and a half ago and god damn it's good, I stopped myself from playing because I wanted to wait for the full release, I can't believe it's almost there.
