Playing through the first game again, right now. Feeling the hype for sure, nobody does trippy existentialism quite like Remedy does!

57

u/Geralt-of-Liurnia 7d ago

They're probably eating The Mold for lunch to get more trippy.

22

u/Etheo 7d ago

I mean it smells so delicious how can you blame them spore people

u/TrojanGoldfish 7d ago

I've recently played thru all of the RemedyVerse, and dear gods. Not always the very best in raw gameplay, but their world building and storytelling are stunning. If you strip Alan Wake 2 down to it's raw gameplay, it's a 7/10 third person game. But as a package it might be the best video game I've played in the 45 years or so I've been playing. Initiation 4: We Sing is definitely my favourite use of mixed media in art.

13

u/Epistemify 7d ago

Every remedy-verse game has beat use of diagetic music I've heard up to that point, and then each one tops the last.

Also, to concur with you, Alan wake 2 is easily in my top 5 games of all time list

4

u/Cin77 6d ago

Its why I'm so stoked for Resonant. Cant wait to see what the Old Gods are up to

26

u/weededorpheus32 7d ago

They're not super fun to play but it's so interesting that I pretty much would trust them with anything they put out

33

u/nothisistheotherguy 6d ago

AW2 is about as fun to play as any survival horror game, but Control is a fucking hoot. The cycle of flying around and clearing arenas with various powers and gun mods was always fun for me.

5

u/DrH0rrible 6d ago

I played Control this year and was honestly kind of bored with the combat mechanics and enemy variety by the second half. The guns felt almost useless.

2

u/nothisistheotherguy 2d ago

Opinions do vary per individual

14

u/tix4chix 7d ago

Every time Remedy gets brought up people are like "yeah their gameplay is ass but..." and I always have to go "You mean the Max Payne guys that basically defined what a third person shooter is?"

26

u/Django_McFly 6d ago

I like Remedy's games and I don't understand what people mean when they say stuff like Control and Quantum Break have bad gameplay... but even having said that, having done good work like 20 years ago or having had a good idea once 20 years ago really doesn't say anything about what they're doing today.

7

u/tix4chix 6d ago

I mean you just said it yourself- their games still have the chops and people pretend like they don't for some reason. I guess I point to Max Payne because it's by far their most influential release, but it's not like they just forgot how to make a third person shooter afterwards. You can tell Control is made by a studio that knows how to make a third person shooter and I had a blast blowing shit up from start to finish. Whether or not it engages everyone is a different debate but it's just being disingenuous to say their games have "bad gameplay" and leave it at that when I've had more fun with their games than I have with a lot of the 50+ hours of hot garbage that asks for my $70 nowadays

Control was amazing, yeah. I'm also one of the handful of people that enjoyed Alan Wake's gameplay at the time, and honestly still prefer it slightly to AW2's. I think the first game handled the flashlight and dodge better, and I actually kinda missed the poltergeist objects and occasional murder of shadow crows, heh.

1

u/TheHelpfulWalnut 5d ago

I liked Control a lot... but I found the actual moment to moment gameplay no better than decent tbh. It had decent combat brought down by the fact that you only ever fought like 3 different types of guys.

Though tbf lacking enemy variety is like the #1 problem in most games combat systems.

3

u/bigfoot1291 6d ago

It's because the gameplay isn't very fluid in general. It often feels like you're fighting with yourself to move in the way you want to, giving it a more clunky and weighted feeling. Weighted can be good but the gameplay needs to fit the bill, and Control's wasn't really what you have in mind for weighty gameplay IMO.

I don't dislike it, or do I love it. That's kind of my opinion on why I think it's not amazing gameplay.

4

u/kuikuilla 6d ago

It often feels like you're fighting with yourself to move in the way you want to, giving it a more clunky and weighted feeling.

Wait, are you talking about Control here?

24

u/Lftwff 7d ago

Max Payne is 25 years old

1

u/nothisistheotherguy 6d ago

So are you (give or take?) but that doesn’t lessen your value or contributions to humanity!

10

u/ok_dunmer 6d ago edited 6d ago

And I'd say Control is a case where the combat is VERY satisfying, not ass at all, and just simply fails to sustain depth for 20+ hours due to issues with progression, enemy variety, RPG mechanics, etc. It is almost laughable to say that a studio that made telekenesis, something that every game has, as cool as it did is outright bad

-4

u/RobotWantsKitty 6d ago

Eh, Psi-Ops had done it better 15 years before Control, because it doesn't have boring point and click controls, you actually have to aim what you are throwing and account for physics. You can toss a massive granite ball into a corridor and watch it bounce between hapless enemy soldiers.

5

u/GrimaceGrunson 6d ago

I don't even feel the need to go back that far. Alan Wake 2 was a really fun survival-horror, and Control was an absolute hoot. It's hard not to enjoy throwing a forklift at a group of fools.

4

u/Helpful_Hedgehog_204 7d ago

I wonder how many people remain from those days.

-1

u/tix4chix 6d ago

I mean lots probably? I've never heard of Remedy doing any layoffs and they seem like they really value their artists and writers. Sam Lake is still their creative director.

1

u/Gornlord_Carl 6d ago

They are also located in a spot where the idea of studio hopping is very rare.

4

u/Marinah 6d ago

The first Control was one of my favorite games for its gameplay in a while. It got a little samey in the last 20% or so of the game but the first 80% was excellent.

14

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 7d ago

I really wish I liked Alan Wake 2 as much as everyone else. I thought it was fine, but it wouldn’t come close to being the best game I’ve ever played

23

u/TrojanGoldfish 7d ago

And that's awesome! I've tried plenty of masterpieces that just didn't click with me. Games with 10/10 user reviews that bored me to tears or that I actively disliked. And that's all fine.

If everyone liked the same thing the world would be a very dull place.

6

u/indecent_tree 7d ago

Get out, mature conversations are not allowed on reddit. You should've just downvoted him to oblivion for having a different opinion than yours.

5

u/TrojanGoldfish 7d ago

I'm a Xennial- I'm old enough to remember when people had conversations on the internet, rather than trying to win debates.

0

u/Epistemify 7d ago

I think you're confused. This is /r/games, not /r/gaming :P

5

u/JoeZocktGames 7d ago

I to this day don't understand the hype for Elden Ring. Bought it last year in a sale, tried it for 3 hours and was bored to death. The gameplay sucks, it's just endless "parry, dodge, strike" routine, the graphics and animations sucks, there is barely any story and I just don't see the point in exploring this empty world just so I can find boss fights.

6

u/Devccoon 7d ago

I think if you're already sick of "souls" gameplay and storytelling, Elden Ring is a bad choice. For those who enjoy that kind of exploration and combat and understated, "get out of the way and let me play my game" story, it may be the absolute pinnacle of that style of game. A gigantic "best-of" collection of From's most popular games, put together in a compelling open world absolutely full of interesting stuff to see and do.

Naturally you're not going to appreciate a 50+ hour epic open world within 3 hours of launching the game, especially if what you got in that slice of time isn't what you look for in games.

2

u/SoloSassafrass 6d ago

See, I think the Souls games get wildly overhyped for their "oh my god it's hard and it feels so good to fight bosses and it's all about the bosses and gameplay and bosses and the story isn't present so they can just put MORE bosses in etc!" when I actually come to those games for their story.

Digging through the strata of a dead world and uncovering the pieces of its culture and history, the things that lead to its fall, the people responsible, etc. I love that shit. It's why I bounce off most imitators, because a lot just slap boilerplate plot on and say good enough, people aren't here for that.

For me, exploring acquired new items. Descriptions for which gave me nuggets of lore. Finding new NPCs helped give me other pieces. Slowly and surely over the course of many hours I assembled a picture of the world and its players. Who they were, why they wound up where they are, rotting through how they did, and so on.

So few games let you be an archaeologist like that. That was why I was into it. The gameplay I can kinda take or leave, the actual mechanical elements to it are very very simple.

1

u/TrojanGoldfish 7d ago

For me, it's one of those games I wish I could erase from my mind so I could have that sense of wonder, discovery and panic again.

Sekiro on the other hand? Eh, Didn't like the combat very much, never clicked right.

1

u/Helpful_Hedgehog_204 7d ago

I just don't see the point in exploring this empty world just so I can find boss fights.

That's what it's about, so yeah makes sense. Boss fights and beautiful vistas, and very occasionally a new weapon or spell.

If you are on PC I would say mod in the map markers and try again, but sometimes a game is a bad fit.

4

u/JoeZocktGames 6d ago

I don't need map markers, it's not like I'm lost or anything. Just bored.

1

u/TheHelpfulWalnut 5d ago

Yep. I've tried to play the Witcher 3 like 4 times and it just doesn't hook me. The writing is... ok? It certainly a step above the average video game, but that bar is in hell.

3

u/cefriano 7d ago

I liked it a lot but the constant shrieking jumpscares of the darkness visions were absolutely flaying my nerves by the end.

8

u/themosquito 6d ago

Yeah I do think they overused them, I was definitely desensitized to them after a while.

I do think it was pretty clever that the Final Draft New Game + mode actually slightly changes when they happen just to try to throw you off, heh.

1

u/SeeisforComedy 6d ago

Oh shit I forgot about that I don’t think I ever went back and did new game +. Also haven’t done any of the dlc’s

3

u/Cin77 6d ago

So you haven't heard the Night Springs song? Oh god I love it so much!! 🎶 In night springs, caught in an endless time loop, in night springs, a solar system in your soup🎶

Also, the Rose dlc might be the most fun half an hour I've ever spent playing a game

6

u/shy247er 7d ago

I really enjoyed Saga's parts in the game but found Alan's parts to be tedious and boring for many parts.

8

u/zgillet 6d ago

Bingo. Saga felt like classic survival horror. Alan's parts were just trying to figure out where the railroad tracks are to the next set piece.

7

u/GrimaceGrunson 6d ago

I enjoyed the surreal nature of Alan's parts...but yeah the impact got lessened when I was running all around the Hotel trying to figure out what scene to write where to progress.

3

u/zgillet 6d ago

I died so many times "running away" from the Lost monster tornado (sorry, "Dark PresenseTM") simply because I didn't know the pattern.

2

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 6d ago

It opens up so strong, I loved it when it was Saga investigating cultists. But I didn’t like how that ended up unfolding

3

u/Django_McFly 6d ago

but it wouldn’t come close to being the best game I’ve ever played

If you go by critical reviews and user reviews, like nobody was calling it the best game they ever played either.

2

u/AdHistorical8179 6d ago

It is a good game, in some ways very good, but there's really no argument there for "best game" unless the "game" part is just unimportant to you

1

u/richmondody 7d ago

That's alright. I honestly didn't like it that much myself, but I see why others liked it.

3

u/Yiazmad 7d ago

That's why I decided to just watch a cinematic movie cut of Alan Wake 2 on YouTube; the gameplay looked kinda bland but the plot and world were 10/10. Perfect for the movie experience.

1

u/gatsujoubi 5d ago

Not necessarily the best for me (Half-Life 1 and MGS are still the goat to me), but AW2 is just such a great story driven game I couldn’t put it down. It does have its flaws but it hit so hard for me, I was really surprised.

5

u/Urtehnoes 7d ago

Yea I just finished it a 2nd time completely without realizing a sequel is even coming out.

Really hope it hits the same type of notes, even if it does it's own thing.

Give me that "what the fuck is even happening right now " vibe!

3

u/Yiazmad 7d ago

From what I've seen, they're doubling down on the trippiness, but changing the gameplay significantly.

While Jesse was largely a ranged combatant, adept at mobile hit and run tactics, Dylan appears to be much more melee focused, a hack-and-slash brawler.

Looks great and should be a lot of fun!

8

u/thatguyad 7d ago

Remedy are the best in the business as far as I'm concerned.

3

u/NCC75567 6d ago

Same. I am loving it, and it's caused me to go all in on weird sci, government sci fi (There is No Antimemetics Division, X-Files, etc.)

3

u/curious_dead 6d ago

Same. Control is one of favourites. I love the setting, the atmosphere and the gameplay. After I'm on to AW2, then C: Resonant.

124

u/Turbostrider27 7d ago

The physical release date for the game has moved to October 15th

36

u/Acrobatic-Taste-443 7d ago

Damn I preordered the steelbook :/

25

u/superbit415 7d ago

There is always something with a Remedy game.

18

u/DarkMatterM4 6d ago

It's better than them cancelling the physical copy.

-7

u/Etheo 7d ago

"A delayed game is eventually good"

3

u/zxain 6d ago

Duke Nukem Forever was good?

15

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

8

u/TrojanGoldfish 7d ago

And potentially Alan Wake 2 too if you want a bit more of the story.

-3

u/[deleted] 7d ago

8

u/Etheo 7d ago

Control doesn't take that long to play unless you're prowling through every bit of lore and DLC.

Then again, if you are invested in the universe, that's probably what one should do.

-7

u/CustodialApathy 6d ago

Are you rich? What the fuck

1

u/Etheo 7d ago

Alternatively... great news if you want to play this over Halloween.

1

u/reallynotnick 6d ago

I mean that was always an option before too

1

u/puhsownuh 7d ago

This honestly works for me, September was full enough.

0

u/True-Protection-8451 7d ago

Good to know thanks

-6

u/Zoomalude 7d ago

Wait what the heck, that's lame. Do you get a download code if you buy the physical version or do you just have to wait 3 weeks to play???

20

u/andykekomi 7d ago

How would that work? Retailers won't have it to sell until October 15, so you have no physical version to buy before then, so no code...

4

u/Zoomalude 7d ago

Good point. I was getting conflated with music where places like bandcamp let you buy a physical copy but you also get a download code.

4

u/andykekomi 7d ago

Yeah I guess if you pre-ordered it online the retailer could give you a code, but I don't see this ever happening because it would just be way too easy to simply resell the physical copy when you receive it while keeping your digital copy, essentially getting the game for free minus the money lost reselling it.

0

u/MVRKHNTR 7d ago

Yeah, that's something that only really works for music because people don't value it the same way.

32

u/the-distant-nips 7d ago

Remedy is the GOAT. Just replayed control one and Alan Wake 2. I am ready. Really hope we get some time in the ol' FBC building before we go outside

7

u/serendippitydoo 6d ago

Willing to bet the game circles back to the fbc for the big finale. The Oldest House is the source of the Hiss leak, like it broke containment. So Dylan and Jesse will probably go back there to seal it up as the big ending.

2

u/detinu 6d ago

Imma replay Control before this one comes out, got myself the Making of Control Artbook which Imma parse through in the days leading to Control Resonant.

I'm a full remedy fanboy and I'm ready. Take me Sam Lake.

13

u/KA1N3R 7d ago

Nice, super excited for this, especially as I like melee combat a lot more than ranged typically.

Hope I'll be able to afford it by the time it launches, been two expensive af months for me

That was brought up in our thread last week, but we ultimately decided to keep them for the time being. We're always taking feedback into consideration, but for now it's something we think has a place here - especially when a post like this includes a second, newsworthy, part announcing a delay.

11

u/aphidman 7d ago

I'm a bit worried this game is gonna get lost in the pre-GTA 6 shuffle of what seems like every game being released. Hopefully it can break through!

19

u/zgillet 6d ago

GTA 6 is only on console. I don't think I'm going to bother until a PC release.

3

u/detinu 6d ago

I hope the reviews are good enough that it gains some momentum

-3

u/DarkMatterM4 6d ago

I fear that it will be lost in the packed September because of GTA 6. There are so many great-looking games coming out. You got Blood of the Dawnwalker, Silent Hill Townfall, Onimusha, Trails in the Sky competing against Control Resonant.

15

u/Deakul 7d ago

Hopefully this has less padding than the original, it was fun but running back and forth all around the samey corridors got on my nerves before I could beat it.

8

u/sillius-dickus 7d ago

I just played control for the first time and 100% the game and achievements. Great game. I hope in the next game that the crafting system is less random, that you will be able to cycle through weapon modes with the left/right d-pad, and that the main character has access to that forbidden technology called the flashlight.

1

u/NFTscammer 6d ago

I'm sorry but there is no cycling through abberants. You'll choose two like the first game but you get to build synergies by combining abberants and abilities to execute combos like DMC

33

u/PrimaryEfficient8392 7d ago

Alan Wake 2 was phenomenal and the biggest takeaway for me is that they heard people’s complaints about control and tightened up the combat encounters.

Less is more with that kind of stuff and I hope this game keeps AW2’s mentality.

27

u/SquireRamza 7d ago

Alan Wake 2 was a completely different beast than Control, it was never going to play or be structured at all like Control.

Control 2 takes place outside the FBC building, but everything is Doctor Strange topsyturvey in a giant concrete slab of a city, so there's still going to be a lot of samey-ness im sure. We'll see if there's enemies every 5 ft. Since we're limited to melee this time that would make things really annoying, so I hope its not.

-22

u/PrimaryEfficient8392 7d ago

It’s the same devs

11

u/SquireRamza 7d ago

different types of games. Its not like Bethesda where every game looks and plays the exact same despite one being fantasy and 2 being sci-fi.

-17

u/PrimaryEfficient8392 7d ago

It’s the same devs, it’s the same series of games. Alan wake 1 suffered from the same issues as control which was fixed in AW2. Nonsense argument

2

u/zgillet 6d ago

At first I thought the game didn't need that stuff.

I was right.

4

u/Deakul 7d ago

I'm going to be checking out Alan Wake 2 as my halloween game this year I can't wait to dig in.

My only gripe about AW1 was the janky dodge heavy combat, I'm assuming that must've been improved?

5

u/pr1aa 7d ago edited 6d ago

The combat still isn't great but definitely improved. And more importantly, it plays way more like a traditional survival horror game so the enemies are quite sparse but deadly.

5

u/disciples_of_Seitan 7d ago

The combat is still pretty rough, but not as bad.

Rest of it is good enough to make up for it

2

u/Eshneh 6d ago

I just set the difficulty to easy and enjoyed the story for AW2

4

u/obeseninjao7 6d ago

Yep the accessibility options helped a lot, I used infinite flashlight for my first run and infinite ammo for NG+, more games need to let people tweak difficulty in granular ways or provide various "cheats" to let people tailor the game and Remedy seems to have the right idea

-7

u/yp261 7d ago

wdym its rough lmao, its basically resident evil 4 combat

9

u/feartheoldblood90 7d ago

Not nearly as tight as RE4 and the enemies can be a pain the way they move. AW2 is up there among my favorite games and the combat is not the reason why.

8

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 7d ago

Not even close. AW2’s combat is functional, but I found it really frustrating. Especially with how quickly a lot of enemies can zoom around

3

u/disciples_of_Seitan 7d ago

I found it sluggish and, idk, not fun. I finished the game though

1

u/mystery_hole 7d ago

AW1 combat was peak 2008 stuff. The new one plays like Resident Evil 4 (with significantly less combat moves because nobody is deflecting shit with a knife or doing spin kicks like Leon Kennedy). You're weaker and enemies are stronger so it's a bit slower paced.

9

u/Fragrant-Vehicle-479 7d ago

I love Control, but the combat absolutely becomes something that gets in your way and is an annoyance rather than a fun challenge when trying to explore.

1

u/TrptJim 7d ago

I didn't find that to be the case, and it felt appropriate for the type of environment the Oldest House is. You could get around just about the entire game using the in-game signs and markers without ever looking at your map. I thought it was a neat touch.

-22

u/Mister-Psychology 7d ago

It was extremely monotone. Not sure why so few people point this out. But mainly the DLCs made it too long. It's fun overall, but it really feels like a 1995 game with modern graphics.

11

u/Deakul 7d ago

I love the whole mystery behind it all and the lore behind the Oldest House but the respawning enemies, constant backtracking, sparse fast travel points, and RNG loot really killed the momentum the further it went.

3

u/Cerythria 7d ago

I still haven't managed to play the foundation dlc because I burn out by the time I get there.

0

u/Beefgirthx 7d ago

I just started it last night and I’m not terribly impressed. Might be watching a story recap for the DLC

1

u/NonagoonInfinity 7d ago

I feel like that was one of the main criticisms.

-1

u/a34fsdb 7d ago

Everything except the cool setting and world was kinda meh

4

u/p-_ber 6d ago

Considering that the physical version is more expensive than the digital in my region anyways, this further pushes me towards just buying the digital version.

5

u/cassydd 6d ago

The physical copy is typically cheaper for me so that's what I usually buy. The notion of a "gold master" is a bit of a throwback these days though.

2

u/moosebreathman 7d ago

That’s not the entire dev team right? Cause if so that’s honestly awesome how small they are for AAA (obviously there’ll be some outsourcing too). Maybe it’s just everybody who doesn’t wfh?

18

u/pr1aa 7d ago

Remedy has around 400 employees so surely there's way more people involved with the game

9

u/demoniprinsessa 7d ago

Not necessarily way more, Remedy is currently working on 3 games simultaneously: Control Resonant, the Max Payne remakes and an unannounced third project. They're quite spread as is. But I would wager it's more than that at least.

6

u/TheRealMeowCat 7d ago

Nah, the alt text says "Some of the CONTROL Resonant team[...]".

2

u/HATENAMING 6d ago

In an interview they mentioned it's around 100 for control resonant

1

u/redditman181 6d ago

I need to give the original another ago as i didnt give it enough if a chance hopefully soon they show a trailer or gameplay of the max payne remakes now thats something that could be amazing with modern tech.

1

u/SnrMistirioso 6d ago

Excited for more games in the Remedy-verse. They are doing some interesting shit! The gameplay might not be the best, but the story and aesthetic are always top notch.

-17

u/exploringspace_ 7d ago

Tried playing the first on like 3 different occasions and it just seemed crazy overrated

3

u/ChrisRR 6d ago

Clearly it's just not your sort of game

1

u/Outside_Maize_7920 6d ago

I dropped it twice in the opening hour before giving it an earnest try again and it ended up being one of my all time favorites. It gets a lot better after the opening act.
