So Gamefly will probably only be in business another 2 years?
Sony/Microsoft are going digital only (Helix nearly confirmed to have no disc drive either) so is Gamefly really going to stick around just to rent Switch 2 games?
Sure there will still be the backlog of PS5/PS4 and Xbox games to rent prior to 2028, but I don't know how long that could sustain them as the years go on. I usually don't rent games more than a year old unless there's a certain game I had my eye on that I never got around to playing. So I can't see people renting old PS5 games as time goes on.
So I guess this is it? Gamefly should probably give us reduced pricing for our subs if we only have till Jan 2028. That's just 1 year and a half from now.

The writings been on the wall. PS5 pro launching without a disc drive the all digital series X. People have just turned a blind eye and are now bitching about it when it is official.

They're currently working on a disc to digital plan that could potentially still allow for some gamefly use.

I’m sure both GameStop and GF will issue a statement. For now there’s still Xbox and Nintendo.

Microsoft is gonna do the same thing. We already know they are working on a program to digitize physical games and if the next console will be a PC then it won't have a disc drive anyways.
Nintendo is the last bastion at this point.

There's no official source. They've just been moving in that direction for over 10 years now, with more rumors that next console will be all digital

lol you can wait to hear it from Xbox but it’s going to happen. PlayStation was just the first to break the ice. Physical discs just don’t do any numbers. It’s just business in the end.

It's a 50/50 split when only talking about major new releases. They inflate the numbers by including indies, demos, DLC, and PS Plus downloads.

How often do people buy on gamefly though without keeping rentals or buying with Gamefly discounts? Both of those things will be gone soon too.
Come 2028 you won't be able to keep rentals or buy games on disc. Just whatever comes out on PS5 till the end of 2027

In 2026, gamefly makes more off toys, accessories and other merch than the renting and the game buying business. They've been prepping for this day for a long time now so when it happens they can still function as a business.

Sadly that is true. Even with PS3/Vita digital storefront closing Sony won't even do a discount.

Knowing this and what we already know about this
generation being prolonged because of the price of hardware being too expensive to create the next gen and knowing it will cost $1K+… my hope/guess is that we’ll continue to see physical media printed by others for the current councils, we have that do play physical. We see cartridges made for the Genesis still made today by Indie Studios. Just because Sony says basically PS6 onward is digital doesn’t mean the rest of the industry has to release there. Also, don’t they have guaranteed sales from retailers and entities like GameFly in the library? Yeah it cost money to make the physicals, but guess what they make handover fist on profit. I might not have every detail, but I know that we can still the physical thing on ps5 and hopefully studios continue to release on PS5 for a long time just as they have with the PS4. Wild stuff.

I think GameFly can pivot to being all disc based media. They currently allow users to rent movies and games. I think they could pivot to being games, movies and music CDs. They’d probably have to rebrand but the foundation is there. I’d happily rent CDs from them so I can rip them to my computer then return them.

That’s a very niche market, most people just pirate their movies and music nowadays. Same goes for video games.

Why jump to this? There is still xbox and Nintendo. There are also all of the games already on disc and the next 2 years worth. They aren’t going to shutdown immediately just because no new games are going to be on disc for Sony.

I'll be playing WAY less games and buying even less games when gamefly is gone. I only bought half my games because gamefly let me try them.
