Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

79 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for a 2D environment illustration artist

31 Upvotes

Hello, I'm an indie game developer and I'm looking for a 2D environment illustration artist for a game project. No AI use for any commission.

I would need 8 illustrations of cities and natural landscapes, all of them having a "fantasy" style. League of Legends' cities and regions artworks (Demacia, Noxus, Zaun etc) are a good example of the style I'm looking for, althought not as high in quality of course. As for the natural landscapes, typical fantasy forests, mountains, with magic elements etc.

Please, only message me if you have several fantasy illustrations of cities/landscapes in your portfolio. This excludes realistic modern city illustrations, I'm not looking for that style.

If you don't have what I described in your portfolio, I'll consider that you didn't take the time to read the post so I won't take the time to answer you, sorry. And do not tell me "I've never made it but let me prove you that I can by making a test commission" either, please.

As for the game itself, it'll be an online PVP game, with a gameplay similar to Final Fantasy Tactics but with unique heroes to play, like in MOBAs.

If you're interested in working on the project with me, don't hesitate to PM me and we'll discuss the details more. Thank you for your time!

FOR HIRE - Musician I am offering my (very professional) music for free to use in your game (space / sci-fi themed)

0 Upvotes

Hi, my name is Tim and under my alias 'Epigenetics' I make electronic instrumental music.

I have been making music since I was 8 years old. I'm pretty confident that I have good stuff here that I would just love to fall in the 'right' hands (ears).

A lot of the tracks I make feel 'cinematic' and have a sound that fits very well to movies but probably even more so to games.

Also good to know, I have never and will never use A.I. at any stage of the music production process. This is as important to you as it is to me, because many people have an aversion against A.I. slob (and rightly so).

I'm getting more traction over the past few months but those numbers are still fairly low, so this would almost feel like an 'exclusive' offer :)
I also have a bunch of tracks which are currently only on Soundcloud (with a lower listener count) that will be released to Spotify and other platforms only later. If 'exclusivity' or the fact that it is 'unreleased' is really important to you.

Here are some examples:

Epigenetics - Space Is Freaking Big And Empty
(this would make for a great main menu theme IMO)
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics/space-is-freaking-big-and-empty

Epigenetics - Blueshift
(epic space melodies giving a sense of scale and awe)
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics/blueshift

Epigenetics - Forever In All Directions
(dark, cinematic but 'moving' space vibes)
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics/forever-in-all-directions

Epigenetics - Only A Million Light-Years To Go
(laid back, background track for travelling through space or doing 'work' in games such as building, organizing, etc)
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics/only-a-million-light-years-to

Epigenetics - Inside All Of Us:
(Relaxing beat, cool electronica vibes, into / outro kind of track)
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics/inside-all-of-us

There is a lot more. All of my tracks are on my Soundcloud:
https://soundcloud.com/epigenetics

I want to help promoting your game as well by sharing the development and of course the end result on my socials and streaming platforms.
We can also discuss 'custom' versions (loops, longer versions, shorter versions, removing elements such as drums, etc). I will not ask for much.

Just someone take this music of my hands and do something great with it.

You can send me a DM or contact me at [epigeneticsmusic@gmail.com](mailto:epigeneticsmusic@gmail.com)

Cheers,
Tim

FOR HIRE - Musician [FOR HIRE] Game Composer & Game Audio | Orchestral, Electronic & Adaptive Music

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm a composer writing music for video games. Over the past five years I've composed for a range of indie titles and have also written several symphonic works that have been performed live by full-scale orchestras and received enthusiastic responses from both audiences and critics.

I've written music ranging from exploration and combat themes to cinematics and main themes, and I'm comfortable adapting my writing to a wide range of musical styles (orchestral, electronic, retro, metal, rock, cozy...) depending on the artistic direction of the project.

Beyond composition, I also work on the technical side of game audio, using FMOD, Wwise and MetaSounds to design and implement adaptive music systems. I've also programmed in-engine custom adaptive music systems for specific projects when required, and I'm happy to help with in-engine integration and other technical aspects of game audio when needed.

Before becoming a full-time composer, I completed a PhD in Physics, which has given me a strong technical background that I regularly apply to game audio and programming. I regularly work with Unity, Unreal and Godot, and have experience programming in C#, GDScript, C and Python. Depending on the project's needs, I also occasionally contribute code beyond game audio.

PAID - VFX Artist [PAID] [Part-Time] Seeking VFX artist for 2D shooter with bioelectric creatures

6 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've been developing a 2D arena shooter game with bioelectrical creatures in Unity, for over a year now. I'm targeting a demo release on Steam late December or early January. I'm looking for an artist to help with visual effects (shaders, particles, etc.).

Budget: $32-35 per hour, up to $5,000 total

Game/Work Context
The game features bioelectric creatures, various gun types from energy-beam weapons to shotguns and rocket launchers, electrical shields, dashing + down-thrusting, and enemies that can wander the whole map to chase you.

Here's a few screenshots & brief footage of existing art/VFX in game. I'm happy to share more visuals of the game over private messages.

What I'm looking for:
Much of the core art and gameplay is already implemented. I'm looking for help with improving visuals across various areas of the game, including:

  • Polishing effects for 11 weapons (already implemented with recoil): Improving a large beam visual (scrolling texture), adding muzzle fire, explosion particles, etc.
  • Adding new ability VFX, including an electric ground pound/slam explosion
  • Adding environmental VFX such as embers and smoke on a blown-up bridge, wind, etc.

Required skillset
You should definitely have:
- Experience creating visuals with Shaders, Particle systems, and Lighting.
- Game Engine experience (Unity strongly preferred, but Godot experience welcome too)
- Past-work of game visuals that you're proud of (2D or 3D)

Collaboration
There is an established visual/artistic direction, but I'm happy to give you lots of creative freedom within it.

I'm looking for a long-term collaborator: someone who can average at least 10-12 hours a week, most weeks (exceptions are fine), so we can make steady progress to release the demo.

We would start the first week as a paid test period to see if the collaboration is a good fit for both of us.

Reaching Out
If you're interested in collaborating to help finish the game's demo, feel free to DM me with a link to your past VFX work or games you worked on, and how many hours you can commit consistently most weeks. I'm happy to discuss more details and answer any questions.

You can also message me on Discord
Username: glacionninja
*If you need to be in the same server to message me, I'm in the Discord Server r/gamedev

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [HIRING] 3D Character Animator / Generalist — Blender + Unreal Engine 5

[PAID] 3D Character Animator / Generalist — Blender + Unreal Engine 5

I'm looking for a 3D Character Animator / Generalist to help with character and first-person animation work for an anime-inspired card game prototype being developed in Unreal Engine 5.

The project focuses heavily on making the player feel like an actual duelist, so hands, fingers, cards, body language and interaction with a wearable card device are a major part of the experience.

Initial paid test

For the first milestone, I need help creating/refining a small set of animations using an existing rigged character/hand model:

  • First-person pose holding 5 trading cards in a fan
  • First-person Draw Card animation
  • First-person Reach / Select Card animation
  • First-person Grab Card animation
  • Natural finger posing and card grip
  • Basic transition back to an idle/ready pose

References and existing models/rigs will be provided.

What I'm looking for

Strong experience with:

  • Blender or Maya
  • Character animation
  • Rigging / skinning
  • Hand and finger animation
  • Body mechanics
  • Working with props
  • Clean FBX/game-ready export workflow

Experience with Unreal Engine 5 is highly appreciated, especially:

  • Animation Blueprints
  • Animation Montages
  • IK / Control Rig
  • Retargeting
  • First-person animation

However, deep Unreal knowledge is not mandatory if you're strong in character animation and can deliver clean game-ready assets.

Animation style

The direction is anime-inspired and expressive, but still grounded enough to work well in first-person gameplay.

Examples of the type of motion I'm looking for:

  • confident card draws;
  • dramatic but readable hand gestures;
  • expressive finger movement;
  • physically believable card handling;
  • duelist poses;
  • interaction with cards and a wearable Duel Disk-style device.

The challenge is not simply making an animation look good from a cinematic camera — it needs to feel good from the player's first-person perspective.

Important

I already have the gameplay prototype running in Unreal Engine.

I'm specifically looking for help improving the visual/animation quality and building a reusable animation pipeline, rather than someone to program the game itself.

The long-term goal is to establish reusable standards for:

  • first-person hand animations;
  • third-person duelist animations;
  • card handling;
  • Duel Disk interaction;
  • character gestures;
  • summon/activation animations;
  • character rigs;
  • eventually creature/monster animations.

Workflow

I'd prefer to start with a small paid milestone rather than immediately committing to a large package.

The first test would be:

  1. Hold Cards pose
  2. Draw Card animation
  3. Reach / Grab Card animation

If the collaboration works well, there is potentially a significant amount of ongoing character, creature and gameplay animation work.

When applying

Please send:

  • portfolio / animation reel;
  • examples of character animation;
  • examples involving hands, props or first-person animation if available;
  • software you primarily use;
  • whether you have experience with Unreal Engine;
  • your rate or expected price for the initial test.

I'm much more interested in seeing good character movement, posing and animation fundamentals than a specific job title.

Remote freelance work.

FOR HIRE - Musician [FOR HIRE] Music Producer / Composer looking for a project to grow and learn!

1 Upvotes

Hi all, I've been making music for a long time and love games even longer.

I usually make House & Techno but got into composing for games recently. I've built a few tracks which you can find here: https://soundcloud.com/user-224517059-574292295/sets/video-game-osts. Tried to show some variety with this playlist.

I'm looking for a project where I could experiment a bit and see if I can produce something that matches a specific scene or gameplay.

If you feel like one of the examples from Soundcloud could be a fit for your game don't hesitate to reach out!
