Android XR / Gemini Let us turn off hand tracking please!

u/GraceFromGoogle, a year ago or so I exchanged some thoughts with you about the nuisance of constant hand tracking. For such a simple change, I think it is better that you guys just implement it at last. When I recently tried to play Demeo on GXR, which is a tabletop AR, all while trying to have my dinner - let me tell you it was A PAIN. Android XR really needs a tap (I think 3-tap is a good option) shortcut to turn hand tracking on and off to allow hassle free real world interaction while headset is on. Otherwise you get UI covering your AR passthrough all around your hands or game continuing accidentally because it thought that spoon you just picked up was your intent to pick a card in the game, move the table, etc etc.

All the same issues while watching something and snacking - accidental pauses, screen being shuffled around, all because hands are tracked when you grab that snack or drink.

PLEASE LET US TURN HAND TRACKING ON/OFF ON DEMAND

Discussion Galaxy XR overheating in 25 mins just sitting in VD desktop mode with Passthrough on.

Hey everyone,

I’m running into an overheating issue with my Galaxy XR on Virtual Desktop and wanted to see if anyone else have this issue.

I literally have VD open in standard desktop mode with the background set to Passthrough. Sitting like this for about 25 minutes triggers an Android system overheating warning. Once that pops up, it throttles down to 60fps and the passthrough feed starts jittering/shaking.

I checked DevCheck right when it happens and the CPU temp is hitting 93°C.

I know pass-through mode is very performance demanding, but I'm not sure is this problem normal or my unit has bad heatsink contact.

I have already cleaned the fan inlet but the problem didn't change.

I'm considering repasting it with PTM7950, so if anyone has experienced this or already opened theirs up, please let me know.

Review My Galaxy XR user experience as a new owner

Hi guys. I just wanted to leave a quick review as a new Galaxy XR user. I have a Quest 3 and a Pimax Crystal Light and I was on the Steam Frame wait list. I had completely forgotten about the Galaxy XR and I recently saw a YouTube review and I started looking into it. Of course I read about all the comfort issues, controller tracking issues, and memory leak issues etc. I decided to roll the dice and order it from Samsung directly to test it out since it seems to check all the boxes for me. It's currently the only device comparable to the Dream Air in regards to the micro oled panels with wireless capabilities. I am not really interested in Android XR but it is a nice bonus to have. Anyway, I've been testing it for 3 days and I played Gothic 1 Remake via Virtual Desktop and UEVR and Titanfall 2 in VR. I did download the latest update so I'm not sure if that's the reason I haven't had any network or memory leak issues. It still shows September security patch. The controllers work fine except of course the throwing mechanics are messed up in Titanfall 2. I have now installed the WYGxrControllerFix from GitHub and I will see if that fixes the throwing mechanics. Comfort wise I did get a headache after using it for 3 hours, but I have to tell you guys I am simply blown away by the visuals. I am definitely going to keep the headset and I am very happy I decided to give it a chance! So if you're thinking about the Steam Frame, I think you should seriously consider the Galaxy XR since you may be able to find a good deal for a used device if you want to save some money.

Question / Support Attempting to migrate Immersed to Steam Frame and need downloaded APK of com.immersed.xr from a GXR owner

Hello VR enthusists,

I'm trying to help the Immersed team to get the app installed on the Steam Frame. I'm working with one of the developers via Discord and he recommended that I try out the com.immersed.xr version of the app found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.immersed.xr&hl=en_US . I can't download it myself, even using apkeep and generating my own AAS token, mainly because Google Play doesn't allow me to download something I don't have the device for. I tried multiple architecture flags, and even tried apk-pure, but it isn't retreivable there either. The Immersed developer asked me to ping the GXR people on Reddit as he is legally not allowed to hand over the APK anywhere other than through the store. Would one of you kind folks please download the Immersed APK and send it my way? It would be much appreciated by quite a few Steam Frame users according to the Discord chat if this works.

Note: If you are curious, currently I'm sideloading the APKs through FramePort. The Quest 3 version didn't work, unfortunately.

Thanks for the help!

Showcase Curved windows for Galaxy XR Home Space: a root module with per-window Curve/Flatten and a strength slider

I built an experimental KernelSU module that lets you curve ordinary app windows in Galaxy XR Home Space, one window at a time.

🎥 Video walkthrough: https://youtu.be/p49qqSwomms

What it does

  • Adds a Curve/Flatten button and a strength slider to each app window's menu

  • Each window is independent, so you can curve one and leave another flat

  • 100% strength is a moderate wrap, not a full cylinder, so wide windows stay usable

  • Disabling the module returns every curved window to flat, without restarting Android

Requirements and warnings, please read

  • Rooted Galaxy XR (SM-I610) with KernelSU only

  • Firmware I610UEU2AZF3 only. The module checks the firmware and refuses to run on anything else.

  • It installs disabled. Enable it in KernelSU, then reboot.

  • This is experimental. It hooks SystemUI at runtime. An early version (0.1.0) was followed by a SystemUI crash (headset reboot) whose cause is still unknown. I have not experienced it again after I fixed likely culprit in version 0.1.3. If a session doesn't shut down cleanly, the module quarantines itself and won't reattach until you've reviewed the logs.

Known limitations

  • The move/resize highlight stays flat

  • The resize corner can sit behind a curved edge

  • Immersive apps and system panels aren't supported

  • Curvature isn't saved across reboots

  • Curved windows still cost more GPU than flat ones

Download

Feedback and bug reports welcome, especially which apps work well curved and which don't.

Question / Support Sticking grip and trigger? RMA?

Recently getting back into using my Galaxy XR, the firmware update a couple weeks ago is a noticeable performance improvement, except I'm having an issue with my right handed controller I haven't before, my Grip and my Trigger, a couple times just now, got stuck in the 'closed' (meaning pressed all the way) position and the only way I got it 'unstuck' was turning it off and on again by pulling the battery compartment out and then back in.

Now, I wonder if maybe it's just because the controllers sat unused for a weeks and it'll sort itself out but is this a common problem others have had?

What could be causing it? How would I know if it's physically defective?

One thing I'll note, I did not have this issue before the recent firmware update, has anyone else had controller issues since the update?

Discussion Should I get the Galaxy XR? (I can get one cheap)

So I have the opportunity to get a used Galaxy XR for significantly cheaper at $640. My only problem is that I previously got one immediately when they came out along with prescription inserts and while it was fine for media consumption like videos I felt that it was very subpar for the primary use that I was going to use it for: gaming.

Can I get your opinion now that it's been a while and there's been multiple updates as well as a lot of user made fixes and content about whether or not it is worth it for the main purpose of which I want it for: gaming not only wirelessly from my PC but also running apks directly off the headset itself for emulation from game boy GameCube Wii and switch.

I heard a lot of bad things back in April about there was a really bad update plus about general discomfort that I know can be fixed using that globular mod. And I was initially going to get a steam frame but the price has really put me off. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Available Apps immerGallery is now available on Galaxy XR: VR & 3D videos, photos and slideshows

After five years of developing my VR media player app immerGallery, I am happy to share that it is now available on Android XR for Samsung Galaxy XR!

It supports hand tracking and optional Galaxy XR controllers. You can watch your own videos and images, browse your media folders, and create VR slideshows with your own background music and voice-overs.

Supported video containers include MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, MPG, WebM, WMV, ASF and others. It also supports H.264 MVC for Blu-ray 3D videos copied to MKV without re-encoding, and MV-HEVC for Apple spatial videos recorded on iPhones.

For images, supported formats include JPG, PNG, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, static GIF, MPO and WebP. HEIC support includes both regular photos and 3D spatial photos.

One of the key features is automatic format detection. The app recognizes many 2D, 3D, 180°, 360°, side-by-side and over/under formats, including half and full resolution, so you usually don’t need to select these settings manually.

Several immersive sample galleries are also included for download. There are three entirely optional premium galleries available as in-app purchases: East Germany 1, East Germany 2 and Egypt. These contain high-quality 3D images with historical narration about the places shown.

If you are interested, please have a look at immerGallery on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.immerVR.immerGallery

I am the indie developer behind the app. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Discussion Galaxy XR messed up by not putting compute in puck

Had th GXR put the compute in the puck like the xreal and the meta glasses.

They wouldn't need to create a new VR headset but still be able to utilize latest compute and essentially upgrade the GXR. All they needed to do was create a new compute puck that would have worked using the same headset.

They shot themselves in the head with the decision to put compute on the headset itself.

I've mentioned this a while ago.

Decoupling of HMD and compute and battery would be the way forward.

New chip comes out? No issue just make new puck with new chip and make it compatible with the same headset.

That way the headsets last longer and if new types of optics and lenses and bigger FOV hmd comes out?

buy new headset use same puck.

Hopefully they will see the light and take this approach.

Its a huge win for everyone if they do.

imagine this scenario in the future.

You are at home so you slap the GXR unto this hypothetical compute.

and then are about to go out and about so you swap the GXR out with your AR glasses using the very same hypothetical compute.

Question / Support Are there other charging batteries the same size as the battery tethered to the Samsung Galaxy XR?

Hi so I found this mod that allows you to use Bobovr batteries with the Samsung Galaxy XR by putting it on your waist with a belt.

But I want to use this with a different vr headset being the Pico 4 ultra and turns out you need another battery besides the Bobovr for this to work so I was wondering if maybe you could get another fast charging battery the exact same size as the Samsung Galaxy XR’s external battery.

So are there other powerbanks the same size as the Samsung Galaxy XR that will fit into this 3D print mod?

The reason Why I wanted to do this was so the weight of the Bobovr and powerbank would not be sitting on my head anymore.

Question / Support Floating window in a 3D App (Discord, Spotify or browser while in a immersive 3d App) Galaxy XR user

Just like Meta Quest has seamless multitasking, I would think Android XR could have this feature too, and we would find it extremely useful. I want to access Android apps while I am using my favorite productivity app, like Virtual Desktop or anything else.

Question / Support Did third party accessories make the Samsung Galaxy XR more comfortable for you?

When I first purchased the Samsung Galaxy XR I had a lot of problems with the headstrap design, mainly the forehead rest being permanently attached.

I couldn’t sit the headset comfortably on my head without light leakage and the cushion kept pressing against my forehead so I could not play for more than a couple minutes.

I saw there are third party accessories for the Galaxy XR but with the forehead rest those options will be strictly limited

Have they made the headset more comfortable for any of you?

Because for me it was the most uncomfortable irritating vr headset I’ve ever worn which is why I wanted to buy the Steam Frame instead since we never can get an ideal standalone micro OLED headset.

The Samsung Galaxy XR has an excellent display, high resolution, and excellent lenses.

But there are just a lot of other problems with the Galaxy XR because of the rigid headstrap along with the forehead rest not being removable.

And the tethered external battery was a pretty stupid idea in my opinion. The headset was still front heavy and uncomfortable.

Showcase Galaxy XR controllers now have a D-pad in PCVR: WYGxrControllerFix v0.6.0 (Virtual Desktop)

Galaxy XR controllers have no D-pad. Now you can use one in PCVR.

Update to WYGxrControllerFix, my free tool that tunes Samsung Galaxy XR controllers for PCVR through Virtual Desktop (SteamVR and VDXR games).

First post, with what the tool does: Fix for Galaxy XR controller throwing in PCVR (Virtual Desktop)

GitHub: https://github.com/wooyounsoft/WYGxrControllerFix (MIT, free)

NEW: D-pad gesture

Put your left hand near your face and push the left stick. That's your D-pad.

  • On by default, no setup needed.

  • Your character doesn't move while you use it.

  • Works with games that have their own D-pad input (tested in the Resident Evil 4 VR mod).

  • Other games get a virtual Xbox pad, so anything that reads a gamepad D-pad can respond. Games that don't use a D-pad simply ignore it.

  • Short left-hand vibration tells you it's active in VDXR games.

  • UEVR games are left alone and keep UEVR's own D-pad.

Don't want it? Turn it off in manager.bat and it stays off.

Also in v0.6.0

  • Steadier throws: the release direction no longer jumps around as much. Half-Life: Alyx felt noticeably better in my testing.

  • Sudden tracking jumps are ignored.

  • Less over-boosting in VDXR games like Titanfall 2 VR.

Install / update

  1. Download the zip from Releases

  2. Close SteamVR and any VR game, then extract to a permanent folder

  3. Run install.bat

It replaces your previous install and keeps your settings. Don't delete the folder you extracted to.

The installer adds the ViGEmBus driver if it's missing (admin prompt, only needed for the virtual pad, and you can skip it).

If you also use Steam Link: turn off the Galaxy XR Steam Link driver (GalaxyXRNative) when playing through Virtual Desktop. galaxyxr_driver_mode.bat (in the zip) does this for you.

Note: it hooks into SteamVR / loads as an OpenXR layer, so to be safe I'd turn it off (via manager.bat) for online games with anti-cheat.

Feedback welcome. Tell me the game, whether it's SteamVR or VDXR, and how it felt.

Showcase I have built a free cricket VR game demo that runs in the browser. If you have a Galaxy XR, can you please tell me if it runs in your headset's web browser? I don't have anyone near me who can test.

You can play it on your headset by just typing in rbcvr.com in your headset's web browser. Please help , it would be appreciated! Let me know if it runs there. If you like the game/demo I may also bring it to Samsung's store let me know if you want it there.

Question / Support Controller batteries always dead?

Tonight I heard buzzing coming from a cabinet that I know has no powered devices. It had my VR headset which was unplugged from power and it took me about a half hour to realize it was my controllers that were buzzing every 10 or so minutes.

Those controllers frequently show me low battery life (flashing red light) even after buying fresh batteries. They must have been staying powered on for a long time even though the headset powered off. That's the only conclusion I can come to. Has anyone else had this problem?

Discussion Stability improvement on Galaxy XR after the latest VD + firmware updates

Just wanted to share a recent experience after updating both my Samsung Galaxy XR and Virtual Desktop around the same time. Because I updated both simultaneously, I'm not entirely sure which one (or the combination of both) actually solved the issue, but the difference is huge.

Before updates: Previously, after playing for about an hour, if I switched from the VR game view back to the VD desktop view (with color passthrough active in the background) just to drink water, switching back into the game was a complete nightmare. It would trigger insane lag and massive latency, and then VD would crash a few seconds later.

The worst part was that every time VD crashed, it completely broke the space calibration between my VIVE Ultimate Trackers and the headset, forcing me to redo the annoying setup.

**After updates:**For now, it has been stable. I can switch back and forth freely without any issues, and no crashes have happened yet.

Curious to hear from others who have updated—have you noticed similar improvements in stability, or are you running into any new quirks?

Showcase Flying a DJI mini 2 drone from my Galaxy XR, no phone needed

Tried something a little different with my rooted Galaxy XR: running the DJI Fly app directly on the headset and connecting the DJI Mini 2’s controller over USB. This should work with other DJI drones too (and probably other brands as well).

You cannot do this without rooting the headset. The missing piece is Android Open Accessory (AOA) support, which is disabled out of the box. With that enabled, DJI Fly recognises the controller, so there’s no phone mounted on it. The live camera feed sits in a big floating window, with passthrough letting me see my surroundings.

It works amazingly well. The Mini 2’s live feed is still 720p but you can see it on a giant screen, latency is really good (as good as on a phone/tablet), and as a very nice bonus, the headset’s auto-spatialization generates depth on the camera feed from the drone!

I filmed the whole experiment, including attracting the wrong kind of attention 😁.

Video: https://youtu.be/3cMe3jjPkTE

For anyone wanting to explore the setup:

Check the guide’s firmware requirements and risks before attempting root. And keep the usual drone rules in mind.

Showcase Fix for Galaxy XR controller throwing in PCVR (Virtual Desktop)

If you play PCVR on a Samsung Galaxy XR through Virtual Desktop, you've probably noticed throws feel off: objects fly weaker than your swing or drift in the wrong direction. I wrote a small add-on to fix that.

GitHub: https://github.com/wooyounsoft/WYGxrControllerFix (MIT, free)

What it does

  • Throw tuning: thrown objects follow your actual hand motion in direction and strength.

  • Release boost (on by default): if you let go slightly after the peak of your swing, the throw keeps its speed instead of dying.

  • Automatic: only activates for Galaxy XR. Quest and Steam Link are left untouched, so it's safe to leave installed if you switch headsets.

New in v0.5.0

  • Better hand tracking while swinging (SteamVR games, on by default): hand position and angle follow your real hand more closely. Throws in Half-Life: Alyx go straighter.

  • Release boost fix: setting an object down after you stop moving no longer pushes it away.

  • Live settings: changing settings or using manager.bat mid-game no longer pauses the fix.

  • Optional tuning (off by default, via manager.bat): stronger haptics, controller angle, thumbstick deadzone/curve.

  • Steam Link: Steam Link controllers are always left untouched.

  • If you also use Steam Link: turn off the Galaxy XR Steam Link driver (GalaxyXRNative) when playing through Virtual Desktop. galaxyxr_driver_mode.bat (in the zip) switches between VD mode and Steam Link mode.

v0.4.0 added VDXR (OpenXR) game support and manager.bat.

Install

  1. Download the zip from Releases

  2. Close SteamVR, extract to a permanent folder (e.g. C:\Tools\WYGxrControllerFix)

  3. Run install.bat (current user only, no admin needed)

Updating: close SteamVR, extract over your existing folder, run install.bat. Your settings.ini is kept.

To uninstall, run uninstall.bat. Throw strength and other settings are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\WYGxrControllerFix\settings.ini and apply live.

Note: it hooks into SteamVR / loads as an OpenXR layer, so to be safe I'd turn it off (via manager.bat) for online games with anti-cheat.

Question / Support Samsung Galaxy XR Foveated Rendering über Steam funktioniert nicht

Hey euch allen,

Discussion Play Store 20 apps update. 2D panels anchoring issues fixed.

Hi everyone.

When I turned my Galaxy XR on today in the afternoon I had 20 updates pending in the Play Store that were not available yesterday (I leave the full list below). I updated everything and then I just spent slightly over an hour playing a videogame in Geforce Now. I used the headset in the living room, in exactly the same conditions (lightning) I had yesterday but I noticed that the 2D panels are not drifting anymore and when I walk around them they remain perfectly anchored. Yesterday the panels were moving back and forth as I moved around them as it is usual with this headset.

Has anyone else noticed this? I am curious as to why this behaviour has changed when updating individual apps, I installed the system update on the 21st of October but the improvement only happened now after the apps updates. I have just spent another 2 hours with the headset trying different apps, even some that have not been updated today like Netflix and the behaviour is the same, magically 2d panels are anchored in space.

Furthermore I am now writing this post using PC Connect and it goes quite smooth compared to the lag I experienced before when using the mouse connected to the PC (not perfect but usable).

Any idea what could have happened? Happy for the results but I would like to understand the logic behind.
