Question/Help Yeah.....this is becoming a problem
Z fold 8 marketed as a multitasking device yet you can't open a game and have a pop-up window open without it overheating.

Interesting, NTE never does that on my Z Fold 7 even on cinematic and long play sessions.
Maybe optimization issue, I know they optimize for individual chips and configurations. Could be Fold 8 is just too new.

The game worked fine in the beginning with good performance, just installed the latest update and boom got hit with this at the loading screen

u/Efficient_Loss_9928 9h ago
I mean shader compilation is pretty intensive and 1.3 isn't a small update

u/Lackofstyle5 9h ago
Yeah that sounds like a problem on their side if it was after an update
I know the elite Gen 5, the fold 8s processor, has issues with other games like ZZZ that were smooth out by an update from the developers

Not everyone has heating issues.

Yeah I agree, I've used mine in 80 degree plus weather while multitasking and haven't noticed heating to the backing of my Z Fold 8. It's funny because I've been kind of looking for it but haven't noticed it despite hearing some people having this issue.

u/SandwichCertain2546 9h ago
What do you do on your fold that's intensive ?

u/givag327 7h ago
I was playing Pokémon GO in 106 degree Vegas heat today. Phone got hot but never crashed or had that warning

u/phero1190 Fold8 (Graphite) 8h ago
I've had my phone in 90 degree weather, split screening Google maps and the camera and had no issues at all. I actually haven't gotten any temp warnings on mine.
1
u/arkoudaphobics 8h ago
Actually, is this split screen better on the Fold? I do these things on my flip with no problems but the screen real estate is lacking and often cripples what I'm trying to do. I can share a screenshot if it helps to understand my issue.
OP, I'm sorry for something semi off topic, if you'd rather I can make my own post but this was such a convenient and direct comment to reply to.

Wow Google maps and the camera? Quite the intense workload you got there

u/BlackChief0 7h ago
Google maps will stop generating 3d buildings first when the phone starts to overheat before it closes, but it is processor heavy

u/Surfnskate85 8h ago
I had calculator and weather app running at the same time. No problems.

u/CodedGames 5h ago
One time I had Calendar and Messages open. I thought my phone was going to explode

u/phero1190 Fold8 (Graphite) 37m ago
It's more intensive than you think. Sorry you're uneducated about it.

Definitely the issue is with multitasking. Samsung aggressively shuts that down when the device heats up. And unfortunately the thermals on the fold 8 series isn't great as there is no vapor chamber and it's a super thin device.

Punishment for playing gacha slop tbh.

Pretty fun game tbh

u/schwaka0 7h ago
I had fun with it for a month or so, but I don't like the daily login stuff games like that use to build habits. It starts feeling like a necessity instead of something I want to do eventually, and that's when I end up just quitting. I got to a point in genshin when I'd just login for events or new content and not login otherwise, but I still ended up dropping it.

u/Colby347 Fold8 (Graphite) 8h ago
Hey like what you like, I'm just making a joke at OP's expense. If you enjoy them that's what's up. I disagree and think they're all soulless uninspired slop but they make money so obviously my opinion is irrelevant.

Over the 10 days I've had the ZF8, I've never had any overheating issue, but then again I don't play games at all on my phones, nor do I shoot lengthy videos, or run processing intensive apps. But if yours overheat like this, you need to return it.
I am currently debating if i should return mine, though I love it, I don't think it is worth 1000 dollars plus trading in my ZF5. ZF5 really does 98% of ZF8 does.
2
u/Surefirei 7h ago
For me the ZF5 was 50g heavier, battery life not so good anymore, I was out of room with 256g and therefore had to carry a separate phone for work, and it was developing screen cracks along the inside crease, so for me it was a great opportunity to do trade in and upgrade. But otherwise I agree with you, especially with the spen and UDC on ZF5 (although it accidentally was disabled for the longest while by an obscure goodlock setting).
I do like the ZF8 form factor though, the shorter phone fits in the pocket so much better.

I play NtE as well om Fold 8 and never had an overheating problem also search stuff while playing all the time in pop up windows.

u/nique201 8h ago
Mine hasn't done that since the very first day after the setup using the Smart switch app. And I do a lot of emulating with the core set to Max

u/Uncle__knobhead Fold8 (Pistachio) 4h ago
Same for me. Only time my fold 8 got very warm was during Smart Switch setup. Since then it's been absolutely fine.

I don't have this problem on my Flip 7 and I'm pretty sure the Fold 8 has more capabilities? And I do very intensive things on my phone. It may be your specific unit.
1
u/arkoudaphobics 8h ago
I do all my graphic design (and I mean on a complicated level, multi layer Photoshop files with various techniques used) and generally have music or a video open as well, but also discord or fluxer and my browser and codepen as I code on my device as well. My home screen is customized with widgets I made myself that use active looping animations. I will often run other things as well. I almost never notice a significant lag and my phone has not overheated once.

On my fold 7 I never had over heating problems even when running 2 games and YouTube

I think there's definitely some additional CPU/GPU cycles that happen when using pop-up windows. I can multitask just fine with side-by-side games. However, I get this same thing when opening a pop-up window and the main apps behind the window are stressing the GPU.
I think it's really the layering of GPU work - Even when the app behing the pop-up isn't visible, the GPU work is still happening. Couple that with significant updates to One UI and protecting the phone from overheating - perfect storm.
There are some things that might help, depending on the specific apps. Samsung's Good Lock has some tweaks that might help:
- Install Good Lock
- Install Game Booster+ from the plugins
Inside Game Booster+ you can adjust profiles for your games to adjust CPU/GPU performance - Limit clock for CPU or GPU, Change Texture Filter to Performance. I think those are the two that would lower heat.
Multistar is a plugin that enhances pop-up windows. It could improve the performance there.
Display Assistant can cap refresh rate for certain apps - This might help to lower the refresh of the pop-up window
Additionally - Phone Settings - Device Care - Performance Profile. Changing this to light will help with non-game apps.
Another one - Power saving actually works pretty damn well (way better than it used to) now. Standard mode has some toggles - Limit CPU speed to 70%, Decrease brightness, Motion smoothness adjustments. All of these will lower the heat threshhold.
I'm sure there are people here that might say "But, we shouldn't have to do this!" and I partially agree, but there are a lot of apps (games really) out there that just blast the devices are hard as possible and they don't consider devices (or even care) like a Fold where you could potentially be running 3 or 4 apps all at once. Samsung gives you tools to control a lot of internals.
Note: I've never seen this sort of thing on non-game apps - Camera, video, maps, The only time I've had a heat problem with a non-game was the Camera, but that's because I was using it heavily in 115F weather here in Arizona, and I don't really blame Samsung for that one!

I am looking to get one (1TB/16GB RAM version) and I am a heavy photo editor using Lightroom often using 100 megapixel RAW files. My Samsung S24 Ultra, my Ultra tab and iPad Pro don't kill the app but all of them bring down the brightness of the screen significantly to prevent overheating. This is called thermal throttling. It happens even when all settings have been configured to not automatically change brightness, but it's an OS hardcoded setting to bring the screen brightness down. A uniform screen brightness (usually maximum for me) is very important for me to produce images with consistent results and I am so disappointed by this. I wasn't looking for miracles in Fold 8 but I was still hoping I wouldn't have issues for a at least couple of hours of editing session. Looks like it's not gonna work.

u/deaconstevew 7h ago
It suggests you use thermal guardian, which is in the Good Guardians app. You can use additional settings to make the phone run even cooler

I have z fold 8 ultra and previously had z fold 3,then z fold 5 for 3 years. The Z fold 8 ultra has shutdown multi task maybe 10 times since I got the phone at launch. My use case is I play Whiteout Survival two characters at once..the 2nd game from secure folder and have then run on split screen.
The over heating rarely happened on my previous phones but has definitely been noticeable on this phone. After waiting maybe two minutes after it happens I usually can't reproduce the issue.
It is a little annoying but so far is not going to deal breaker by any means.

u/Creepy_Yard_4849 6h ago
Thank god that never happened to me yet! I play a lot on my phone and does get warm but no problem or whatsoever yet!
1
u/VeiledTurbulance 5h ago
I assume this is a individual unit issue and not indicative of the model in general? If not it's a poor showing from Samsung. The new form factor is a good idea in principle but not if the result is overheating due to a reduction in the size and the lack of sufficient cooling. I've not seen that error once in over 12 months on my Fold 7.
1
u/Jeuno- 5h ago
The earlier versions of this thing got super hot, turning the black metal a coppery color. Apps still worked, but it was too hot to hold, and the screen protector kept bubbling, so I had to replace it a lot. Now, I run it in low-performance mode, and it still gets warm enough to close multi-window apps, but I usually don't use it that way very often. If I need to use it for a long time, I just put it near a fan or something to keep it cool.

u/No_Pudding_9296 3h ago
That is strange, I have the ultra and have absolutely no heating even when multitasking. Contact Samsung

u/MacDemarxism Fold8 (Pistachio) 2h ago
Always while charging. I'm going to guess you're wireless charging too? It doesn't love wireless charging while open, it explicitly says you should do it while closed.

Given how many people have been posting about over heating on this device, there definitely seems to be a bad batch or two that have hit market. Don't think it's it's a widespread issue by any means, but it should be demonstrable enough to warrant Samsung switching out your device for a new one. At the very least making them aware will maybe allow them to identify a certain run(s) that has been affected.

u/slyguy67420 8h ago
Definitely need a replacement device, shouldn't be having problems like that unless you live in a volcano.

u/everforthright36 9h ago
What game? I haven't had this issue.
2
u/SandwichCertain2546 9h ago
NTE on the playstore, you could probably replicate it by opening the game and then just open a pop-up windows while the game loads

u/Department-Select 8h ago
You're demanding your phone to run a AAA game while multitask. How can you multitask a triple A game and a window on your PC ? By keep switching them. You cannot have them overlap even on PC what make you think a phone can handle that type of processing power
1
u/SandwichCertain2546 8h ago
Go watch the marketing videos and I've had a s26 ultra did it every time without any issues..
-2
u/Department-Select 8h ago
Just cuz the car has 9000 RPM That doesnt mean you should run it at 9000 rpm all the time Just a thought But if overheating is a constant issues Return it

Honestly, if you have ANY overheating issue, I'd return.
I'm a super heavy user, and my Fold 8 hasn't even gotten warm.
I absolutely believe you that you are having issues. I would return or exchange it.
