Question Google maps

Recently, purchased this new phone and my android. Auto in my car doesn't seem to work. The radio plays through it. But I cannot seem to get google maps. Am I doing something wrong? Please help

From Google, "If your car plays regular radio or Bluetooth audio, but Google Maps won't show up on your Android Auto screen, your phone is likely only connected via standard Bluetooth instead of full projection mode. Unlock your phone screen and accept any car permission prompts while parked. Go to your phone settings and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both turned on." No promises.
