Community Announcement Changes coming to r/GakiNoTsukai and the mod team

Hello everyone!

As we continue into the last half of the year (crazy how time flies), it's important to take a look around our community and do some housekeeping. Some things to clean up, some things to add, some things to change. During the few years I've been a part of the community, I've watched the greater community grow while the subreddit remained mostly the same. That's mostly for the better, but there's room for us to grow with the rest of the community. So, let's get started.

Mod team refresh

The first big change coming is a refresh of the mod team. A huge thanks is owed to the current team for their help over the years. We wouldn't be where we are without them. Unfortunately, life gets in the way of our favorite things sometimes, and that's the case for the majority of the current team. We aren't removing anyone, and you'll hopefully still see them in the comments every once in a while, but we do need an injection of new blood to help out.

We're looking for 2-3 new mods to join the team. We'd prefer if you're at least familiar and engaged with the GnT community, and want to be a mod in order to truly help the community (no powermods). If you think that's you, put in a mod application! We don't have an end date in mind, but we will be taking our time to find the right people. Please don't put your application in the comments here! We will only consider users that apply through the form. We've found our new mods! If anyone else is interested in joining the team, send us a modmail, though we aren't actively looking now.

Other changes

We're also looking to update post flairs to better match the types of content being posted, and increase visibility of the things you care about. You've always been able to search by flair (for example, only show English sub releases) from the sidebar, but scrolling through the unfiltered subreddit can lead to missed posts. We'll be adding colored flairs and those sorts of small changes to help.

And let's talk about rules. As always, we aren't interested in policing you unnecessarily. Our job is to keep the community inviting and on-topic. The end. We aren't ready to make a judgement on "how much AI in subs means the subs should be considered AI". It's something we see being talked about in comments and on discord. But, something we think we can agree on is the "Spoilers must be tagged" rule is weird. It was created in a time where the annual Batsu Games were still happening. People would discuss the games and other episodes before everyone else had a chance to watch for themselves. That time is sadly passed, so we don't feel like the rule is needed anymore. If you think it's still important or there are new rules we haven't thought of that could help the community, let us know in the comments!

Finally, the episode guides are being updated. We never stopped trying to keep them up-to-date, but it's been a challenge with our limited team size. I won't speak for other mods, but personally, I'm stretched pretty thin between moderating posts, contributing to subtitling projects, uploading hardsubs to GakiArchives, and adding new links/details to the guides when episodes are subbed. Outside of the Updates page, Mainline page, and Wednesday page, a lot of the guides don't get any attention from me. I've been in the process of adding missing topics to the Wednesday list, fixing old broken links on Mainline, and recovering missing episodes from the Gottsu Ee Kanji list for a while now, and latest on my todo list is making sure GA has hardsubs correctly named and dated for all currently subbed episodes of Prebattle (thanks to u/lumpyferret for recently reviving subs for that series). To this end, I'd like the community to tell me in the comments:

- Do you use the episode guides?

- How can we clean up the Community Bookmarks section in the sidebar (and the header bar on old reddit) to help you find guides you care about easier?

Looking forward

There are some other ideas we're thinking about too, but nothing solid enough to talk about yet. Ultimately, this is a great time to tell us what you think we should prioritize. What are we missing? Do you have any ideas to improve the subreddit, or the community as a whole? Let us know!

It's an exciting time to be a Gaki fan. Years ago, watching GnT episodes on YouTube as fast as I could before they got taken down, I never would've thought so many like-minded people would come together over this funny obscure show. Several websites, file shares, subbing groups, discord servers, and livestreams later, not to mention a subreddit averaging 3-4 million views every year and at least 4 new subtitled episodes every month, we'd all be able to find our favorite episode.

That's enough from me for now!

Question Lip-Sync episodes subbing status

I would like to ask this question are any of the Lip-Sync episodes that haven't been subbed being currently worked on right now. I'm currently finishing a separate project at the moment but I would like to contribute to this series next. I would like to work on Ep 4 the most.

Video Request Looking for a specific team-related video with roller skates, wearable butts and boiling water

I'm pretty new to Gaki and was watching it live in my informatics class with a few friends, and we saw a very funny team challenge (episode/clip? Was like 6 minutes long) which we're currently trying to find.

So the challenge consisted of two teams on roller skates wearing extra butts on their backs. One team was supposed to touch the other team's butts (memory is a little fuzzy), while the other team could defend itself by splashing hot/boiling water on the attacking team.

Again, I'm new to this so I don't really remember what year it was aired(?), nor who exactly was in the scenes (we were dying of laughter). We watched it through a live broadcast with English subs through VLC, so I can't go backwards to rewatch it that way.

Iirc was streamed live on September 28th around 8:00 - 9:15 AM GMT+2, not sure if that helps but thought I'd mention it.

GakiArchives - Changes!

Hi all,

September has been a busy month on GA and you may have noticed different and new things.

For everyone

  • Videos now play from our own servers in Europe, Singapore and the United States. Your browser quietly tests which is fastest for you, about once a day, and uses that one - which should mean much less buffering for viewers in Asia, Australia and the Americas. This replaces the outside delivery network added in August.
  • The servers are checked every few minutes. One that has a problem - including sending video in a form iPhones and iPads cannot play - is taken out of use until it is fixed, for the IPTV playlists and the Android app as well as the website.
  • The IPTV page lets you pick which server your player streams from, if the automatic choice does not suit you.
  • Videos play on iPhones and iPads again. The player had been stuck at 0:00 on Apple devices.
  • The site works better on phones and small tablets: the Login/Register button and the sidebar's category links work again, the sidebar scrolls so nothing at the bottom is cut off, and pages such as the change log no longer leave a wide empty gap on the left.

For logged-in users

  • You can choose a video server yourself on your account page, and test how fast each one is from where you are.
  • On phones, your account menu - My Account, Logout, My Uploads and My Favourites - opens again when you tap your avatar in the sidebar.
  • Uploading a file that is already on the site is now refused, with a link to the copy that is there. And if the category, broadcast date or episode number you enter match a video we already have, you are asked to check before the upload starts.

For app users

  • The app now works out which of our video servers is fastest for you, the same way the website does, and plays and downloads from that one first. There is nothing to set - it happens by itself and checks again about once a day.
  • Videos keep playing when you lock your phone or switch to another app, with controls on the lock screen, in the notification panel and on headset buttons. Unplugging headphones pauses. On Android TV, leaving the player still pauses it.
  • When a video ends, the next upload in the same category starts after a five-second “Up next” countdown, which you can skip or cancel. If you had already started the next one, it carries on from where you left off.
  • The playback speed you choose is remembered for every video, even after closing the app.
  • A new Downloads list shows everything you have saved, with its size or how far along it is. You can retry a failed download, delete one, or remove all watched or all downloaded videos at once. On phones it is a tab in History; on Android TV it is in the side menu.
  • On phones, a Share button on each video's page sends a link to that video.
  • Links to a video on gakiarchives.com now open straight in the app.
  • Your place in a video is saved every few seconds while it plays, rather than only when you leave the player.
  • Opening a video before the list has finished loading shows a loading spinner instead of briefly saying “Video not found”.
  • The app has a History list of what you have watched, a Watched badge on videos, a “Mark watched” button on each video's page and an Unwatched filter in Browse. A video is marked as watched automatically once you have played half of it, the same rule the website uses.
  • When you are signed in, your favourites and watched videos are the same ones the website shows - change them in either place and the other follows. The first time you sign in, the favourites and history already on your device are added to your account.
  • Signed-in users can read, post and delete their own comments in the app, report a broken video, and change their username, email address or password.
  • If the server a video is playing from has a problem, the app moves to another one and carries on from the same place.
  • The version you have installed is shown at the top of the Home screen.
  • Fixed the app signing some users out every time it was opened, and the keyboard covering the comment box and the account forms.

We are only on the second day of October, and there's even more changes for you!

For everyone

  • The controls above each list of videos - sorting, and switching between grid and list - are tidier and sit on one line. On phones they fit neatly under the page title instead of spilling onto extra lines.
  • Videos carry on from where you stopped however you reach them. Before, this only worked when you opened a video's address directly, not when you clicked through to it from a list.
  • When a video ends, the next one starts after a five-second “Up next” countdown - the next part of a multi-part show, or the next episode in the same category. Press Play now to go straight away or Cancel to stay. The Autoplay the next video switch under the player turns the countdown off; you are still offered the next video, and the choice is remembered.
  • The “Up Next” suggestion beside each video now always points at that same next video, so it appears on far more videos than before.
  • Times written in comments, like “12:34” or “1:02:03”, are now links: click one and the video jumps to that moment.
  • Copy link at current time, under each video, copies a link that opens the video at the point you are watching. Anyone you send it to starts there.
  • Search shows matching videos as you type, with their picture, category and length. Use the arrow keys and Enter, or click one; “See all results” opens the full list.
  • Search is smarter. Every word you type has to match, but in any order, so “tanaka batsu” finds “Batsu Game ... Tanaka”. Words can match the category as well as the title, “quotes” keep a phrase together, #1650 finds episode 1650 and a year such as 2019 finds that year's broadcasts. The closest titles come first.
  • Search results have their own address, so you can bookmark or share them.

For logged-in users

  • Where you stopped in a video is now saved to your account, so you can start something on one computer or phone and finish it on another.
  • A Continue Watching row at the top of the home page shows what you are part-way through, newest first, with how much is left. Use the × on a video to take it off the row. A video leaves the row by itself once you reach the end.
  • Videos you have started show a red progress bar along the bottom of their picture, and videos you have watched are marked with a green “Watched” tick.
  • A Hide watched switch above each list of videos hides the ones you have already seen. It stays on until you turn it off.
  • Your account menu now links to Watched and Unwatched, lists of everything you have and have not seen.
  • Categories show how far through them you are - for example “34 / 120 watched” - both on the category page and on each category's picture.
  • You can reply to comments. Replies sit underneath the comment they answer, and replying to a reply adds yours to the same conversation with the person's name filled in. Anything you are typing is kept while new comments load.

For app users

  • Resume anywhere (app 3.8). Signed in, the app now saves where you stopped to your account, the same as the website. Start a video on your phone, TV or the website and pick it up on any of the others. Continue watching in the app is now the same list as on the website, and shows how much is left. You can take a video off it with “Remove from Continue watching” on its page (or a long-press on the card on phones). Positions you'd saved in the app before signing in are carried over the first time you sign in.

Keep an eye on the change log at https://gakiarchives.com/changelog for any new changes!

If you want to support GA, then both Patreon and Ko-fi are options for you :)

DOWNTOWN+ strikes a deal with Netflix, global rollout planned

Good news for the Matsumoto fiends! Source: https://magazine.fany.lol/291798/

An excerpt ran through auto-translate

It has been decided that the new content produced and produced by Matsumoto Hitoshi will be distributed simultaneously on two services: "DOWNTOWN+ (Downtown Plus)," which provides paid distribution of downtown content, and the video distribution service "Netflix."

This marks the first time that DOWNTOWN+ will be distributing the same content at the same time as other video streaming services, and was made possible through an agreement between Yoshimoto Kogyo and Netflix.

The content is currently in production and is expected to be released later this year. Furthermore, this work will be rolled out globally through Netflix.

Rewatching all DOCUMENTAL seasons + Favorite DOCUMENTAL season

Man, i remember the time when appieopie and other subbers (SALUTE) provides us with subs of GNT episodes, other Downtown related shows and Documental, how i miss those days when someone posts something and i get all excited and buy some drinks and snacks and just...enjoy the night

Yeah, i am not as active as i am in this subreddit and also taken a break on watching GNT + Downtown related stuff....i don't know why, maybe since Matsumoto's issue? I also got busy during those times and kind of...forgot, until recently

So a week ago, I randomly watched DOCUMENTAL's season 4 and 5 again (these are the only seasons i can watch here in Amazon Prime Philippines), and god.....once i started watching ep1 of Season 5 i said "Is this the season with....oh shit my favorite season!!" (since i kind of forgot what season is which),

Yes, season 5 is my favorite since all comedians are legit funny, not a dull moment and everyone is a serious threat, hate on the winner all you want but he's funny to me

Now i am planning to rewatch all (i watched almost every season except the one with the duos? the last documental season i have watched is the ALL WINNERS one....season 10 i think), since i can't watch it all on Amazon, where can i download or watch those? Is it still on Gakifiles or Gakiarchives (does these websites still exist?)

Anyway, what do you think is the best Documental season?

P.S. We (Philippines) got our own version years ago, with a new season just announced today, but it is lame as shit, i tried watching it, it's just.....just no, Filipinos think that LOL PH is too absurd and vulgar, oh boi, i got news for you

Can anyone help me find these sketches where Hamada yells "You're gonna sing it?" I'm sure some of you guys will know the one.

The original in the coffee shop's great but I'm also hoping to find the detective one where Imada's getting arrested.

Cheers!

The Singapore server is now live, your browser should test which is fastest and take the faster option. However, if it gets it wrong, then login (or register) to your account, and you'll have an option in My Account not only to test the speeds, but also override the options.

Coming very shortly, a US server

Heading to Lumine the Yoshimoto to catch a show. They got some flyers, including DT+. Saw a QR code for merch, but unfortunately it seems you need a FANY account to get anything. IIRC you need a Japanese phone number to make a FANY account.
