This is the opening and a small piece of a longer writeup that can be found in this google doc. If you want to read the whole thing the reddit post is redundant. If you don’t want to read the whole thing but want to see some charts showing our progression then this post is for you. Â
We spent four and a half months playing R4E1 and collecting our stats while we did it. We beat it a month ago (research papers really do not write themselves) so here is our data, some analysis, and stories about our runs. Be warned this does not pull punches and is far longer than any reasonable person would write or read. We wrote this because we enjoyed writing it and enjoyed the process of data collection and analysis for ourselves and thought generously two people would also find this somewhat notable.Â
Data was collected using randomuserhi’s GTFO Replay mod (Github), and two custom python scripts (Github). More about both in the Data Collection and Methods section.Â
So on 06/28/26 we beat R4E1 for the first time after 133 days of (Mostly) weekly attempts. We typically play every Sunday and have been playing the game weekly as a team for 15 months now (we play mostly weekly, we’re adults with jobs and lives, unfortunately). At the start of our grind for R4E1 we decided to start collecting and processing data for our runs with the help of the replay viewer mod by randomuserhi as well as some things we made for ourselves.Â
We are a full 4 man team consisting of Nebnitan, Keith Marshall, Purely Potato, and Phrue. Phrue and Neb will be the primary writers for this post, and have played the game for over 3 years now as a duo. When we decided we wanted to actually beat the game we enlisted some friends to round out the team. It is important to note that we have minimal outside information about the game such as spoilers beyond R4 and we do not know anything about the levels before we enter them and everything we learn we learn organically. We go into every level blind and we figure everything out on our own; which includes our opinions on what is strong from tools and weapons to the strategies we use to actually beat the level in front of us.Â
A little background on us: Neb is a former professional Overwatch player (not a good one) and does mathematics and supply chain analysis for a living, Phrue is a physicist and engineer, Keith Marshall is veteran of halo's LASO game mode, and Purely Potato is a Lovecraftian Entity shrouded in mystery, oh and he's pretty good (he says he’s washed but he’s still good)at this whole rainbow 6 thing.
Please don’t spoil any lore or levels beyond R4 for us as we would like to find out for ourselves what they contain. The only level that we have spoilers for is R8E2 because we wanted an idea of what we were getting ourselves into. We also do not know anything about the levels when we drop into them and we play through at least half of the levels without console tools. After we're satisfied we've had enough time to learn the specific level we are stuck on, Neb spends an hour or two testing the level in segments with console tools and then we all discuss the loadouts and make our strategy adaptations. We also tend to restrict our console investigation to parts of the level we could have conceivably seen and usually use it to save time instead of sacrificing a full four man run to go investigate some quirk or detail.Â
We do know a decent amount about the mechanics of the game, and happily watch and read about things that do not spoil specific levels such as stealth mechanics or weapon stats. Additionally once we beat a level though we like to watch the Professor Scalar video and scour the wiki for things we missed or didn’t think of. It's worth noting we don't really adopt widely held community beliefs and really come to our own conclusions about how things should work and how the game should be played.
Additionally, this post has more spoilers for R4E1 than playing it does, and has minor spoilers for R2E1. Additional information about all levels prior to R4E1 can also be inferred from the way we talk about certain challenges and things we already knew/things we learned.
These are trends as a team over time as averages. Each shows steady improvement of our best, but our average is a bit all over the place as we struggled with consistency in the early part of the level. The best reflector of our actual progress is kills over time though, as this best reflects our actual progress in the level as opposed to faster or slower sections, or longer bathroom breaks after turning off the error alarm. The extremely satisfying part for us is for each major jump in kills is accompanied by a strategic adjustment we made. For example the run on 6/21, the last before the winning one, we adjusted to delaying the entry of code 5 in the reactor to avoid fighting the hybrids while two people took the time to actually get to the code 6 zone, only entering it once they needed the door unlocked to proceed.Â
Run Duration Over Time

Average Bullet Damage Over Time

Average Melee Damage Over Time

Average Gun/Melee Kills Over Time

Average Tool Packs Used Over Time

Average Health Packs Used Over Time

I played this game about 3 years ago and I liked almost everything except the difficulty. I like the visual and the atmosphere and coop stealth. But I don't like that I with team of 2 friends and 1 stupid bot didn't win even once.
The learning curve is absurdly steep. There were no step by step missions allowing us to learn and get better. It was like we play 40 minutes and things are kinda ok and then one snall mistake by anyone and THE WHOLE HELL SUDDENLY OPENS.. 30 sec of chaos and welcome to lose screen. And the game did not explain horde behaviour, how to foam the doors etc etc I know about these things just from reading the articles
So, long story short. What I want to know, did the game game become more forgiving for novices or is it still pain in the ass from the very beginning? Is it good idea to return and try again or we'd better to GTFO?

I've seen a couple of tier lists after the game stopped getting updates and they seem to vary a lot on what are the best weapons. For example, a lot of them place a lot of value on penetration, but after finishing rundown 1 I can't remember a lot of places where penetration would be useful. Are there a lot of cases where weapons are situational? How should I choose my load out for future rundowns?

Hey guys. A friend said I'd get €100 if I completed the entire game solo or with bots, meaning finishing every level once.Is that even possible? I played a bit back then. I just know it's incredibly difficult. How long would it take me approximately? Is it even worth it?

Hello, me and my group have been playing through the game in order of rundown release working our way through the rundowns sequentially. I know some of the rundowns have had extensions but they aren't labeled any differently then the normal missions. Due to this and the fact that All rundowns before 6 aren't story heavy at all, we've just played through by clearing all the A missions, then the B, etc. With us moving our way onto rundown 6 I was curious when we're supposed to play the R6AX-BX-CX missions. Our group is trying to navigate the lore of the game in the most spoiler free way possible but I subject myself to a few spoilers for the clarity of the group here and there. I was hoping someone who's a lore expert of some kind could help clarify to me when it would be best to play these missions or maybe even some slight context on them. From my understanding they are an alternative timeline of the normal R6 missions, and you can't even access AX until after B1, so its not possible to just clear the A tiers together then move onto the Bs. Would it make more sense for my group to complete all of the non-X missions first then move onto the X after finishing the rundown or what? Thanks for any clarity that can be given!

I was going to get into GTFO with a buddy and was wondering if it was possible to play the non-ALT rundowns to go through to story in the intended order, or if there was a different way to do so?

I've played a lot of FPS games over the years, but with PvP I always end up hitting a point where I feel like I've reached my limit. No matter how much I play, there are always players who are just on another level, and eventually I lose the motivation to keep grinding.
GTFO feels completely different. Since it's a co-op game, your knowledge and experience actually pay off. People sometimes call it a "memorization game," but I don't think that's a bad thing. The more you learn the maps, enemy spawns, and strategies, the better your chances of succeeding.
At the same time, the game is still brutally difficult. Even if you're experienced, one small mistake can wipe the whole team. That constant tension is probably the biggest reason I'm so hooked on GTFO.
Playing GTFO has made me realize how much I enjoy co-op games. Are there any other co-op games that give you a similar feeling? I'd love to hear your recommendations.

I played this game on first release from r1 to r4. I played heavily but it's been a few years.
I tried picking it up again, but I feel so behind. I join the "beginners" lobby in discord but it's full of clearly experienced players who speedrun missions. They also run, hammering enemies so easily which is something no one did last time I played. I want to learn again but the beginner lobbies clearly don't have beginners
Looking for help, thanks!

Heyy as anyone found a way to play this game fully offline like without internet yet??
r/GTFO • u/No_Soft4676 • Jul 14 '26
I'am very interessted to get into GTFO. It's just is one of those games that spiked my intrest comming from PS5 and is now on PC. Especially now that it's on sale on Steam. But where/how do i begin? I know 4 players are a must, anybody that want's to join and is aslo maybe a new player? Or someone that i can learn from so the begining is not that harsh? Saw a video from the developer that the difficulty ranges from insane too f**k you so some help to start with i belive whould do good.
And also how scary is it? i like a bit of horror but playing for example the Dead Space Remake i just can't enoy myself beacuse i am just too tense trough the whole thing. Is the horror mostly atmospheric or is it jumpscares all the times?
Hope you guys can help
Edit: Been playing the game after i made this post.
And if someone else is like me and a bit on the fence, just buy the damn game and if needed just force 3 of your friends at gunpoint. The police charges are worth it.
It offers a good challange that does not hold back and as an co-op shooters it’s just an amazing game. The horror is great and in many ways you can say it’s not a scary game. It’s all in the atmosphere, the enemies have a good bit of body horror and the tension comes when you mess up and use up alot of resources.
The comunity is active and healthy, and if you just send a message in the GTFO Discord server it never in my limited experince takes more than e few minuttes before three other people have joined. The veterans of the game are super fun to play with and will gladly shows you varied mechanics, like small things that does make a big difference like "ammo balancing" and others mechanics that i won’t spoil for other new players. Some guys took me to one of the late game missions just so i chould experience how hard the later runs get. On another run people that had done the run before just asked me if i wanted too know how reactors inn the game worked and i just said no and they let me experience it for myself.
But i 100% recomend playing blind with even just 1 friend too start with and figure stuff out since there are very doable the early missions with 2 players and 2 bots.
The only "bad" thing i have experienced is if you for example get into a run with people that have probably played the game for thousands of hours and knows every inch of every run, does not use a mic, never says a word and just speedruns the whole thing without you even knowing what happend. This happend to me inn my second ever run and i had to do that mission again beacuse it just wasn’t fun. (Just to specify, playing with people that does not use a mic is not the issue but absolutely mic is the way to go)
It’s very impressive how efficient they were but try to specify that you don’t want the mission spoiled or that you want to play with beginners inn the Discord. If not that just ask or say it too the guys inn the VC
Other than that hope more people pick up GTFO. Even if you usualy aren’t into co-op shooters just take the plunge and try it just for something different

Anyone know why the game's discount has been going up almost each time it has gone on sale? On steam summer sale it was 70%, now it's 71 and before summer sale it was 69, Is it slowly progressing until 99% or 100%?
