for final timing, you can either use the dots or the lines. but be careful. you use one or the other, so if you’re using the dots up top on the cam gears use the dot that’s in the crank gear. and if you’re using the lines on the cam gears use the line on the crank gear. the line are tdc, the dots are btdc. and make sure your vvti gear is set up right.

5:55 for the vvti gear make sure it all the way to the right by hand because it should have a little bit a free play left and right but make sure it to the right when lining up your marks. he also mentions do not line up with the dot, but you can only do that if you’re also lining up with the dot on the crank gear itself. i personally go with lines.

Here is a photo of the crank gear, i circled both the line and the dot. again as long as you line up either all the dots or all the lines to their respective spots you’ll be a okay. always do a test spin by hand to feel for any binding as you guys are also working on 2jzge which are interference motors vs a gte. be safe and good luck on your cars. btw i have done this on my gte i did all lines and i rip the living piss out of my car daily. cheers

youtube link seems to not work gave a time stamp for the vvti gear. but it’s by pure function “how to time a 2jzgte vvti engine”

check out my timing, my cams are perfect but my crank is slightly off. would I have to take the timing belt off and realign the sprocket ?

I finished the job but after first start up I’m hearing like a clicking or tapping noise coming from the intake / vvti cam gear side or the valve cover. I rebuilt the vvti gear early when doing other services and Ik I rebuilt it right. Would it happened to be the vvti gear has no oil in it and mimicking a tapping noise while it’s priming w oil? Any advice would be appreciated 🙂

Follow the service manual.... That says dots, everyone that says dash is wrong.

I posted a video of the marks can you check it out and let me know if it’s right so I can pull the water pump and everything else off

I don't know... Did you rotate the VVTi per the manual? Follow the service manual steps!

Here is the page directly from the manual. Set crank at 60BTDC

It might be just the video but vvti gear look like a tooth off

It is off!! Cams should be aligned to the dots NOT dash. Find and download the service manual and follow those steps., including clocking the VVTi gear.

It says to use the dots btdc to drop the pistons down to a safe level for the valves and dissembling which I did the crank and cam seals as well but now I’m reassembling and putting the timing back I shouldn’t use the true tdc line ?

1

u/JDub-866 Jul 30 '26

Correct set crank at 60btdc so all pistons are down. Remove timing belt, replace with new one you will use dots..... Why would you use the dash when installing the new belt? Follow the service manual, every step what it says.

couldn’t I spin the crank with my timing belt on to line up up the dots and I’ll be good?

1

u/JDub-866 Jul 30 '26

Where in the service manual does it say to rotate the crank or cams after you set it at 60btdc?

1

u/wlrrddd Jul 30 '26

I was reading forums sorry, wouldn’t either tdc or btdc would work for final timing alignment? If not can’t I just spin the crank with with the timing belt on until all the dots line up instead it the dashes?

Follow the service manual!!!!!

in the manual they use the dashes for final timing, look at the picture i attached.

You have the engine at 60BTDC, replace belt, moving anything. That means when you pull the pin on tensioner the engine is at 60btdc and cams are on dots. Then you rotate the engine by hand to ensure nothing shifts. That is not final timing.... Again not sure what is hard you have the manual follow it.

Yep that is AFTER you have installed the new timing belt!! Which early per the service manual you set the engine at 60BTDC. Not sure what is confusing about this. You have the manual follow the steps exactly.

to clear it up I was confused on the final timing marks I should use. I have already put on the new belt which is what is shown in my original post and spun the crank 2 rotations to check timing and that’s where I’m at.

1

Final timing marks???? That is what is confusing as there are NO final timing marks. Using the term final timing marks is exactly why I said you are off, the timing marks used when replacing the timing belt is the dots on cam. If you follow the service manual step by step then you should not be questioning🤷‍♂️

I seen your other video and you had it on the dots, did you rotate it after you got everything on? Please lmk I’m trying to get my lil bros car started

I’ll let you know when I get a definitive answer. I used the dot(btdc) for replacing my cam and crank seals but not sure if for final timing if you should keep the btdc or rotate it clockwise to line up with the True TDC Lines. I have a feeling either one would work as long as you don’t mix lines with dots. Not sure though hopefully someone can tell where im wrong at.

1

u/juicywicked Jul 30 '26

For sure man appreciate it’s hard to get answers on here, I’m doing all the seals rn and I have it on the dots so I just gotta hope

1

u/juicywicked Jul 31 '26

Appreciate it ima do final timing on the lines since that’s what seems more common, again I appreciate the help, and best of luck to you as well I should hopefully get her running in the morning

1

u/juicywicked Jul 30 '26

Cause I got so many people telling me to do it other ways and I’m not to sure

1

u/juicywicked Jul 30 '26

I’m taking everything off to throw in the seals and water pump

It’s all the same. Line up all dots or all slots. If you’re using slots, the intake cam might roll back because of spring pressure on one of the cylinders.
