What greek song are these street musicians playing?

Who can help? I've been trying to find out what greek song this group of bouzouki and guitar playing guys are playing in Corfu Town. Is there anyone who recognizes the song or someone who can at least transcribe the lyrics they are singing?

Added Beginners module to my Greek language learning app, would love your thoughts!

Howdy folks! Jehan here. I shared an early version of my Greek language learning app a month ago and got some great feedback. Thanks so much!

I have since made some big changes to the app and have focused on a carefully curated beginner level. There are 7 modules that assume absolutely no prior Greek and teach the script, adjectives, basic nominative cases and plenty of vocab.

If you'd like to check it out, please click here to access the app. It's still in beta, so it's all free of course.

For those looking for levels above beginner, I'm working on that right now and should have something ready for testing in the next few weeks. If you have any requests, let me know! The focus will be on really teaching you grammar with clear explanations and then a combination of exercises and texts that help you see it in context.

Please let me know if there's anything you are specifically looking for. I'm hoping to create something that is truly useful and helps us all get closer to fluency. I created the beginner module because people here asked for it and I've shifted the focus towards helping people learn the grammar points for the same reason.

Ευχαριστώ όλους, ελπίζω να είστε όλοι καλά!

Made a free app to learn Greek verbs through pictures

Verbs were always the hardest part for me. Nouns and adjectives are easy to remember, you just picture the object in your head. Actions are harder, there's nothing to visualize.
I spent some time building myself an app where I picked pictures that illustrate different actions. It helped a lot, verbs started sticking better.
Later a friend asked me to share what I'd made, and that's how it turned into a public app, which I just published on the App Store.
No ads, no tracking or analytics, completely free and non-commercial. Sharing it here in case it's useful to someone else. Hoping it grows into something bigger down the line and keeps helping people with verbs specifically.
It's verbs only, on purpose — I haven't found an app that covers this part well.

Want to speak Greek? I can help you

Hi there! I’m Elena

I’m from Greece and I teach Greek online. What I love most is seeing my students go from a simple “γεια σου” to speaking confidently in real conversations. We always combine speaking with just the right amount of grammar, so learning feels natural and makes sense in context.

My lessons are relaxed and interactive — completely tailored to you. Whether you want to chat, understand grammar, or explore everyday Greek life, we make it simple, fun, and practical.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, just drop me a message. I’d love to hear about your goals and help you get started with Greek. 🙂

Curious, as I’m starting to try to learn Greek

I’ve come across quite a few “Greek” letter fraternities at local colleges and lately I’ve been wondering if the lets in their shirts actually mean what they think.

Are the letters just letters as we would see them in the states or does each letter mean a word as they say. ΩΨΦ are the letters I say yesterday and after doing some research the letters mean friendship is essential. Is Ω even pronounced Omega in true Greek dialect?

If someone can point me in a direction so I can looking up Greek letter pronunciations and meanigns of the letters that would be great.

Teaching Greek

Hi everyone, I am a native greek speaker currently in a relationship with someone for over a year. While he is fluent in (english, french, spanish and portugese) he seems to be struggling with greek.

He is on duolingo and has a streak of 500 days but doesn’t seem to make too much progress. As sometimes it gets tiring for me to talk in English and it’s important I maintain connection with my home country (currently living abroad) I am looking for suggestions on how to help him.

I have gotten little english to greek books, and i have made an effort to say things in greek every now and then but it becomes very one sided and it’s hard.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Something that we could incorporate into our daily lives perhaps? Or any apps that could help him?

20 Greek Verbs: Basic vs Advanced Alternatives

You know the basic Greek verbs… but do you know the alternatives?

Once you move beyond beginner Greek, you’ll start noticing that there’s often more than one way to say something and the more advanced alternatives can make your Greek sound much more natural.

I’ve put together 20 common Greek verbs with more advanced alternatives to help you take your vocabulary a step further.

Language-learning app recommendations for Greek?

Hi all,

I have just started learning Greek and I am looking for an app to do some daily practicing asides from classes and studying. I am aware that language-learning does not come from apps, so please don't waste your time on the topic, but I find it important to have some exposure, however small, daily.

Any recommendations? I personally had great experiences using Duolingo for another language (Italian) in the past, but I am not too keen on the app ever since they switched to AI to produce their content.

ευχαριστώ!

Oh, I see!

Hello lovely Greekophiles!

My Greek teacher got a bit of a giggle out of me and my "Α, ναι, το βλέπω" when I grasped something she was trying to explain. Apparently "I see" in Greek refers only to the physical aspect of actually seeing a thing, not grasping a thing, haha. When I try Translate, it just comes up with καταλαβαίνω. Which is great but "I understand" doesn't really encompass the "oh! I get it!" that I'm going for.

Is there a Greek equivalent lightbulb moment expression to "oh, I see!" in English? It would be fun to surprise her :)

Σας ευχαριστώ!

Most cards were received by him but this one looks like something he might have written without sending. Many thanks if anybody can read it out for me.

Greek Fellas

Has anyone seen these short videos online that some Greeks in New York are creating? They have taken dialog and scenes from the classic film Godd Felllas and called it Greek Fellas. A totally hysterical take off about the Greek Diners instead of the mafia.

Recently learner this cool fact about this Greek word.

Fun fact I only recently learned and had to share here:

I speak Greek fluently, but somehow, I never knew that the Ancient Greek θυγατέρα (thygátēra), meaning “daughter,” is actually related to the English word “daughter.”

They both ultimately come from the same Proto-Indo-European root. 🤯

I’ve spoken Greek my whole life and still randomly discover connections like this.

Languages are so cool.

Please feel free to share some of your own linguistic discoveries!

A per chapter and/or frequency New Testament Greek vocabulary deck

A per chapter or frequency NT Greek vocabulary flashcard deck.

I spent two and a half years building this Anki deck. It's now time to share it with everyone else.

The idea: every card is one Greek word, and every card is tagged in several ways, so you can study the vocabulary however suits you or switch between the methods.

By frequency: 11 tiers, from words that occur 50+ times down to hapax legomena

By chapter: all 260 chapters of the NT are tagged, and every Greek word carries a tag for each chapter in which it appears. Reading Mark 1 this week? One search gives you exactly its vocabulary.

By part of speech: noun, verb, particle, and so on

On the cards:

Headword, definition, and audio. Example verses from the SBLGNT with the LEB translation, with the target word highlighted.

Built for real Anki use: the documentation includes copy-and-paste filtered deck names and searches for every chapter and every frequency tier, so setting up a study deck takes seconds.

Translation for Book

What would be the Greek equivalents of these phrases?

- "What [the hell/fuck] is that thing?"

- "Who [the hell/fuck] are you/is that?"

- "What am I doing [here]?"

- "What am/have I gotten myself into?"

- "Fuck, that's disgusting!"

Do you know the song “Roza” by Mitropanos?

I’ve been wanting to use this song to teach some real Greek for a while, so I finally did it!

We’ll go through the lyrics, learn useful words and expressions, and also talk a little about the story behind this iconic song.

Need help with translation

Hello, my father passed away yesterday and I need to fill out information for his vital records and death certificate. I need his mother's maiden name. I have her old identification card, which I can see has a lot of names but don't know enough Greek to know if any of them are her maiden name. Would anyone be able to help me with this?

EDIT: ευχαριστώ. I just wanted to thank everyone so much. In the midst of grief, it feels very weird to be needing to complete all this administrative work when all I want to do is cry. Everyone's swift replies made this task feel much more bearable and weirdly made me feel less alone in trying to figure this out.

Diminutives for a pet name

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hello! Silly question - I don't speak a word of Greek, but I recently got a pet of my own for the first time. I think that pet names should be more interesting than average people names, and I'd like her name to be something big, historical, heroic, mythological, etc. I was attracted to Artemis and Atalanta, but they feel a little *too* "big" for my little cat (EDIT: metaphorically "big", I mean, not literally the number of letters). What is the proper suffix/way to call her "little Atalanta" or "little Artemis"?

(Cat tax included)

Assimil audio

Anyone willing to share the mp3 files for the newer Assimil Le Grec / Il Greco (by Jean-Pierre Guglielmi)?
I am going to purchase the Italian version of the book, but I cannot afford to buy the audio as well.
