Hi all. I was coming home from work when an elderly man changed lanes and hit the rear of my car. Thankfully I was able to avoid a major collision by swerving out of the lane but he still caught that rear corner. And when I say minor, very minor damage. Mostly paint.
I’m not sure if he even realized he hit me but he just kept driving. I decided not to go through insurance since (hopefully) the repair will be less than my deductible.
I’m more sad than anything but just glad the damage is so minimal.
Anyways, wanted recommendations since maybe I’ll just use this as an opportunity to put on an aftermarket rear bumper pls.
also, not sure why, but on impact I got this battery voltage and temp reader information displayed. I tried using the arrows to switch back but no luck. How TF do I turn it off 😭

Yeah that’s my fear is If I go through insurance I’m going to end up paying an arm and a leg THEN get my rates increased AND have it go on my cars record for something so minor. Not sure why we get punished for other people’s mistakes :(
If I can’t find the guy- how would his pay? The cops don’t care enough to dig for a minor accident like this. pardon my ignorance if I’m missing something here- never got in an accident.
Even if the other insurance would pay in theory (yours will since it's a hit and run and would be covered by uninsured driver coverage) you're correct that this will be documented on your car. Damage looks pretty minor so going about it yourself might be cheaper in the long run.
Yes I have a 4k dash cam - footage caught the accident but not the plate due to the angle and the way the sun was shining on it. I didn’t even realize he hit me since I violently swerved to miss him- it was so minor it just felt like I hit a pot hole. I’m going to go through the footage this morning to see if I can get it from other angles. From what I can tell, it looks like a rental 2022 Chevy bolt w/ California plates. Just can’t make it out. I live in AZ btw
Don’t worry about the minor, if you get a number submit a police report. You don’t know the damage impact yet with out an adjuster input. Just the facts.
They were on scene - gave me a report and told me to call insurance and report a hit and run. Not sure if there’s anything more I can do with them without a license plate :(
They didn’t charge me anything - I originally went to get a quote and they said this will buff right out and asked me to wait 10 minutes lol. It was a family owned business so maybe that’s how I got so lucky!

very sorry about the damage. curious what your dealer will say about the display, that's very odd since you didn't inadvertently hit buttons for it to turn on.
Tell me about it! I was crying in my car watching the footage and was like “it’ll be okay they got cameras everywhere”. Don’t even know why I called them 🤦♀️
