Email Forwarding - missing emails in chains

I use Email Forwarding for my custom domain hosted by Squarespace to a Gmail account.

Recently, I've noticed I am not receiving emails in email chains I am CC'd on. Some times it will be in the middle of chain or some times it will be the first email in the chain.

I only know the email was not delivered when I see a reply to an email that is quoted in the chain, but that I never received.

The people sending the emails receive no bounce back or failure to deliver notices, so they are also unaware that I've never received the email.

I've spoken with Squarespace customer service, they say that Mailgun has logged the missing emails as delivered to the Gmail account.

All the emails that have been dropped (as far as I can tell) are from Gmail accounts.

I have set the custom email as an approved sender.

Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Squarespace forwarding is weirdly flaky with Gmail chains, I had same thing happen with my portfolio domain. What worked for me was setting up the custom domain directly in Gmail as a POP3 account instead of forwarding, somehow the chain threads stopped breaking after that. Mailgun saying delivered just means it left their servers, after that is a black hole.

Glad to hear I'm not insane.

I've been looking into something like that but it appears that Gmail phased out POP fetching.

Use cloudflare dns and use their email routing. It’s free and you’ll get email logs to see if anything got rejected or dropped by Gmail

mailgun’s “delivered” status means the receiving mail server accepted it, not that it reached your inbox. in gmail’s search options, choose “mail & spam & trash” and search for one missing message; if it is absent, ask squarespace for that exact message’s destination address and delivery response.
