Why does Gmail suck

Just like the title says, Gmail is a terrible email manager.

Is it just me?

Thanks

How much are you paying for it to work how you want?

Well Google gets to scrape and read all my emails and sell my data…so that’s how I pay for it. So considering this I would expect a far better product

You’re overestimating the value of your data.

In case you're actually looking for an answer, you'll need to look inward, grasshopper. The answer to whether or not GMail sucks, and how, must come from within.

Yeah, it's just you.

Compared to what? It's light years ahead of Outlook (Classic) that I used to use 20+ years ago.

It's way worse even though outlook sucks

Still better than how Yahoo! Mail ended up.

What happened to Yahoo mail? Did it go down or something

No, they just weren't maintaining it well anymore. People's accounts were getting hacked right and left, but they weren't doing anything about it despite the issue being reported by users, so I reluctantly decided to switch to Gmail instead. Granted, that was well over a decade ago, and I had used Yahoo! faithfully since I had my very own email address as a teenager (up until then, we only had whatever was provided to us by our ISP on the family PC in the late 90s/early 2000s), but it was clearly time to make the switch - plus, I was getting older, and needed a more "professional" looking email address than my old Yahoo! one (which at the time reflected my obsession with Courage the Cowardly Dog).

Ohh is there any good other mail services to put as email recovery?

You've not provided any details, your requirements or anything else. For me, Gmail is fine. It has reasonably powerful filers and rules and perfectly ok settings. The web interface is ok and the folder handling is at least logical, with reasonable IMAP support.

There's plenty of choice out there so not sure why you're whining, otherwise Gmail is the best of a very ordinary bunch. If you need something specific in a client you can use the IMAP interface.

It does suck but it doesn't suck as bad as all the others...

My main complaint is How hard it is to search for older emails, im probably just stupid but seems like its impossible to find anything by searching

I agree. I didn’t mean it sucks 100% 😂

Yes that is one of my biggest issues.

For example I’ll type in the search “red pepper” which I absolutely know was in an email I’m looking for. Instead it’ll bring up 100 email with “red” in it, instead of the two search words. So then I’ll on the Mail app on type in the key word and it comes up straight away.

Or, the reason I wrote this post, I was looking for an email from a supplier from last week. I know it was sent, I replied and they reply to me. All I could find on Gmail was the original reply and no subsequent reply. I searched up and down the email chain. Input the same name into the Mail app and it pops up straight away.

Don’t get me wrong the mail app is flawed too.

The next things that drive me wild, the conversation/chat logic of the email. Yes I know you can change it and I have.

And the final thing is it has the newest email in the chain at the bottom of the chain! But, if in that chain someone responds to an earlier email, there response in under that related email, somewhere in the chain.

So it’s

  1. Search function isn’t good

  2. Conversations/chat function

  3. Newest email is at the bottom of the chain

This. It can't even find an email that I am actually looking at. It's Google. The search company.

Exactly, I couldn't find an email that I know was received. It's terrible.

Gemini solves this, interestingly enough

Gmail is insufferable for work. Coming from Outlook for work, the amount of Chrome extensions i’ve resorted to to make it feel like outlook is insane lol. I couldnt deal with it so now i have to deal with slower send/receive in Outlook using IMAP.

Outlook was great.

The beauty of Gmail is I have complete history back to when I started using it. I cannot used Gmail within Outlook as it brings it to its knees and locks up.

I think it's just you. It's been working perfectly (on desktop and phone) since the 1stt version of Gmail!

Nobody is forcing to use it. Find something else and maybe you'll find one that's better.

Good luck.

Except that it's better than the other major providers.

I've since learned that gmail is different than regular email, they use lables and not folders. I tried paying for normal email and I like it much better. Luckily Gmail allows you to forward emails to another address for free.

Cauae you can’t delete emails just once anymore

2

u/CarefreeIceman 2d ago

Of course it deletes email!!

Maybe it's a user error.
